Book Family Roots

Download or read book Family Roots written by Robert Elias Ballard and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genealogy is a fascinating study. All of us who were born on the native soil of the United States owe a debt of gratitude to our forebears. Much information for heritage studies is available on the internet. While doing research on my family I learned so much. For some it meant leaving the familiar and a three month voyage across the Atlantic. Some came to America because they were persecuted for their religious beliefs while some came searching for the proverbial end of the rainbow. I discovered family members who were involved in the Revolutionary War. One of my wife's family members was in five battles including the Battle of Cowpens, a turning point in the war. Two other family members were also present. I wondered if they might have know one another. I also learned of my mothers family who came here from Scotland as a stone mason helping to build a notable bridge in the upstate of South Carolina. I learned much about my ancestors and now am even more proud of my heritage. I wrote this as a labor of love because I wanted my children and grand children to be able to know their family roots and to be proud of their heritage. Having compiled this book will enable them to know this information. For others, reading this book may be the impetus for a great adventure for further genealogy studies. I have also included some stories from my own journey of life. These are life experiences, stories and tales from my own life.

Book excerpt: Inspired by real, hundred-year-old love letters. My great-grandmother's name is bold across the cream envelope, now golden at the seams with age. I can't remember the last time I’ve seen graceful, purposeful handwriting with a fountain pen and not the hasty scrawl of ballpoint. Alice Hirshhorn, Astoria Hotel, Seattle Washington. “Letters to Great-grandma Alice,” I say with wonder, tracing my fingers over the faded postmark and foreign stamps. December 1915. Philippine Islands. I turn the thick envelope in my palm, slide out the tightly folded pages, and unfold the thin paper, taking care not to tear the letters that were important enough to keep for a century. My dearest Alice “Great-grandpa was in the Philippines?” I ask. “Oh no. Not your great-grandfather,” answers Grammie, her eyes twinkling with her mother’s secrets. “Elliott.” ~~~ At thirty-three and with her future unclear, Ali Waller finds her way home again. A box of long-forgotten love letters written to her great-grandmother holds the unlikely key to Ali finding her new path. As she tracks down the letter writer and his descendants, Ali learns the magic of love, hope, and resilience. Told by three characters, and across century and an ocean, Genealogy is an enchanting story about love and loss, taking chances, and embracing the surprises that life brings. A twelve question discussion guide is included, making Genealogy a perfect choice for your book club or a buddy read.

Book We Were Illegal

Download or read book We Were Illegal written by Jessica Goudeau and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning author's deep exploration of pivotal moments in Texas history through multiple generations of her own family, and a ruthless reexamination of our national and personal myths Seven generations of Jessica Goudeau’s family have lived in Texas, and her family’s legacy—a word she heard often growing up—was rooted in faith, right-living, and the hard work that built their great state. It wasn’t until her aunt mentioned a stowaway ancestor and she began to dig more deeply into the story of the land she lives on today in suburban Austin, that Goudeau discovered her family’s far more complicated role in Texas history: from a swindling land grant agent in the earliest days of Anglo settlement that brought slavery to Mexican land, up through her Texas Ranger great-uncle, who helped a sociopathic sheriff cover up mass murder. Tracking her ancestors’ involvement in pivotal moments from before the Texas Revolution through today, We Were Illegal is at once an intimate and character-driven narrative and an insider’s look at a state that prides itself on its history. It is an act of reckoning and recovery on a personal scale, as well as a reflection of the work we all must do to dismantle the whitewashed narratives that are passed down through families, communities, and textbooks. And it is a story filled with hope—by facing these hypocrisies and long-buried histories, Goudeau explores with us how to move past this fractured time, take accountability for our legacy, and learn to be better, more honest ancestors.
