Book My Bag Was Always Packed

Download or read book My Bag Was Always Packed written by Claudine Curry Smith and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel of action and ideas, Rose Smith wants to live among the "the oldest things in the world." While working in Los Angeles, a photo of Peru's Machu Picchu attracts her attention. "Stone city, blue sky. Home," she ruminates. Impulsively, she goes. There she meets a university professor, Carlos Urbina Delgado. They fall in love during a long trip down the dry Peruvian coast into the ancient mountain city of Cuzco. Through Carlos, Rose sees the poverty of the once-proud Inca, ponders the endurance of these and other indigenous peoples and wonders if the world can survive without them. Rose sees Los Angeles differently when she returns as a city without a soul, divorced from its roots in early native people. Overcome by loneliness, Rose retreats into work. Slowly she moves forward in her quest. She rediscovers her passion for painting and joins in fighting for the rights of indigenous people. Carlos visits, but she has one more journey she must make: to Guatemala where the indigenous Maya have survived three decades of war. There, in the cities' markets and the country's highlands, in violence that pits Indian against European and nearly ends her life, Rose looks for her answers.

Book Pack My Bag A Self Portrait

Download or read book Pack My Bag A Self Portrait written by Henry Green and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1993-04-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A luminous autobiography by one of England's most original, delightful, writers. In 1938 Henry Green, then thirty-three, dreaded the coming war and decided to "put down what comes to mind before one is killed." Pack My Bag was published in England in 1940. When he wrote it, Green had already published three of his nine novels and his style"a gathering web of insinuations"was fully developed. Pack My Bag is a marvelously quirky, clear-eyed memoir: a mother who shot at mangle wurzels (turnips) bowled across the lawn for her by the servants; the stately home packed with wounded World War I soldiers; the miseries of Eton, oddities of Oxford, and work in the family factory—the making of a brilliantly original novelist. "We have inherited the greatest orchestra, the English language, to conduct," Green once wrote. "The means are there; things are going on in life all the time around us." His use of language and his account of things that went on in his life inform this delightful and idiosyncratic autobiography, which begins: "I was born a mouthbreather with a silver spoon."

Book My Account

Download or read book My Account written by Coleen Rooney and published by Random House. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE OFFICIAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY FROM COLEEN ROONEY Written in her own words, this candid account takes an intimate, behind the scenes look at the reality of a life lived on social media and under the scrutiny of the public eye. ‘It was the biggest thing that had ever happened to me, and like nothing I’d ever experienced... Looking back on it now, it still amazes me how inflated it all got, how ridiculous, how serious. That’s why I need to tell what happened in full...’ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coleen Rooney has always been true to herself. In My Account, she tells us how her upbringing prepared her for a life in the full glare of public and media scrutiny. In fact, from an early age, she was no stranger to responsibility, having two younger brothers as well as welcoming disabled foster sister Rosie into the family. At just seventeen, she and boyfriend Wayne left their childhood homes to live together and in time they had their own young family to care for. But being married to one of the world’s most successful sportsmen has also meant that any private difficulties they faced were inevitably exposed very publicly. And that is no more true than in the now infamous tale of how a casual acquaintance of Coleen’s ended in an extraordinary deception. Here, she recounts how she first suspected someone was betraying her trust (and how devastated it left her), and then the meticulous steps she took to identify, trap and finally reveal to the world her suspect. With the consequences playing out around the world and Coleen dragged unwillingly into a devastating court case whose outcome was far from certain, only now can she candidly give us her side of the story. This, then, is My Account, Coleen Rooney’s tale of what it means to stand up for yourself and your family. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Book Andrew Penman s Long Unwinding Road

Download or read book Andrew Penman s Long Unwinding Road written by Andrew Penman and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a very young age, I always knew I would have an accident and would be doing everything that I am doing at present, from health and fitness to aikido. My first physiotherapist, Debbie Harris (maiden name), got me on my feet and taught me to walk again, saying, "The rest is up to you." People with damage to the right temporal lobe are partially psyched, I am also in a mildly euphoric state (which me means I am happy all the time). Old friends I had before the accident said I have exactly the same sense of humor. I suppose it is the brain's way of keeping me in the dark about the situation I was in. I would like the give my mother special thanks as she gave up her life to look after me. My wife, Lalita, who says there is no one else on this planet like me. My aikido sensei, Peter Gillard, who always stood by me, Kenetsuka Sensei, who overcame cancer through his aikido practice, and the countless others who have helped me at vital stages and important times during my long and winding journey on the road to recovery The aim of this book is to give able and disabled people hope as when I had the accident, I had no one to guide me or to follow as surviving a traumatic brain injury was virtually unheard of, but now they are keeping people alive on a ventilator. I had to learn by my mistakes. Fortunately, they weren't many. It's all been a very slow job. No pain, no gain.

Book Always Pack a Candle

Download or read book Always Pack a Candle written by Marion McKinnon Crook and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of an adventurous young nurse who provided much-needed health care to the rural communities of the Cariboo-Chilcotin in the 1960s. In 1963, newly minted public health nurse Marion McKinnon arrived in the small community of Williams Lake in BC's Cariboo region. Armed with more confidence than experience, she got into her government-issued Chevy—packed with immunization supplies, baby scales, and emergency drugs—and headed out into her 9,300-square-kilometre territory, inhabited by ranchers; mill workers; and many vulnerable men, women, and children who were at risk of falling through the cracks of Canada's social welfare system. At twenty-two, a naïve yet enthusiastic Marion relied entirely on her academic knowledge and her common sense. She doled out birth control and parenting advice to women who had far more life experience than she. She routinely dealt with condescending doctors and dismissive or openly belligerent patients. She immunized school children en masse and made home visits to impoverished communities. She drove out into the vast countryside in freezing temperatures, with only a candle, antifreeze, chains, and chocolate bars as emergency equipment. In one year, Marion received a rigorous education in the field. She helped countless people, made many mistakes, learned to recognize systemic injustice, and even managed to get into a couple of romantic entanglements. Always Pack a Candle is an unforgettable and eye-opening memoir of one frontline worker's courage, humility, and compassion.
