Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sequel to the award-winning Stepping on the Cracks. “Sometimes heart-rending, sometimes funny, Gordy Smith will prove memorable to all who meet him.”—Booklist (starred review) In Following My Own Footsteps, sixth-grader Gordy Smith comes to grips with the fear that he’ll turn out no better than his abusive father . . . With his father now in jail and one brother hospitalized, Gordy’s mother has no choice but to take the family to their wealthy grandmother’s house in North Carolina. There Gordy meets William, a boy who had polio and is now wheelchair bound. Though they become friends, Gordy’s plans to help William fail spectacularly. Matters only get worse when Gordy’s father is released from prison and his mother is poised to give him a second chance. Gordy must decide where he belongs—with his dysfunctional parents or with the grandma who is more than his match in toughness, in courage, and in love. “A cast of unforgettable characters inhabit this work, seasoned with WW II setting but utterly contemporary in its concerns. Hahn is in top form, proving through Gordy’s first-person narration that real love can triumph over all kinds of adversity, and often does.”—Kirkus Reviews “The complex characterizations, period setting and Gordy’s brave attempts to break a cycle of violence will hold readers’ interest.”—Publishers Weekly “It’s a timeless social issue really, in any era, of having a dysfunctional abusive parent . . . A very good story showcasing complex friendships, familial relationships, and inner conflict, all set in WW2 America.”—Cats and Fiction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Brothers Call Me Bird is a profoundly poetic flight through my psyche. Every poem parallels a journey either personal, or witnessed along a detour. Nevertheless my versatile, rhyme-style poetry speaks on what many consider taboo, but unfortunately is very common in the urban communities. As a survivor of and advocate against several abuse types I write to incite emotion. I write to provoke assertiveness. I write to encourage confidence. I write to speak-out for those silenced by abuse, oppression and recession. I write to expose, arouse and inspire. Each chapter is named after a different avian species to illustrate my flights and destinations. Experience appreciation, motivation, apprehension, rejection, courage, hostility, sensuality and hood reality as you read what my eyes have seen. Much Love.

Book The Annual Register Or A View of the History and Politics of the Year

Download or read book The Annual Register Or A View of the History and Politics of the Year written by and published by . This book was released on 1858 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuation of the reference work that originated with Robert Dodsley, written and published each year, which records and analyzes the year’s major events, developments and trends in Great Britain and throughout the world. After 1815 the usual form became a number of chapters on Great Britain, paying particular attention to the proceedings of Parliament, followed by chapters covering other countries in turn, no longer limited to Europe. The expansion of the History came at the expense of the sketches, reviews and other essays so that the nineteenth-century publication ceased to have the miscellaneous character of its eighteenth-century forebear, although poems continued to be included until 1862, and a small number of official papers and other important texts continue to be reproduced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You Thought You Couldn't Change, Either" is a book about the true accounts of the life of Andre Gilchrist. The book is written by Andre Gilchrist and explores how this individual went from living a life of serenity and peacefulness to living a life full of mental, physical, intellectual and spiritual degradation and how he was able to bring himself out of that lifestyle to living the life he lives and enjoys today. The book is written in two parts: "You Thought You Couldn't Change, Either" and "Fear of Intimacy." This book is written with the intention of allowing people to see and internalize the concept that no matter where one is in their life process that they can stop and turn their lives around. The first part of the book is devoted to showing in a chronological process the writer hitting rock bottom and then working his way out of that predicament. The second part of the book deals with the concept of intimacy as it was pivotal in the writer's life. It also deals with the life and struggles of the author and a more intense look into the internal structure of the individual. This is the story of one individual's struggle within himself. This is the story of one individual's journey from desperation to determination. This is the story of an individual exposing his weaknesses in life and having those same weaknesses manifest later in that individual as strengths. His is the story of an individual who has learned in life that everyone has to trust others and allow others to help him and that no one is completely independent of other people.

Book From Orphan to Greatness

Download or read book From Orphan to Greatness written by Pierre Komi T. Adade and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During one of his memorable speeches, President JFK declared, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." This speech marked the beginning of the Peace Corps program in the United States, which in turn led a young American to my small farming village of Agadji in Togo, West Africa. This young American sponsored me into the United States in June of 1989, a fulfillment in itself of my father's secretly held dream to see one of his children educated in an English-speaking Country, better yet in the United States of America. Education has always been very important to my father because he was denied that opportunity due to being an orphan at a very young age. He wished to attend school and become a lawyer or doctor, but instead, he was forced to become a farmer and eventually one of the best-known coffee growers in Togo. In June of 1999, I was able to invite my father to the United States for a year-long visit, during which I was able to enroll him in Kalamazoo Adult Education as another way to fulfill his dream of being a student. In October 2001, I invited my dear mother also to the United States for a year-long visit, giving both my wonderful parents a unique and unforgettable their FIRST plane ride experience. Travel along with me as I journey through a father and son's dream to a better tomorrow.

Book The Lost World of DeMille

Download or read book The Lost World of DeMille written by John Kobal and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2020 Moving Image Book Award by the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation As only an accomplished author, consummate collector, and savvy insider can, John Kobal tells the story of the man who invented Hollywood, Cecil Blount DeMille (1881–1959). Kobal narrates the story of DeMille’s life and follows the director’s career from his first film, The Squaw Man, in 1914, through the seventy films he directed culminating with The Ten Commandments in 1956 before his death in 1959. Even that first film received an enthusiastic response from the public, and that popular enthusiasm would follow DeMille throughout his career. DeMille got his start by observing a film being shot—once standing for hours on a box looking through a window, watching every move made by the director, players, and cameraman. From that humble beginning, he soon mastered the craft of directing and created one of show business’s greatest careers. Autocrat and artist, DeMille immersed himself totally in each picture he directed and demanded complete fealty from his casts and crews. DeMille was said to know more about what the American public wanted than anyone else in Hollywood. He pushed the boundaries of censorship, and audiences responded by forming long lines at the box office. From the American West to ancient Egypt, he created such magical films as The Crusades and The Greatest Show on Earth that brought vividly to life fantasies perfectly suited to post–World War I and mid-century America. Kobal describes DeMille’s impact on Hollywood as a director and showman. He argues that this master filmmaker stands for something largely lost in American filmmaking, a sort of naïve, generous, big-thinking self-confidence—a belief that all things are possible. John Kobal wrote over thirty books on film and photography. His final manuscript, The Lost World of DeMille, was completed shortly before his death in 1991. It is published at last by University Press of Mississippi.
