Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller. Over 20 million copies sold! Translated into 60+ languages! Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving--every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results. If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights. Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, readers will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field. Learn how to: make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy); overcome a lack of motivation and willpower; design your environment to make success easier; get back on track when you fall off course; ...and much more. Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success, and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits--whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal.

Download or read book Daily Aspirations written by Renetta Maze and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three years ago, I lost my job. I didn't know how I was going to make it being that I was a single woman. I'd been doing things "my way" for the longest. I now know that when God instructs you to carry out his will for your life, there are consequences when you don't adhere. Although I was going through a tough time, my faith never wavered. I continued to spend quality time with God, attend worship service on Sunday ( even when I didn't have a tithe) and help as many people as I could. During this time, I began to hear what God was saying to me much clearer than I'd ever heard him. It was as if I was literally conversing with another human being. Each day he would whisper words of encouragement to me. I in turn would write it down, put it in text form and forwarded it to family and friends to encourage them.

It is for those who are ready to take a step back from their regular routines to think seriously about another question: "Does what I'm doing today relate to my dreams and my identity?" The questions above pertain to personal development, a theme that has recently become a responsibility for individuals in corporate organizations and higher-educational institutions. In so doing, he guides the reader through questions that give meaning and value to decisions about work, lifestyle and development, such as: Who will I become? How can I transform my dreams into reality? How do I balance my lifestyle and career priorities? What challenges and changes should I expect in today's global workplace? We all long for meaningful relationships, lives that reflect goodness, engagements with beauty, and the freedom to pursue our lives with integrity. But where can our restless hearts find fulfillment for these universal longings? Philosopher and apologist Greg Ganssle argues that our widely shared human aspirations are best understood and explained in the light of the Christian story. With grace and insight, Ganssle explains how the good news of Jesus Christ makes sense of—and fulfills—our deepest desires. It is only in the particular claims of the Christian faith, he argues, that our universal human aspirations can find fulfillment and our restless hearts will be at peace.

Book excerpt: Being psychic, I should have known I'd end up living in Guntersville, Alabama--the most dangerous place for me given the exponential growth of my paranormal "gifts." An ironic twist of fate. Right?I'm only back in my hometown temporarily. I hope. What other choice do I have when my long-held dream of being a high-dollar defense attorney was stolen from me in Atlanta? Moving home was a frugal decision on my part, but it's not free. There are a mind-blowing number of strings attached-all unspoken, of course. We are southern, after all. It's rude to ask directly.I'm grateful for the room and board while I prepare for my rise from the ashes with a spectacular plan "B" to start my life. Still, it leaves me cobbling together odd jobs to pay for my monstrous student loan debts. My brother Dusty is researching the next installment of his best-selling "Thirteen Haunts" novel series. My "gifts" are in high demand. He offers me an obscene amount of money to assist his paranormal investigation team. The team's next excursion is to the Osborne hotel in Paducah, Kentucky. A poltergeist recently caused the death of one of the hotel staff.I must decrease my involvement with paranormal events. I've noticed with each exposure to the supernatural, my strange powers level up. Still, I'm going on their ghost hunting excursion. Did I mention the job pays exceptionally well?Uncle Howard left the law office in my hands while he takes a vacation to the beach. I think he has a love interest in Mobile. Not that it's any of my beeswax, except I'm left responsible for planning a credible defense to keep a mom of four out of jail, and I could use his advice. She's charged with murdering her husband-the prosecution is out for blood-no pressure there, of course. As if my dance card isn't full enough, Shane White, my "I wish he were my boyfriend" guy friend, comes for a visit.

Book Aspiration

Download or read book Aspiration written by Agnes Callard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming someone is a learning process; and what we learn is the new values around which, if we succeed, our lives will come to turn. Agents transform themselves in the process of, for example, becoming parents, embarking on careers, or acquiring a passion for music or politics. How can such activity be rational, if the reason for engaging in the relevant pursuit is only available to the person one will become? How is it psychologically possible to feel the attraction of a form of concern that is not yet one's own? How can the work done to arrive at the finish line be ascribed to one who doesn't (really) know what one is doing, or why one is doing it? In Aspiration, Agnes Callard asserts that these questions belong to the theory of aspiration. Aspirants are motivated by proleptic reasons, acknowledged defective versions of the reasons they expect to eventually grasp. The psychology of such a transformation is marked by intrinsic conflict between their old point of view on value and the one they are trying to acquire. They cannot adjudicate this conflict by deliberating or choosing or deciding-rather, they resolve it by working to see the world in a new way. This work has a teleological structure: by modeling oneself on the person he or she is trying to be, the aspirant brings that person into being. Because it is open to us to engage in an activity of self-creation, we are responsible for having become the kinds of people we are.

Book Pushing the Limits

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sakre K. Edson
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 1988-01-30
  • ISBN : 1438401868
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Pushing the Limits written by Sakre K. Edson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-01-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By providing new understanding and insights into the backgrounds and experiences of women pursuing administrative careers in education, Pushing the Limits fills a critical void in the existing literature. Sakre Edson's five-year investigation documents the accounts of 142 nonminority and minority women across the United States seeking administrative roles—an area of public school responsibility where women remain underrepresented. Edson's book is unique in its focus on aspirants—those women currently preparing and competing for principalships and other top administrative positions—rather than on established female administrators or on women who have chosen not to aspire beyond the classroom. The female teachers, graduate students, and entry-level administrators quoted here give voice to the struggles would-be female school executives face, and their experiences and reflections not only question the impact of the women's movement and equity legislation upon employment practices, but serve to illuminate the problems of women and minorities excluded from managerial ranks in professions outside of education. Throughout the work one theme prevails: As they push the limits of this traditional male bastion, these women are confident in their abilities to succeed and even to excel in managing the nation's schools.

Book Built to Help Each Other

Download or read book Built to Help Each Other written by John C. Crosby and published by Radius Book Group. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Caruso and John Crosby started the Uncommon Individual Foundation in 1986 with the belief that mentoring was the key to unlock human potential and individual growth, paving the way to meaningful and productive lives. Crusoe had a vision for a book revealing the importance of mentoring in his own life, and now his partner takes up the mantle to share it as a way to inspire others to achieve their own goals. Born in Atlantic City to first generation Italian Americans, Caruso’s life started with humble beginnings as a young boy shining shoes on the boardwalk, to founding Integra LifeSciences. With hard work, tenacity and a “never-give-up” attitude, he obtained FDA-approval for IntegraTM, a genetically engineered artificial skin, which finally reached the commercial market after 14 years and has saved the lives of thousands of patients throughout the world—not just those fighting extensive burns, but those with chronic skin diseases. Crosby shares their cutting-edge systems of mentoring as developed by Caruso at the London School of Economics. He explains how these systems work, which not only include people as powerful mentors, but also multiple resources such as books, poems, speeches, videos, and art. He details Caruso’s involvement as an entrepreneur in starting FedEx, PECO, Verizon, Provco, and other start-ups as examples of how he worked and lived. In telling Caruso’s story, Crosby shares his friend’s life with humor and personal memories of how they created the Uncommon Individual Foundation and implemented their innovative mentoring philosophy in over 200 organizations in the U.S. and globally. Most importantly, their life stories are beacons of light to encourage readers to find true value in mentoring to help themselves and others find success and happiness in their own lives.
