Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1755, an Acadian family is forced to leave Nova Scotia and must relocate in the American colonies in this sweeping historical novel. For years, England and France have fought for control of Nova Scotia, called Acadie by the French settlers. The Acadians, who are of French origin, have remained neutral and live in peace while still remaining loyal to France. But that is all about to change. In 1754, the new English lieutenant-governor orders the Acadians to sign an oath promising to fight with England against France. Eleven-year-old Pierre Martin and his family watch as many of their neighbors relocate to French-controlled lands rather than take the oath. But the Martin family stays put, and its not long before English soldiers burst into their home, search it, and seize their guns. Now, all men and boys aged ten and over are ordered by the English military commander to attend a meeting. Pierre and his father are shocked when they are imprisoned and told they will be deported from their homes. A month later, Pierre and his family must board ships bound for the American colonies. Once in Maryland, the Martins survive eleven years of hardship, hunger, and discrimination. Always holding on to hope, however, they eventually make their way to Louisiana. But after all their losses, can they finally find happiness in this new land? Your story is lively and touching and it will, I hope, foster amongst its readers a feeling of pride towards their Acadian and Cajun heritage and history. Book excerpt: Winner, Evelyn Richardson Award for Non-Fiction and Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing Finalist, Dartmouth Book Award for Non-Fiction, and the Margaret and John Savage Award for Best First Book (Non-fiction) A Hill Times' 100 Best Books in 2020 Selection On Canada's History Bestseller List Growing up on the south shore of Nova Scotia, Tyler LeBlanc wasn't fully aware of his family's Acadian roots -- until a chance encounter with an Acadian historian prompted him to delve into his family history. LeBlanc's discovery that he could trace his family all the way to the time of the Acadian Expulsion and beyond forms the basis of this compelling account of Le Grand Dérangement. Piecing together his family history through archival documents, Tyler LeBlanc tells the story of Joseph LeBlanc (his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather), Joseph's ten siblings, and their families. With descendants scattered across modern-day Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the LeBlancs provide a window into the diverse fates that awaited the Acadians when they were expelled from their homeland. Some escaped the deportation and were able to retreat into the wilderness. Others found their way back to Acadie. But many were exiled to Britain, France, or the future United States, where they faced suspicion and prejudice and struggled to settle into new lives. A unique biographical approach to the history of the Expulsion, Acadian Driftwood is a vivid insight into one family's experience of this traumatic event.

Book Upriver Families

Download or read book Upriver Families written by Leonide L. Martin and published by Made for Success Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ". . . tremendous amount of research . . . very thorough explanation of Louisiana and St Charles Parish history and culture . . . The story of this Acadian to Creole transformation is the genealogy of so many families in Louisiana." -Jay Schexnaydre, President, German-Acadian Coast Historical and Genealogical Society Upriver from New Orleans along the snaking banks of the Mississippi River is an area called the German Coast/Acadian Coast. Acadian ancestors of the Vial-Martin family settled there in the late 1700s. Three women from the family-mother, daughter, cousin-set out on an ancestor quest, inspired by their aunt who lived to 102. The genealogical search reconnected them with relatives living in the upriver parishes, primarily St. John the Baptist and St. Charles, 30 miles north of New Orleans. It led back 14 generations to original French settlers in 1600s Acadia (Nova Scotia). The initial Acadian ancestor was a founder and early governor of Acadia, where French settlers created a unique culture typified by fierce independence, strong family ties, egalitarianism, and simple lifestyle. When the Acadians were forcefully expelled by British conquerors in 1755, this Diaspora scattered them across seas and continents. The exile of politically neutral Acadians is now considered a violation of international law and ethnic cleansing. After journeying for years, some settled in the rich river bottom land along the Mississippi River, where they rebuilt their lives and preserved their culture, eventually becoming Cajuns. The Vial-Martin family has lived for seven generations in upriver parishes. Acadian ancestors intermarried with French and Spanish Creoles and lived through the Louisiana Purchase, statehood, Civil War and aftermath, and two World Wars. Descendants became leaders and major landowners and eventually forgot their Acadian roots. Some family members moved away and lost touch with Louisiana relatives. The ancestor quest undertaken by the authors drew branches of the family back into contact. This lineage quest revealed the family's transition to mainly Creole heritage, a family feud that splintered the Vial and Martin branches, and some curious and notable relatives. Now as the family reconnects, its contemporary members reaffirm their deep and abiding love for place and people with tangled roots and colorful, complex heritage.
