Download or read book The Changing Decades of a Baby Boomer written by Peter Pounds and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the first day back at school at Clee Grammar, Cleethorpes, the Head, Mr Shaw, started by saying “a new year and new decade “. It was Colin Shaw and it said C. Shaw on his office door. Appropriate for a seaside town! This got me thinking, At the age of 14. a decade had been a lifetime. The next decade would be another life time. In 10 years, I would have done my O and A levels, gone to college and may be even married! 10 years! I could not comprehend it. As it happened, each decade of my life did change dramatically. 50’s school. 60’s Grammar school and college. 70’s Family, allotment and weightlifting. 80’s O.U. and climbing UK. 90’s climbing Europe. 2000’s Retirement. 2010’s mountaineering worldwide and then 2020’s Covid! I started taking photos when I cycled over the Alps in 1964. Since then, I have amassed 7000 slides. 40 years later photography went digital and now I have another 10,000 or so. Therefore this little book is a photographic record of the changing decades of my life.

Download or read book Baby Boomer Blues written by Barbara Linick and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-07-16 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1970's college graduate Zinnia Frisch takes off on a free-spirited adventure through Europe and lands at the magical Spanish island of Ibiza. There, she discovers the exotic sexy cast of international characters who have made this place their home. With $500 and a backpack of belongings, she moves in with the in-crowd. So begins Zinnia's eventful journey as she cuts loose for unknown, forbidden places across four continents - and meets her own Prince Charming, Berend van Bos of the Netherlands. Berend, a millionaire entrepreneur, brings Zinnia into his jet-set life and into the midst of a huge hashish deal replete with Moroccan farmers, clandestine investors, dangerous cover-ups, and Interpol. Zinnia is a baby boomer who chose an alternative lifestyle, one that takes us on an almost unbelievable series of misadventures and surprises that couldn't happen in today's world. It's candid and refreshing, a splendid sun-drenched read with just the right touch of noir underpinning! You will find yourself in Zinnia and her adventures in those carefree early baby boomer days. Review by: Todd Mercer for ForeWord Magazine FOUR STARS 'Where have you been darling? ''Well Ma' I replied, 'I've been in prison in Morocco' She looked at me. 'You must be hungry' "Zinnia Frisch, an expatriate American, and her secretive Dutch husband Beri are preparing a huge transatlantic shipment of hashish from their beach resort in Tangier. They anxiously scan the waves for the running lights of a craft aptly named Wanderlust, half-expecting police to jump from the shadows. Such elongated moments of combined dread and anticipation make exciting lives and dramatic, self-searching fiction. The story backs up five years to 1970 to show how far the daughter of a cryptographer has come from her New York roots. Though she protests against the Vietnam War in college, and speaks vaguely against consumerism, specific ideologies aren't a lasting priority.

Stacey Lynn’s sensual, deeply emotional series heats up as a jaded restaurateur falls hard for a woman who’s hiding from a damaged past. Declan James lost his last ounce of trust the day his wife walked out the door, leaving him to save the restaurant they built together. Throwing himself into his work, Declan swears off women—or at least, women who expect him to stick around in the morning. But when he discovers a skittish beauty scrounging through the Fireside’s trash to feed her dog, Declan offers her a job and a place to rest her head. There’s just something about her that awakens his protective side. And soon, not even that mangy mutt can stop Declan from caring for her. After one too many trips to the ER, Trina Wilson finally gathered the courage to leave her husband, taking only her car and hyperactive boxer. Unfortunately, life on the run proves harder than she anticipated—until Declan takes a leap of faith on her. But even as Trina starts to see beyond his gruff exterior, she can’t relax, even for a moment. Not with her husband still tracking her down. What Trina doesn’t know is that in Declan, she has a powerful ally—and, if she would only follow her heart, a devoted lover. Book Did I Say That Out Loud

Download or read book Did I Say That Out Loud written by Kristin van Ogtrop and published by Little, Brown Spark. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the former editor-in-chief of Real Simple, enjoy this hilarious and deeply insightful take on the indignities of middle age and how to weather them with grace: "A pure pleasure to read" (Cathi Hanauer, author of Gone). Do you hate the term “middle age?” So does Kristin van Ogtrop, who is still trying to come up with a less annoying way to describe those years when you find yourself both satisfied and outraged, confident and confused, full of appreciation but occasional disdain for the world around you. Like an intimate chat with your best friend, this mostly funny, sometimes sad, always affirming volume from longtime magazine journalist van Ogtrop is a celebration of that period of life when mild humiliations are significantly outweighed by a self-actualized triumph of the spirit. Finally! Featuring stories from her own life, as well as anecdotes from her unwitting friends and family, van Ogtrop encourages you to laugh at the small irritations of midlife: neglectful children, stealth insomnia, forks that try to kill you, t.v. remotes that won’t find Netflix, abdominal muscles that can’t seem to get the job done. But also to acknowledge the things you may have lost: innocence, unbridled optimism, smooth skin. Dear friends. Parents. It’s all here: the sublime and the ridiculous, living together in the pages of this book as they do in your heart, like a big messy family, in this no-better-term-for-it middle age.

Download or read book The Years of Living Wet written by John Huetter and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some years ago, having little or no money in my purse and nothing particular to keep me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world." Ishmael, Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, 1851. Has so little changed in 150 years? Finding myself unattached and wandering in the international technology arena, I sold my Victorian-era home, built in 1900 by a sea captain four blocks from San Francisco Bay, and went searching for a boat of my own. After months, I found a British-built catamaran that met my long list of desired on-board features floating in a "creek" of Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis. There was snow on the ground when I first saw Quo Vadis. Sea trials were sailed in gale force winds. The boat was snug inside, sailed flat and sure, and soon became my new home. One of its best features was its ability to take me places I'd never been, where I would meet characters I could not have imagined--or made up. One of them was an exciting woman. We hooked up at a high school reunion: our 40th. Now, I invite you to spend some time with a new, if vintage, skipper on this voyage of discovery. The years go by quickly, I promise you. John Huetter Born into a military family, John Huetter first sailed at age nine, during long summers on the Mediterranean. The boat was 12 ft. long, wooden, with a single canvas sail and hemp rigging. Nearly fifty years later, he went sailing again, this time on a cruising catamaran, from the U.S. East Coast to the West Coast stopping by the Bahamas, Caribbean, South America, en route to the Panama Canal, Central America and Mexico. In between, the author played football and rowed crew in high school, jumped for the USAF Academy Parachute Team, designed computer control systems, raced and tested off-road motorcycles, and started up alternate energy and technology R&D companies. He also had a long, happy relationship and two wonderful children. He's currently looking for that beach with clear, warm water and the perfect surf break.

Book It Came from Something Awful

Download or read book It Came from Something Awful written by Dale Beran and published by All Points Books. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How 4chan and 8chan fuel white nationalism, inspire violence, and infect politics. The internet has transformed the ways we think and act, and by consequence, our politics. The most impactful recent political movements on the far left and right started with massive online collectives of teenagers. Strangely, both movements began on the same website: an anime imageboard called 4chan.org. It Came from Something Awful is the fascinating and bizarre story of sites like 4chan and 8chan and their profound effect on youth counterculture. Dale Beran has observed the anonymous messageboard community's shifting activities and interests since the beginning. Sites like 4chan and 8chan are microcosms of the internet itself—simultaneously at the vanguard of contemporary culture, politics, comedy and language, and a new low for all of the above. They were the original meme machines, mostly frequented by socially awkward and disenfranchised young men in search of a place to be alone together. During the recession of the late 2000’s, the memes became political. 4chan was the online hub of a leftist hacker collective known as Anonymous and a prominent supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement. But within a few short years, the site’s ideology spun on its axis; it became the birthplace and breeding ground of the alt-right. In It Came from Something Awful, Beran uses his insider’s knowledge and natural storytelling ability to chronicle 4chan's strange journey from creating rage-comics to inciting riots to—according to some—memeing Donald Trump into the White House.

Book Emergency

  • Author : Neil Strauss
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2009-03-10
  • ISBN : 0060898771
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Emergency written by Neil Strauss and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorist attacks. Natural disasters. Domestic crackdowns. Economic collapse. Riots. Wars. Disease. Starvation. What can you do when it all hits the fan? You can learn to be self-sufficient and survive without the system. **I've started to look at the world through apocalypse eyes.** So begins Neil Strauss's harrowing new book: his first full-length worksince the international bestseller The Game, and one of the most original-and provocative-narratives of the year. After the last few years of violence and terror, of ethnic and religious hatred, of tsunamis and hurricanes–and now of world financial meltdown–Strauss, like most of his generation, came to the sobering realization that, even in America, anything can happen. But rather than watch helplessly, he decided to do something about it. And so he spent three years traveling through a country that's lost its sense of safety, equipping himself with the tools necessary to save himself and his loved ones from an uncertain future. With the same quick wit and eye for cultural trends that marked The Game, The Dirt, and How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, Emergency traces Neil's white-knuckled journey through today's heart of darkness, as he sets out to move his life offshore, test his skills in the wild, and remake himself as a gun-toting, plane-flying, government-defying survivor. It's a tale of paranoid fantasies and crippling doubts, of shady lawyers and dangerous cult leaders, of billionaire gun nuts and survivalist superheroes, of weirdos, heroes, and ordinary citizens going off the grid. It's one man's story of a dangerous world–and how to stay alive in it. Before the next disaster strikes, you're going to want to read this book. And you'll want to do everything it suggests. Because tomorrow doesn't come with a guarantee...
