Book My Father Braddock

Download or read book My Father Braddock written by John Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Father Braddock: Being the History of the Trials, Sufferings, Sacrifices, and Wrongs, of This Good Old Man and His Family in the Methodist Itinerancy Reader - I take pleasure in recommending to your attention the accompanying book, written by the Rev. J. Smith, A. M., M. D., a gentleman of titles and great celebrity, whose reputation, in fact, belongs to two hemipheres. The book purports to contain a history of "The Labors, Sufferings, Sacrifices, and Wrongs of my good Father Braddock and his family." The hero of this book - if such he may be called - does not represent any particular individual, but a large class of men who are engaged in the active work of the ministry in the M. E. Church, who may read in the lines that trace the fortunes of "My Father Braddock," what, in all human probability, will be their own ultimate destiny. The design of the author is to exhibit a life-like picture of the practical workings of that vast machinery called the Itinerancy. That much good has been accomplished through the instrumentality of Methodism, the most prejudiced mind must be compelled to admit; that we have now reached a crisis, when altered circumstances imperiously demand some modifications of the system, is apparent to every intelligent observer. "A froward retention of custom is as turbulent as an innovation; and they that reverence old times too much, are but a scorn to the new." Book excerpt: Parkinson's Disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world. Most people with the disease are diagnosed in their fifties or later, however, it is not just a disease of the elderly. Up to 10% of those with the condition develop the disease in their forties or younger at which point, it is termed "Young Onset Parkinson's Disease" or YOPD. When I was diagnosed with YOPD at the age of 43, I didn't know where to turn for information. I listened to podcasts from specialists, read books, attended support groups, joined Facebook pages, talked with my physician, but what I really wanted was to hear from people my age that were contending with the disease. So I determined that that the best way to learn was to talk to people and understand what its like to live with YOPD.This book is a collection of 10 interviews with individuals that have been living with the disease for as little as 1 to 23 years. Some are negotiating powerful careers, taking leadership roles in their professional organizations, competing in endurance events, starting foundations, volunteering in their communities, playing team sports, writing books, raising money for research and raising kids. However what characterizes them most is what they are not doing, which is sitting around waiting for the disease to consume them. Written primarily for the newly diagnosed, this book is also for the care givers, family members, friends and associates who, like me, are approaching this disease for the first time or have questions about what to expect. As you read this book my hope is that you'll develop a better understanding of what disease progression looks like and how you can support the person with Parkinson's in your life. Welcome to the YOPD Club!

Book The Life of the World to Come

Download or read book The Life of the World to Come written by Joseph Bathanti and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a weaving together of contradictory realms—past and present, rustbelt city and rural/urban South, old-world Catholicism and backwoods Protestantism—Joseph Bathanti draws readers into the 1970s as protagonist George Dolce faces major upheaval in The Life of the World to Come. George aspires to leave his blue collar, Catholic neighborhood of East Liberty in Pittsburgh. He is on the cusp of graduation from college and headed for law school when he becomes entangled in a local gambling ring. After his father gets laid off at the steel mill, George dramatically increases his wagering to help his parents with finances. What's more, he allows his boss at his real job and love interest's father, a pharmacist named Phil Rosechild, to place bets through him with the gambling ring's volatile kingpin. As his parents' financial situation deteriorates, George delves deeper into gambling, and he even goes so far as to set up Phil by using the pharmacist's unschooled and ever-growing betting practices to his own end—cheating the father of the woman he loves. When Phil welches on a large bet that George has placed for him, George finds himself in life-threatening trouble and must abandon his law school dreams. He robs the pharmacy, steals the delivery car, and flees south. After his stolen car breaks down in Queen, North Carolina, he meets a young, mysterious woman known as Crow. The two form a bond and eventually take to the road in an attempt to reconcile their harrowing, often surreal destiny and to escape George's inevitable punishment.
