During the decade that followed, the Founding Fathers—re-examined here as Founding Brothers—combined the ideals of the Declaration of Independence with the content of the Constitution to create the practical workings of our government. Through an analysis of six fascinating episodes—Hamilton and Burr’s deadly duel, Washington’s precedent-setting Farewell Address, Adams’ administration and political partnership with his wife, the debate about where to place the capital, Franklin’s attempt to force Congress to confront the issue of slavery and Madison’s attempts to block him, and Jefferson and Adams’ famous correspondence—Founding Brothers brings to life the vital issues and personalities from the most important decade in our nation’s history.

Book Otherwise

Download or read book Otherwise written by Farley Mowat and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Canadian icon gives us his final book, a memoir of the events that shaped this beloved writer and activist. Farley Mowat has been beguiling readers for fifty years now, creating a body of writing that has thrilled two generations, selling literally millions of copies in the process. In looking back over his accomplishments, we are reminded of his groundbreaking work: He single-handedly began the rehabilitation of the wolf with Never Cry Wolf. He was the first to bring advocacy activism on behalf of the Inuit and their northern lands with People of the Deer and The Desperate People. And his was the first populist voice raised in defense of the environment and of the creatures with whom we share our world, the ones he has always called The Others. Otherwise is a memoir of the years between 1937 and the autumn of 1948 that tells the story of the events that forged the writer and activist. His was an innocent childhood, spent free of normal strictures, and largely in the company of an assortment of dogs, owls, squirrels, snakes, rabbits, and other wildlife. From this, he was catapulted into wartime service, as anxious as any other young man of his generation to get to Europe and the fighting. The carnage of the Italian campaign shattered his faith in humanity forever, and he returned home unable and unwilling to fit into post-war Canadian life. Desperate, he accepted a stint on a scientific collecting expedition to the Barrengrounds. There in the bleak but beautiful landscape he finds his purpose – first with the wolves and then with the indomitable but desperately starving Ihalmiut. Out of these experiences come his first pitched battles with an ignorant and uncaring federal bureaucracy as he tries to get aid for the famine-stricken Inuit. And out of these experiences, too, come his first books. Otherwise goes to the heart of who and what Farley Mowat is, a wondrous final achievement from a true titan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the last of the famed Bengal Lancers, Brigadier Ingall has spent most of his life in India and Pakistan. When he first went to India in 1929, all the officers were English and all the enlisted men were Indian (Hindu, Sikh and Moslem). India was part of theBritish Empire and the Army was basically involved with hunting down outlaw bands of horsemen and keeping them in order. One of his first experiences there was leading a charge on horseback (swords in hand) of the 5th D.C.O. Lancers in the battle of karawal near the Khyber Pass. Later, in the Second World War, he commanded the 6th Lancers in a drive through northern Italy. By this time he had traded their horses for light armour (manufactured by General Motors), but the hazards were no less great. In one 2-hour punch, Ingall's forces cut a swathe through the remnants of the three German Divisions and penetrated 50 miles into enemy territory. For this he won the DSO. He was also awarded an OBE by King George VI for his service as founder and head of the Pakistan Military Academy which he was invited to found by no less person then Mohammad Ali Jinnah himself. Ingall serves as the academy's Commandment until 1951. Since then he has revisited the area several times as an honoured guest of the state, In 1982 he was appointed Honorary Council General of Pakistan , in California, where he now lives, by it's president General Zia-ul-Haq , who described Ingall as 'one of the founding fathers or our army.' During his many years in India and Pakistan he knew and worked with with the areas most important dignitaries such as Lord Mountbatten and Lord Ismay, Gandhi and Nehru. This is an autobiography full of incident and humour which will delight not only the old and bold but but all those who enjoy reading about the last days of the Raj.

Book excerpt: In a commercial for the news I was told I'd see a father's rage as he confronted in the court room the murderer of his daughter. What I saw was a man standing in the back of the court room scream maybe three or four incomprehensible words. It was really pathetic. We live in a society where people are expected to suppress anger. You are expected to keep it to yourself, obtain counseling, to undergo therapy, to learn to accept and move on. This is fine but before you do you need to experience your rage, to explore and embrace it in all its emotional richness, to revel in its liberating poignancy and to gather from it, strength and understanding of your own making. What can be seen with my father is a journey from murderous anger, torture slaying hatred to benevolent creativity.Hopefully my father's own rage will inspire and help with your own journey.
