Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... MY CHINESE MARRIAGE i IN AMERICA I Saw Chan-King Liang for the first time on a certain Monday morning in October. It was the opening day of college, and the preceding week had been filled with the excitement incidental to the arrival of many students in a small town given over to family life. Every household possessed of a spare room was impressed with the fact that good citizenship demanded that it harbor a student. Therefore, when I saw trunks and boxes and bags being tumbled upon the front porch of our next-door neighbor, I said to Mother, "Mrs. James has succumbed!" and set out for my first class with Celia, an old friend. As we crossed the campus, we noticed a group of boys, gathered on the steps of College Hall and talking among themselves. Celia turned to me. "Do you see the one with very black hair, his face turned away a little--the one in the gray suit, Margaret?--Well, that is the new Chinese student, and the boys all say he is a wonder. My cousin knew him last year in Chicago, where he was a freshman. Going in for international law and political science--imagine!" I turned and glanced with a faint interest at the foreign student, on whose black hair the sun was shining. My first impression was of a very"! ( young, smiling lad. "Looks well enough," IJ said, rather ungraciously, and we passed on. I was a busy student, eagerly beginning my freshman year's work, and I thought no more of the young Chinese. But a day or so later I discovered him to be the owner of those trunks and bags I had seen assembled on Mrs. James's porch. Chan-King was my next-door neighbor. We were never introduced to each other, as it happened, and, though we shared studies in Ger-1 man and French, we did not exchange a word I for some time. Later I found...

Book excerpt: A stunning memoir of an intercultural marriage gone wrong When Susan, a shy Midwesterner in love with Chinese culture, started graduate school in Hong Kong, she quickly fell for Cai, the Chinese man of her dreams. As they exchanged vows, Susan thought she'd stumbled into an exotic fairy tale, until she realized Cai—and his culture—where not what she thought. In her riveting memoir, Susan recounts her struggle to be the perfect traditional "Chinese" wife to her increasingly controlling and abusive husband. With keen insight and heart-wrenching candor, she confronts the hopes and hazards of intercultural marriage, including dismissing her own values and needs to save her relationship and protect her newborn son, Jake. But when Cai threatens to take Jake back to China for good, Susan must find the courage to stand up for herself, her son, and her future. Moving between rural China and the bustling cities of Hong Kong and San Francisco, Good Chinese Wife is an eye-opening look at marriage and family in contemporary China and America and an inspiring testament to the resilience of a mother's love—across any border.

Book Love and Marriage in Globalizing China

Download or read book Love and Marriage in Globalizing China written by Wang Pan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As China globalizes, the number of marriages between Chinese people and foreigners is increasing. These Chinese--foreign marriages have profound implications for China’s cultural identity. This book, based on extensive original research, outlines the different types of Chinese--foreign marriage, and divorce, and the changing scale and changing patterns of such marriages, and divorces, and examines how such marriages and divorces are portrayed in different kinds of media. It shows how those types of Chinese--foreign marriage where Chinese patriotism and Chinese values are preserved are depicted favourably, whereas other kinds of Chinese--foreign marriage, especially those where Chinese women marry foreign nationals, are disapproved of, male foreign nationals being seen as having a propensity to infidelity, deception, violence and taking advantage of Chinese women. The book contrasts the portrayal of Chinese--foreign marriage with the reality, and with the depiction of Chinese--Chinese marriage where many of the same problems apply. Overall, the book sheds much light on changing social processes and on current imaginings of China’s place in the world.

Book My Chinese Wedding

Download or read book My Chinese Wedding written by Thad Hughes and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-06-29 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am so happy that one day it finally occurred to me that I am the perfect person to create the foundation for Fun Learning Chinese Language because time and time again I have traveled to China and actually struggled to communicate with local people there. I know from experience which words are vitally important for foreigners to know. I built a language seminar which emphasizes the words which should be given first priority for new Chinese Mandarin speakers . Before you do anything significant in China such as: getting married, starting a business, or buying a home you would be wise to first get to know and understand China and how the Chinese operate. Trust me, it is more than a little different than what you might be use to in your own country. I traveled to China four times prior to buying my first home there, then, ultimately on my fifth visit I finally made a wise purchase. I traveled to China five times prior to having a formal wedding ceremony there and on my sixth trip I finally had the wedding ceremony of my life. You will have the benefit of learning from my experiences which are featured here in My Chinese Wedding. I hope that you will come away with one of the main underlying points of this book: that is, you had best use caution and invest your time wisely by doing some research before you just show up in China with your wallet in hand and void of inside contacts before you really commit to anything costly in China: that includes relationships. That being said, China is a big beautiful and very complex country filled with many wonderful people who 99% of the time will treat you right. Now enjoy the book and DVD called My Chinese Wedding. The book is a journey of sex, betrayal, love triangles, and ultimately true romance with a very happy ending. I had a blast living the journey and I hope that you will have a blast taking a deep look inside of the mysterious and seemingly closed walls of the People's Republic of China.
