Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Air-Ships the Story of My Life Two young Brazilian boys strolled in the shade, conversing. They were simple youths Of the interior, knowing only the plenty of the primi tive plantation where, undisturbed by labour saving devices, Nature yielded man her fruits at the price of the sweat Of his brow. They were ignorant of machines to the extent that they had never seen a waggon or a wheel barrow. Horses and oxen bore the burdens of plantation life on their backs, and placid Indian labourers wielded the spade and the hoe. Yet they were thoughtful boys. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning: Don’t Believe the Hype! All the poet called Sleepy wants to do is spit his verses, smoke chiba, and stay off the COP’s radar—all of which becomes impossible once he encounters a professional protestor known as (120 Degrees of) Knowledge Allah. They soon find themselves on the wrong side of local authorities and have to elude the powers that be. When young heiress Sophine Jefferson’s father is murdered, the careful life she’d been constructing for herself tumbles around her. She’s quickly drawn into a web of intrigue, politics and airships, joining with Sleepy and Knowledge Allah in a fight for their freedom. Chased from one end of a retro-fitted Indianapolis to the other, they encounter outlaws, the occasional circus, possibly a medium, and more outlaws. They find themselves in a battle much larger than they imagined: a battle for control of the country and the soul of their people. The revolution will not be televised!

Book excerpt: Winner of the PEN/Malamud Award, Airships is a “strong, original, tragic and funny” story collection of “the creative Southern tradition” (Alfred Kazin). One of the most revered short story collections of the past fifty years, Airships remains a vital text in the history of the American short story. The award-winning contemporary classic features twenty wildly original, exuberant, often hilarious stories that celebrate the universal peculiarities of the new American South—a land of high school band contests where good old boys from Vicksburg are reunited in Vietnam, and petty nostalgia and the incessant pain of disappointed love prevail in spite of our worst efforts. Hailed by none other than Larry McMurtry as “the best young writer to appear in the South since Flannery O’Connor,” Barry Hannah’s immense storytelling gifts are on striking display in this essential work. “Hannah takes fiction by surprise—scenes, shocks, sounds and amazements: an explosive but meticulous originality.” —Cynthia Ozick

They were simple youths of the interior, knowing only the plenty of the primitive plantation where, undisturbed by labour-saving devices, Nature yielded man her fruits at the price of the sweat of his brow. They were ignorant of machines to the extent that they had never seen a waggon or a wheelbarrow. Horses and oxen bore the burdens of plantation life on their backs, and placid Indian labourers wielded the spade and the hoe. Yet they were thoughtful boys. At this moment they discussed things beyond all that they had seen or heard. "Why not devise a better means of transport than the backs of horses and of oxen?" Luis argued. "Last summer I hitched horses to a barn door, loaded it with sacks of maize, and hauled in one load what ten horses could not have brought on their backs. True, it required seven horses to drag it, while five men had to sit around its edges and hold the load from falling off." "What would you have?" answered Pedro. "Nature demands compensations. You cannot get something from nothing or more from less!" "If we could put rollers under the drag, less pulling power would be needed." "Bah! the force saved would be used up in the labour of shifting the rollers." "The rollers might be attached to the drag at fixed points by means of holes running through their centres," mused Luis. "Or why should not circular blocks of wood be fixed at the four corners of the drag?... Look, Pedro, yonder along the road. What is coming? The very thing I imagined, only better! One horse is pulling it at a good trot!" The first waggon to appear in that region of the interior stopped, and its driver spoke with the boys.

Book My Life in the Sky

Download or read book My Life in the Sky written by Ed Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original purpose of this book of poetry and related essays was to preserve some of my writings for my family and to share them with friends who frequently ask me for copies of my poems. I have always loved poetry, and as I studied and taught literature, I was impressed by the simplicity and depth of meaning in the work of great poets. I was inspired by them and by my teachers to write poetry about real life situations. When I was told by various persons that they liked my poetry because they found the poems to be both personal and universal, I began to consider publishing them. After a friend agreed to design the cover, I made the decision. While working on the manuscript and talking about my project with interested acquaintances, I learned that I am not the only person who keeps a poetry journal. Many who write poetry save their own poems and collect poems from various sources. Since several persons-of different ages-- also expressed a desire to know more about writing poetry, I added to the book, along with journal pages, a section on the fundamentals of writing poetry, citing examples from my own poems. My intent was to keep the instruction simple but comprehensive enough to be helpful. I hope that those who obtain the book will be encouraged to write more poetry and share it with others.

Book excerpt: I am a Pilot by Profession and I am a Writer by Passion. A True Life Story Book contains over seventy thousand words and it took me over six months to write, edit and compile the stories into a book.I have survived death dozens of times. Most of my interviews with death was during my career as a Naval Pilot flying a helicopter mostly over the sea in all weather conditions by day and night for over three long decades. Often I wonder why am I still alive.I wrote this book I named "A True Life Story Book" containing stories starting from my childhood spanning over half a century of memories. There were far too many incidents which developed from almost nothing into a suspense filled thrilling ending. You will never read any of the stories I have written in this book, anywhere else in the world, because these are real incidents from my life which no one else in this world has experienced.Every story in this book has really happened and I have written exactly as it happened. I am the central character in almost all my stories in this book, except a few.The first story in this true life story book is about a small incident which left a mark on my forehead visible even today, fifty years hence and the latest story in my true life story book is about the heart attack I went through during the time I was writing this true life story book and how I survived it, to write that story also in as much detail as humanly possible, in this book. Each of my true life story, is a book on its own. It is possible to read each story independently and without following any sequence. I have written each and every story in this true life story book with the same passion for writing as my first story.A True Life Story Book actually tells my story. It is my Autobiography or an insight into my life and world to you.
