Book excerpt: Everyone has a story. It's true. Some are sad stories of hardship and tragedy, while others are full of laughter and joy. I've been transfixed by tales of travel to the farthest reaches of the globe, or daring adventures of skydiving, bunji jumps and scuba diving (nothing, by the way I would EVER try- these people are nuts. Who jumps out of a perfectly good airplane?) Mammoth acts kindness and courage renew my faith in mankind, and I've been bored senseless by a neighbor who has chosen me as the sounding board for their inane anecdotes. So you see- good, bad or boring- everyone has a story. Mindy's musings is a collection of my real life experiences stemming from every day encounters with family, friends and colleagues. These seemingly mundane events are anything but boring! You'll meet Mom, a leading competitor and favorite to take the gold in the Jewish Mother Olympics. Her best friends, Food and Worry, make frequent appearances, as do a host of characters who will make you scratch your head, laugh or really feel good about your own situation. As you thumb through the pages of my "escapades through the extraordinarily ordinary", you'll learn how I to use humor to combat fear, anxiety and a myriad of other challenges. Lessons of how to handle Mom's false arrest at TJ MAXX and coping with party disasters will be bestowed upon you. Finally, this digest of the daily dilemmas that result from both voluntary and involuntary human interaction is chalk full of priceless nuggets that are sure to remind you of someone you know- maybe even yourself!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While growing up in Brooklyn, Abby November’s grandmother, Bubbe, always told her, “You’ll miss me when I’m a candle.” Soon, it became evident that Bubbe’s uncanny wit was genetic as November transformed into a kid who loved creating amusing repartees. In a collection of personal essays, prose, poetry, and recipes, November shares insight into her life experiences and relationships while being raised in a multi-generational home in Brooklyn, New York, with her parental grandparents, Bubbe and Zayde, whose zest for life, liverwurst sandwiches, an egg cream at Crazy Joe’s candy shop, and sitting on the stoop naming constellations became an integral part of November’s upbringing. While November’s writings detail how she eventually left to attend an internship program in Boston, married and had two children, earned three degrees, and became a stand-up comedian, they also shine a light on how the wisdom of her elder family members became a north star for her to follow through her adult life. Tales of a Bubbe is a collection of personal essays, prose, poetry, and recipes shared from the heart and mind of a woman reflecting on love, laughter, and wonderful memories.

Download or read book So They Call You Pisher written by Michael Rosen and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliant family memoir of the much-beloved poet and political campaigner In this hilarious, moving memoir, much-loved children’s poet and political campaigner Michael Rosen recalls the first twenty-three years of his life. He was born in the North London suburbs, and his parents, Harold and Connie, both teachers, first met as teenage Communists in the Jewish East End of the 1930s. The family home was filled with stories of relatives in London, the United States and France and of those who had disappeared in Europe. Different from other children, Rosen and his brother, Brian, grew up dreaming of a socialist revolution. Party meetings were held in the front room. Summers were for communist camping holidays. But it all changed after a trip to East Germany when, in 1957, his parents decided to leave ‘the Party’. From that point, Michael followed his own journey of radical self-discovery: running away to Aldermaston to march against the bomb; writing and performing in experimental political theatre at Oxford; getting arrested during the 1968 movements. The book ends with a letter to his father, and the revelation of a heartbreaking family secret.
Download or read book A Taytsh Manifesto written by Saul Noam Zaritt and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Taytsh Manifesto calls for a translational paradigm for Yiddish studies and for the study of modern Jewish culture. Saul Noam Zaritt calls for a shift in vocabulary, from Yiddish to taytsh, in order to promote reading strategies that account for the ways texts named as Jewish move between languages and cultures. Yiddish, a moniker that became dominant only in the early twentieth century, means “Jewish” and thus marks the language with a single identity: of and for a Jewish collective. In contrast, this book calls attention to an earlier and, at one time, more common name for the language: taytsh, which initially means “German.” By using the term taytsh, speakers indicated that they were indeed speaking a Germanic language, a language that was not entirely their own. In time, when the word shifted to a verb, taytshn, it came to mean the act of translation. To write or speak in Yiddish is thus to render into taytsh and inhabit the gap between languages. A Taytsh Manifesto highlights the cultural porousness that inheres in taytsh and deploys the term as a paradigm that can be applied to a host of modern Jewish cultural formations. The book reads three corpora in modern Yiddish culture through the lens of translation: Yiddish pulp fiction, also known as shund (trash); the genre of the Yiddish monologue as authored by Sholem Aleichem and other prominent Yiddish writers; and the persistence of Yiddish as a language of vulgarity in contemporary U.S. culture. Together these examples help revise current histories of Yiddish while demonstrating the need for new vocabularies to account for the multidirectionality of Jewish culture. A Taytsh Manifesto develops a model for identifying, in Yiddish and beyond, how cultures intertwine, how they become implicated in world systems and empire, and how they might escape such limiting and oppressive structures.
