Book Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England

Download or read book Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England written by Brooke Conti and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seventeenth-century England wrestled with the aftereffects of the Reformation, the personal frequently conflicted with the political. In speeches, political pamphlets, and other works of religious controversy, writers from the reign of James I to that of James II unexpectedly erupt into autobiography. John Milton famously interrupts his arguments against episcopacy with autobiographical accounts of his poetic hopes and dreams, while John Donne's attempts to describe his conversion from Catholicism wind up obscuring rather than explaining. Similar moments appear in the works of Thomas Browne, John Bunyan, and the two King Jameses themselves. These autobiographies are familiar enough that their peculiarities have frequently been overlooked in scholarship, but as Brooke Conti notes, they sit uneasily within their surrounding material as well as within the conventions of confessional literature that preceded them. Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England positions works such as Milton's political tracts, Donne's polemical and devotional prose, Browne's Religio Medici, and Bunyan's Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners as products of the era's tense political climate, illuminating how the pressures of public self-declaration and allegiance led to autobiographical writings that often concealed more than they revealed. For these authors, autobiography was less a genre than a device to negotiate competing political, personal, and psychological demands. The complex works Conti explores provide a privileged window into the pressures placed on early modern religious identity, underscoring that it was no simple matter for these authors to tell the truth of their interior life—even to themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. From disorganized misery to extreme organizational mania (she used to refer to her children by their household chores: Cat Box Boy, Dishwasher Girl, and Garbage Can Baby), Pierce deals with our fumbling attempts to grow closer to God, encouraging us as she invites us to laugh, cry, love, embrace life, and pray!In her humorous, conversational style, Pierce laughs at her mistakes and her prayers that seem more like advertising jingles (Lord, I need a break today, and Can you hear me now, Lord?). In Confessions of a Prayer Wimp, you’ll come to understand that faith is less about what you are or do or say, and more about who God is—someone who loves you no matter what you do.

Book My Confession of Faith

    Book Details:
  • Author : C. Wayne Pratt
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2014-08-08
  • ISBN : 1499060645
  • Pages : 41 pages

Download or read book My Confession of Faith written by C. Wayne Pratt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible states that the tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21). So often we are speaking death over our life and circumstances by contradicting what God has already declared to be true in His Word. God assured Joshua of prosperity and success in his life if he would do three things: 1) meditate on His Word day and night; 2) be careful to do everything written in that Word; 3) not let the Word depart from his mouth (Joshua 1:8). When we confess God’s Word out loud, we are agreeing with what He has already decreed about our situations. My Confession of Faith is a collection of declarations from the Word of God intended to be read aloud in much the same way that Jesus proclaimed repeatedly in the wilderness, “It is written!” It is a tool to help the believer “prophesy” like Ezekiel and speak life to the dry bones and difficult challenges of their life.

Book Why Creeds and Confessions

Download or read book Why Creeds and Confessions written by Jay Rogers and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a book on the creeds and confessions of the Church? A single book containing the actual texts of the most important creeds of the early Church will not often be found. Out of the multitude of works on the evangelical Christian book market today, those dealing with the creeds of the Church are scarce. This book contains the full texts of the most important creeds of the early Church. The purpose is to put into the reader's hands a book containing the creeds that all Christians throughout the ages - Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant - have believed. When we come to the Reformation period, we will see that the matter of salvation and church government became a matter of debate. However, there has always been a continuous thread of teaching that all Christians have held in common. Why Creeds and Confessions? provides a foundation of biblical orthodoxy as a defense against the false and truly heretical doctrines advanced by the spirit of this age.
