Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A specially-photographed celebration of animal families, sure to capture the imagination of any child. In his new book for children, Steve Bloom has focused his camera on fourteen species of wild animal families: bears, cheetahs, chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, hippos, lions, orangutans, pandas, penguins, rhinos, seals, and zebras. Each family is featured over four pages, and the broad array of subjects is guaranteed to entice and amuse young readers. The photographs explore every facet of family life, from feeding and grooming to playing and hunting. Entertaining and lively texts by children’s author David Henry Wilson accompany the entries and explain anything and everything of interest: why hippo families like to wallow in mud, what noises baby giraffes make, and why you should always look at a zebra’s ears.

Book My Family and Other Animals

Download or read book My Family and Other Animals written by Gerald Durrell and published by Penguin Books Limited. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What we all need,' said Larry, 'is sunshine . . . a country where we can grow.' 'Yes, dear, that would be nice,' agreed Mother, not really listening. 'I had a letter from George this morning - he says Corfu's wonderful. Why don't we pack up and go to Greece?' 'Very well, dear, if you like,' said Mother unguardedly. Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family - acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long-suffering mother and Roger the dog - take off for the island of Corfu. But the Durrells find that, reluctantly, they must share their various villas with a menagerie of local fauna - among them scorpions, geckos, toads, bats and butterflies. Recounted with immense humour and charm My Family and Other Animals is a wonderful account of a rare, magical childhood. 'Durrell has an uncanny knack of discovering human as well as animal eccentricities' Sunday Telegraph

Book My Animal Life

Download or read book My Animal Life written by Maggie Gee and published by Saqi. This book was released on 2011-08-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you become a writer, and why? Maggie Gee's journey starts a long way from the literary world in a small family in post-war Britain. At seventeen, Maggie goes, a lamb to the slaughter, to university. From the 1960s onwards she lives the defining events of her generation: the coming of the Pill and sexual freedom, tremors in the British layer-cake of class and race. In the 1980s, Maggie finally gets published, falls in love, marries and has a daughter -- but for the next three decades and beyond, she survives, and sometimes thrives, by writing. This frank, bold memoir dares to explore the big questions: success and failure, sex, death and parenthood -- our animal life. 'A wise and beautiful book about what it feels like to be alive -- I really loved it' Zadie Smith 'Exceptionally interesting and brave ... a wonderful book' Claire Tomalin 'A fine, honest, complex portrait of an artist's mind' Michele Roberts, Independent 'Every word strikes like a hammer on an anvil, throwing off sizzling sparks' Bidisha, The f word 'Anyone who yearns for that lost post-war Britain would do well to read this vivid, minutely observed memoir ...Gee has a sensuous eye for detail' Sinclair McKay, Telegraph 'It is a testament to Gee's skill with structure, her lightness of touch and her honesty, particularly about the most painful episodes, that she has fashioned this account of a fundamentally satisfying and happy writer's life into such a page-turner.' Melissa Benn, New Statesman 'Maggie Gee writes with such courage and wit. This is a vivid portrait of a woman finding her way through the maze of class ridden post war England, the 60's, feminism and how to be a mother and a writer.' Diana Melly 'Highly recommended for all aspiring writers' Bernardine Evaristo 'Observant, honest and sensitively-written...' Michael Holroyd 'Fresh and funny ... with a zest for living that bounces off the page...' Psychologies 'Sensitive, honest, courageous, stylish' The Times '[Gee's] utterly compelling on the rollercoaster of writing life, from early success to rock-bottom rejection. Often joyous; infinitely wise; passionate and poised, this is a book you'll want to sit in silence with and hug to yourself -- then start again.' Daily Mail

Book Raised by Animals

Download or read book Raised by Animals written by Jennifer L. Verdolin and published by The Experiment + ORM. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to family matters, do humans know best? Leading animal behaviorist Dr. Jennifer Verdolin argues otherwise in this eye-opening book. Welcome to the wild world of raising a family in the animal kingdom . . . sometimes shocking, often ingenious! Every species can surprise us: Chimps have a knack for minimizing temper tantrums, and owl chicks have a remarkable gift for sharing. A prairie vole knows exactly when his stressed-out partner needs a massage. And anyone who considers reptiles “cold-blooded” should consider the caecilian, a snakelike animal from Kenya: After laying eggs, the mother grows a fatty layer of skin, which her babies eat after hatching (not one of the book’s many lessons from the wild to be tried at home!). Along the way Verdolin challenges our often counterproductive beliefs about what families ought to be like and how we should feel. By finding common ground with our furry, feathered, and even slimy cousins, we can gain new insight on what “natural” parenting really means—and perhaps do a better job of forgiving ourselves for those days when we’re “only human”!

Book A Snarl Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Francis Pearring
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2023-01-20
  • ISBN : 1666757845
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book A Snarl Theology written by John Francis Pearring and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Snarl Theology calls God a merciful creator, a big-picture divinity, bigger than anything imaginable. Scripture confirms that in the restoration of the world and all its environs, there will be a settlement between God and his creatures. A covenant to set animals and us back as we were meant to be. “I will make a covenant for them on that day, with the beasts of the field, with the birds of the air, and with the things that crawl on the ground.” (Hosea 2:20) Redemption is the divine act of follow-through regarding covenant—washing away our faults, defects, and foibles and taking us into the arms of the divine. Are animals rewarded with redemption, like us—with a full restoration? To imagine that God will not reward these martyred creatures, who play a significant role in human redemption, weakens the concept and promise of paradise. Animals are sentient beyond our understanding, residents in a universe where God communicates with everyone. This animal kingdom theology implies that animals, too, hear God’s voice. A Snarl Theology’s hope for animals to be our redemptive allies shouldn’t cancel doctrine, upset dogma, or countermand Christianity. It should increase our love of God.

Book When Life Gives You Lemurs

Download or read book When Life Gives You Lemurs written by Deborah Kane and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story of courage, generosity and the tender power of animals to heal humans. 'A compelling story, beautifully told, about how animals can show you a way forward.' - Richard Glover A story of the tender power of animals to heal broken humans. Tim Husband was born into a Jehovah's Witness family who spent their weekends delivering God's Word. Struggling to fit into this orthodox community, he found refuge in the bush, collecting and caring for injured animals. At fourteen, Tim was thrown out of home by his father and the church elders. He was taken in by the owner of the local zoo, and in exchange for a bed and food, Tim spent the next ten years caring for the wild animals. Patiently observing these exotic creatures gave Tim his first true sense of belonging as well as the courage to navigate healing the wounds from his traumatic childhood inside a strict religious community. He also found he had a talent for enriching the lives of the animals he spent time with, by redesigning their habitats closer to those found in nature. Tim is one of a handful of international specialists known for their expertise in animal care. He has directed, designed and curated at some of the best-known zoos in the world, building a reputation as an exotic animal whisperer. Deborah Kane has written scripts for children's television and short films as well as plays for theatre. She has worked for the communications director for the Australian Human Rights Commission.
