Book excerpt: On 6 September 1966, inside the House of Assembly in Cape Town, Dimitri Tsafendas stabbed to death Hendrik Verwoerd, South Africa’s Prime Minister and so-called “architect of apartheid”. Tsafendas was immediately arrested and before he had even been questioned by the authorities, they declared him a madman without any political motive for the killing. In the Cape Supreme Court, Tsafendas was found unfit to stand trial on the grounds that he suffered from schizophrenia and that he had no political motive for killing Verwoerd. Tsafendas spent the next 28 years in custody, making him the longest-serving detainee in South African history. For most of his incarnation he was subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment by the prison authorities. From 2009 to 2018, Harris Dousemetzis extensively researched the assassination of Verwoerd and the life of Tsafendas. For this research, he travelled to South Africa, Mozambique, Greece, France, and Turkey, and interviewed about 150 people who either knew Tsafendas or Verwoerd or were involved with the case of the assassination. He discovered about 12,000 pages of documents on the case, most of them previously unpublished, in archival collections in South Africa, Portugal and the UK. Dousemetzis collaborated with prominent South African jurists, psychiatrists and psychologists, and concluded his research, by writing the Report to the Minister of Justice in the Matter of Dr. Verwoerd’s Assassination. The report conclusively proved that Tsafendas had assassinated Verwoerd for political reasons and that the apartheid authorities had orchestrated a massive operation to declare him insane and apolitical. This ground-breaking report and this book corrected the historical record regarding Verwoerd’s assassination and Tsafendas. The Man Who Killed Apartheid, based on Dousemetzis’s groundbreaking research, chronicles in detail Tsafendas’s life and conclusively demonstrates that he was a perfectly sane and deeply political person with a long history of political activism. At the same time, the book exposes the lie at the heart of apartheid’s posture on the assassination of Hendrik Verwoerd and provides a rare picture of how the racist regime operated and what it was like to live and die under apartheid.

Through his brilliant use of vernacular speech, Wilson developed unforgettable characters who epitomized the trials and triumphs of the African American experience. He said that he didn’t research his plays but wrote them from “the blood’s memory,” a sense of racial history that he believed African Americans shared. They came from diverse social, educational, and cultural backgrounds, but for all of the writers, engagement with Greek and Roman antiquity was decisive in shaping their war poetry. The world views and cultural hinterlands of Brooke and Sorley were framed by the Greek and Latin texts they had studied at school, whereas for Owen, who struggled with Latin, classical texts were a part of his aspirational literary imagination. Rosenberg's education was limited but he encountered some Greek and Roman literature through translations, and through mediations in English literature. The various ways in which the poets engaged with classical literature are analysed in the commentaries, which are designed to be accessible to classicists and to users from other subject areas. The extensive range of connections made by the poets and by subsequent readers is explained in the Introduction to the volume. The commentaries illuminate relationships between the poems and attitudes to the war at the time, in the immediate post-war years, and subsequently. They also probe how individual poems reveal various facets of the poetry of unease, the poetry of survival, and the poetics of war and ecology. References to the accompanying online Oxford Classical Receptions Commentaries will enable readers to follow up their special interests. This volume differs from the shorter volume Greek and Roman Antiquity in First World War Poetry: Making Connections in that it covers the whole output of the four poets, and not just their war poems.

In this book, Douglas Cantor exposes the causes of term limits at the local level of government to shed light on how and why the movement to adopt term limits came to exist. Cantor begins his analysis by providing a history of term limits, beginning with classical debates in Greek philosophy. He describes the benefits of studying the causes of term limits and how term limits are a direct manifestation of older values rooted in the American traditions of municipal reform. Part II examines 20 different municipalities across the continental United States that experienced a movement to implement term limits through a political campaign, voter initiative, or council-led charter amendment. Written to a common template and examining each case through the lens of the reform impulse, Cantor argues that the institutional lineage of the Progressives, namely council-manager governments, at-large elections, and nonpartisanship, is largely responsible for movements to implement term limits somewhere in the United States in almost every election. Terms Limits and the Modern Era of Municipal Reform brings a new dimension to the Progressive era, championing the study of local politics and its importance to understanding American politics.

Over those years of travel 124 separate trips have been made involving over 450 different flights. In the early years, many were propeller aircraft and then later jet transport but over that period 64 different types have been flown, and each is supported in the book by brief technical notes and a photo. The author’s work in airline operations and then later in the travel agency sector allowed him the opportunity to extensively travel the world and see these sights. Later in retirement, the travel bug has continued. Interspersed into the timeline of the book is the author’s autobiography of his time spent in the three countries he has lived in during his working life.
