Book My Beloved Poilus Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Beloved Poilus Classic Reprint written by Agnes Warner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Beloved Poilus Two outstanding features give special merit to these letters. They were not written for publication, but for an intimate circle of rela tives and friends. And because of this they are not artificial, but are free and graceful, with homely touches here and there which add so much to their value. Amidst the incessant roar of mighty guns; surrounded by the wounded and the dying; shivering at times with cold, and wearied almost to the point of exhaustion, these letters were hurriedly penned. No time had she for finely-turned phrases. Neither were they necessary. The simple statements appeal more to the heart than most eloquent words. Book Nurse Writers of the Great War

Download or read book Nurse Writers of the Great War written by Christine Hallett and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The First World War was the first ‘total war’. Its industrial weaponry damaged millions of men and drove whole armies underground into dangerously unhealthy trenches. Many were killed. Many more suffered terrible, life-threatening injuries: wound infections such as gas gangrene and tetanus, exposure to extremes of temperature, emotional trauma and systemic disease. In an effort to alleviate this suffering, tens of thousands of women volunteered to serve as nurses. Of these, some were experienced professionals, while others had undergone only minimal training. But regardless of their preparation, they would all gain a unique understanding of the conditions of industrial warfare. Until recently their contributions, both to the saving of lives and to our understanding of warfare, have remained largely hidden from view. By combining biographical research with textual analysis, Nurse writers of the great war opens a window onto their insights into the nature of nursing and the impact of warfare.

Book Easing Pain on the Western Front

Download or read book Easing Pain on the Western Front written by Paul E. Stepansky and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I is regarded as the first modern war, driven by fearful new technologies of mechanized combat. The unprecedented carnage rapidly advanced military medicine, transforming the nature of wartime caregiving and paving the way for modern nursing practice. Drawing on firsthand accounts of American nurses, as well as their Canadian and British counterparts, historian Paul E. Stepansky describes nurses' encounters with devastating new forms of injury--wounds from high-explosive artillery shells, poison gas burns, "shell shock," the Spanish Flu. Comparing nursing practice on the western front with nursing care during the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and the Anglo-Boer War, the author is especially attentive to the emergent technologies employed by nurses of the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PERFUME FROM PROVENCE, which became an instant bestseller when it was first published in the 1930s, created a world that was both nostalgic and unique. Telling of Lady Fortescue’s home in Provence, it was followed by SUNSET HOUSE, the story of her reclamation of a smaller, old stone farmhouse where she lived after her husband’s death. It was from Sunset House, set in a little lost village perched on a peak of the Alpes Maritimes, that she watched the Mobilisation Générale at the beginning of WWII. Thousands of weary French soldiers, called from their homes at a moment’s notice, tramped past Sunset House. The French Army boarded many of the officers on her but, so concerned was she at the plight of the humble poilu, that she immediately set about finding food and shelter for them. With the help of her friend ‘Mademoiselle’, she began to set up foyers all over Provence where the mobilised men could rest and pass their leisure. Then, as the war advanced, as Calais fell to the Germans, Lady Fortescue realised she was about to be trapped in France as an enemy alien and so began her mad dash across the country to Brittany, only a little ahead of the German Army, to make her escape on one of the last boats to leave France.
