Book excerpt: From the host of the YouTube channel that went viral—Dad, How Do I?—comes a book that’s part memoir/part inspiration/part DIY. Rob Kenney’s father left him and his seven siblings when he was fourteen years old, and the youngest had to fend for themselves. He wished that he had someone who could teach him the basics—how to tie a tie, jump-start a car, unclog a drain, use tools properly—as well as succeed in life. But he and his siblings had to figure these things out on their own. Now a father himself, Rob decided that he would help people out by providing how-to tips as well as advice—and even throw in some bad dad jokes. He started a YouTube channel for anyone looking for fatherly advice, and in the course of three months, gained a following of nearly 2.5 million subscribers, with millions of views for his how-to and inspirational videos. In this book, Rob shares his story of overcoming a difficult childhood with the strength of faith and family, and offers inspiration and hope. In addition, he provides 50 practical DYI instructions (30 of which will be unique to the book), illustrated with helpful line drawings.

Download or read book Showing Up for Life written by Bill Gates, Sr. and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartfelt, deeply personal book that shines a bright light on the values and principles that Bill Gates Sr. has learned over a lifetime of “showing up”: lessons that he learned growing up during the Great Depression, and that he instilled in his children and continues to practice on the world stage as the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through the course of several dozen narratives arranged in roughly chronological fashion, Gates introduces the people and experiences that influenced his thinking and guided his moral compass. Among them: the scoutmaster who taught him about teamwork and self reliance; and his famous son, Trey, whose curiosity and passion for computers and software led him to ultimately co-found Microsoft. Through revealing stories of his daughters, Kristi and Libby; his late wife, Mary, and his current wife, Mimi; and his work with Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter, among others, he discusses the importance of hard work, getting along, honoring a confidence, speaking out, and much more. Showing Up for Life translates one man’s experiences over fourscore years of living into an inspiring road map for readers everywhere. As Bill Gates Sr. puts it: "I’m 83 years old. Representing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and everyone who is a part of it has given me the opportunity to see more of the world and its rich possibilities than most people ever do. I never imagined that I’d be working this late in life, or enjoying it so much."

Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling...unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father. Download or read book Black Bird written by James Keene and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featured on Dateline and CNN, Black Bird is the true story of a young man destined for greatness on the football field—until a few wrong turns led him to a ten-year prison sentence. He was offered an impossible mission: Coax a confession out of a fellow inmate, a serial killer, and walk free. James Keene grew up outside of Chicago. Although he was the son of a policeman and rubbed shoulders with the city's elite, he ended up on the wrong side of the law and was sentenced to ten years with no chance of parole. Just a few months into his sentence, Keene was approached by the prosecutor who put him behind bars. He had convicted a man named Larry Hall for abducting and killing a fifteen-year-old. Although Hall was suspected of killing nineteen other young women, there was a chance he could still be released on appeal. If Keene could get him to confess to two murders, there would be no doubt about Hall's guilt. In return, Keene would get an unconditional release from prison. But he could also get killed. A story that gained national notoriety, Black Bird is James Keene's powerful tale of peril, violence, and redemption.
Download or read book It Has Taken a Lifetime written by Gene D. Lord and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing this book has been in my bucket list for about twenty-five years. I wanted to share my experiences growing up in the country along with my wonderful family. Marrying my wife Marsha and having our two boys and our four grandchildren have been some of the best blessings a man could have. Sharing my Christian testimony of how God has been with me throughout my life has been so satisfying. God was working on me long before I even realized it. Spending time with my beautiful friends and having experiences with them while hunting, camping, and enjoying the outdoors have been a significant part of who I am. Spending almost fifty years working with Flowers Foods was a wonderful experience that allowed me to meet so many people and share my story with each of them. God has been so good. Some would say I had been successful in life; and as the world may see it, I suppose I have been. However, I believe my most significant success has been “Being right smack dab in the middle of where God wanted me to be.”

Download or read book ME and SAM written by LeRoy Crume and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a skinny little country boy, born in a little community called, Swift, Missouri. Swift wasn’t big enough to be a town. It was just a dusty piece of farm land just off highway 61. That is not even charted on the map anymore. My Dad was a farmer. Not unlike most black men during that time in the south. He earned his living, (that is, if you could call it a living) by the sweat of his brow, plowing up farmland during the fall of the year, and planting come the spring of the year, and then came harvesting time a few months later. That was the ritual for blacks, and a few whites for the rest of their lives. That is, unless they were fortunate like some others, and got a chance to leave that hell hole called a farm. My dad, I’m sure like his father, and grand father before him did the same thing. Walking behind a plow and mules, planting then came the chopping of the cotton and after that came the picking of the cotton. Now that was a life’s ritual from the time you were big enough to walk and talk until you were ready for the grave. What a life. Now the Crume’s were fortunate enough to break that cycle at some point in life .
