Book Let In But Left Out

Download or read book Let In But Left Out written by Frank Shines and published by FRANK SHINES. This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let in But Left Out argues that fake news can fool people but not a pandemic. Filled with provocative insights, military intrigue and personal stories of tragedy and triumph, the award-winning African American IBM management consultant and former Air Force officer brings you Let in But Left Out: Leadership, Faith & Knowledge in the Age of AI, Coronavirus & Fake News. In Let in But Left Out, author Frank Shines posits that major crises such as a pandemic accelerate technology change and expose societal and leadership weaknesses. Frank grew up in the projects of Oakland, California but went on to earn a Presidential Appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy and served his country for 11 years. Let in but Left Out, is a field guide for adapting to change in a world of coronavirus outbreaks, civil unrest, AI-powered fake news, and national polarization. Frank Shines, who has flown Air Force jets, trained and competed with Olympic athletes and traveled the world advising business leaders and top military brass, brings these true-to-life experiences on adapting to change to the book. Frank teams up with his younger brother, Granison Shines, to take you on a journey which chronicles the initial outbreak of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China and the early warning signs detected by one his family's small businesses that partners with Chinese hi-tech manufacturers in Shenzhen. The brothers analyze the pandemic through the lens of data, bio science, culture change and technology, and provide you with a practical roadmap for surviving and thriving in the age of pandemics and AI-powered "infodemics." The book is divided into three major sections: A Call for Reflection (situational awareness, cognitive bias, faith and spirituality); A Call for Balance (if you let in the virus you must let in the science; if you let in inequality you must let in upward mobility; if you let in tech disruption you must let in people transition); and A Call for Action (get off your butt and act!) In short, the authors ask, has America... Let In VIRTUAL but Left Out REALITY? Let In a CORONAVIRUS but Left Out BIO SCIENCE? Let in DISRUPTION but Left Out TRANSITION? Let In FAKE NEWS but Left Out CRITICAL THINKING? Let In INEQUALITY but Left Out UPWARD MOBILITY? Let In SCREEN TIME but Left Out PEOPLE TIME? Let In PERSONAL GAIN but Left Out COLLECTIVE PURPOSE? Let In DISTRUST & DESPAIR but Left Out FAITH & HOPE? Let In ANGER but Left Out EMPATHY? Let In TECHNOSTRESS but Left Out PSYCHOFLEX (psychological flexibility)? Let In BIO-HACKERS but Left Out BIO-ETHICS? Let In RUNAWAY ALGORITHMS but Left Out ETHICAL GUARDRAILS?

Book excerpt: The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the best-selling books of all time and her tragic story continues to move us more then 70 years after her death. It is the heart-wrenching story of the hopes, dreams and fears of a young Jewish girl hiding in Nazi Germany during World War II. This richly illustrated book uses the Diary as the starting point to explore Anne Frank’s life in Amsterdam and it takes a deep dive into this harrowing narrative, framing the Nazi’s rise to power with the plight of Anne Frank’s family and that of millions of victims of Nazi terror. Book Video Conferencing

Download or read book Video Conferencing written by Axel Volmar and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has reorganized existing methods of exchange, turning comparatively marginal technologies into the new normal. Multipoint videoconferencing in particular has become a favored means for web-based forms of remote communication and collaboration without physical copresence. Taking the recent mainstreaming of videoconferencing as its point of departure, this anthology examines the complex mediality of this new form of social interaction. Connecting theoretical reflection with material case studies, the contributors question practices, politics and aesthetics of videoconferencing and the specific meanings it acquires in different historical, cultural and social contexts.

Book Covid 19 Responses of Local Communities around the World

Download or read book Covid 19 Responses of Local Communities around the World written by Khun Eng Kuah and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-25 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a wide range of international case studies, the contributors to this book study the impact of Covid-19 on the risks faced by communities around the globe. Examining cases from the Americas, Europe and Asia – including Mexico, Brazil, China, India, France, and Belgium – Kuah, Guiheux, Lim and their collaborators look at how communities have coped with the social and economic impacts of the pandemic, as well as the public health concerns. Using a framework of risks, fear, and trust, they evaluate how the global health crisis has both revealed and exacerbated a deep crisis of confidence in institutions and systems around the world. In reaction to this they also look at how individuals, social groups and communities have faced fears and built trust at a more local level. The units of spatial analysis in these cases include urban cities, neighbourhoods, slum settlements, migrant camps, schools, markets and homes, for a broad spectrum of case types and rich empirical data. Essential reading for social scientists including sociologists, anthropologists and scholars of other disciplines looking to understand the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic internationally and on a multi-scalar level.

Book Year Of The Rat

Download or read book Year Of The Rat written by Jorah Kai and published by More Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE YEAR OF THE METAL RAT, 2020, was a time of panic, uncertainty, and great division. CHINA, VIETNAM, CANADA, SAUDI ARABIA, ITALY, ARGENTINA, AMERICA, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, PHILIPPINES, NETHERLANDS, GUATEMALA, UGANDA, THE U.K., SINGAPORE, RUSSIA… As the pandemic spread, some wore masks and socially distanced to protect the vulnerable, while others protested all public health measures as a form of tyranny and caused loud and obnoxious mass disruptions to critical infrastructure in a jarring display of 'personal freedom.' Fake news and echo chambers enabled 'alternative facts,' while unhinged narratives and cartoonish conspiracies ran rampant, often trumping coverage of legitimate and existential converging catastrophes. In YEAR OF THE RAT, the sequel to the international best-seller 'The Invisible War' (Kai's Diary), Jorah Kai documents the world’s largest ‘Zero Covid bubble’ while the outside world handles the pandemic uniquely. Reaching out to friends across the globe, he weaves their stories together. Thirty-six writers from 33 cities in 16 countries share their daily struggles, hopes, and fears for the YEAR OF THE RAT as the SARSCOV2 virus spreads catastrophe to every corner of the globe. "It’s ... the metaphor of the yin and the yang. I’d say right now; we are in the yin. It’s a kind of disaster. It’s sad. And on the yang side... it looks like some sort of a mathematical balance that I cannot explain." - JCVD “I would have done the whole thing for a donut and a tuna fish sandwich. The money meant nothing. It was the opportunity to at least prove to myself that I wasn’t a liar, that I wasn’t living a life of disillusionment. When you think of yourself as being a very creative person, and turn around and realize you’ve been leading a lie.” - Sylvester Stallone (Rocky). "At the beginning of the pandemic, Jorah Kai led a plucky band of frontline workers and activists to fight the pandemic with science. Some called him a harbinger, others a ‘pandemic guru’ as they navigated an increasingly bizarre world of book deals, TV appearances, speaking engagements, and a recovery event with his childhood hero, martial arts movie star Jeanne Claude Van Damme. But nothing could prepare him for what came next..." - The Narrator

Book The Light At The End Of The Covid 19 Tunnel

Download or read book The Light At The End Of The Covid 19 Tunnel written by Gwendolyn S. Corbett and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-12-23 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covid-19 was a tsunami of sudden and major disruption on a global scale. Most people around the world experienced immediate and chaotic change. People stopped moving. The earth had a chance to breathe. Early on, people indicated that "there would be life before Covid-19 and life after Covid-19." Life would NEVER be the same. The swelling and welling up caused extreme and explosive forced action for most of humanity and a reaction from earth. There was no warning really. There's been nothing quite as earth-shocking and shattering for the entire world since World War II. Most humans from World War II are no longer here to share the memories of the abrupt and permanent alteration to lives everywhere. Covid-19 served as a reminder as to how precious all of life is. When this global pandemic wave rushed over earth, the impact was of unique proportions and magnitudes. Due to advanced technology and social media, the effects of Covid-19 and the havoc it wreaked on people's emotions, actions, and lives was readily available for the entire world to witness and respond to, or not. Due to the severe measures implemented in my state, the US, and worldwide, the immediate reaction was extreme fear. Close emotional allies of fear, regardless of spiritual and/or political affiliations, were the emotions of criticism, anger, judgment, division, frustration, suspicions, blame, and hopelessness. Basic freedoms that most people around the globe were typically afforded in normal times became forbidden, taboo, shunned. In most places, hand-shaking, hugging, kissing, and close contact were not allowed. In most places, for extended periods of time, restrictions halted physical contact with those outside of one's immediate family. If you were single or an elderly person in an assisted-care facility, there was a great chance of becoming very lonely. The coronavirus basically locked many people up in what would be a prison cell. While in this "prison cell," individuals were forced to reflect on themselves and on the relationships closest to them, mostly their immediate family, whether they were ready to do this or not. Close evaluation of workplace and extended social relationships took place as well. In the state of Ohio where I reside, towards the end of March 2020, the fear of the impending "coronavirus shutdown" was palpable with the extreme measures and restrictions that would affect personal and workplace lives. As an alternative healer and a very sensitive person, I felt the closing in, the locking of the prison cell door, the extreme fear most people felt. The close allies of fear surrounded me and attempted to draw me into the current of negativity. On March 20, 2020, God gave me a message strong and clear. He said, "Gwen, to make it through this pandemic, you must remain positive and hopeful for yourself, your family, community, humanity, and earth." On March 20, 2020, right before Ohio shut down life as usual, the poems started flowing. The first one was inspired by Proverbs 11:25 NIV, "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." The poems continued to flow through May 8, 2021, two Mother's Day poems to my mom. These poems are to help heal the wounds of Covid-19. They are a gift to humanity and earth. Certain proceeds from this book will aid poor children in rural Appalachia where I grew up in Southeastern Ohio and hopefully well beyond.

Book Notes on Grief

Download or read book Notes on Grief written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the globally acclaimed, best-selling novelist and author of We Should All Be Feminists, a timely and deeply personal account of the loss of her father: “With raw eloquence, Notes on Grief … captures the bewildering messiness of loss in a society that requires serenity, when you’d rather just scream. Grief is impolite ... Adichie’s words put welcome, authentic voice to this most universal of emotions, which is also one of the most universally avoided” (The Washington Post). Notes on Grief is an exquisite work of meditation, remembrance, and hope, written in the wake of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's beloved father’s death in the summer of 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged around the world, and kept Adichie and her family members separated from one another, her father succumbed unexpectedly to complications of kidney failure. Expanding on her original New Yorker piece, Adichie shares how this loss shook her to her core. She writes about being one of the millions of people grieving this year; about the familial and cultural dimensions of grief and also about the loneliness and anger that are unavoidable in it. With signature precision of language, and glittering, devastating detail on the page—and never without touches of rich, honest humor—Adichie weaves together her own experience of her father’s death with threads of his life story, from his remarkable survival during the Biafran war, through a long career as a statistics professor, into the days of the pandemic in which he’d stay connected with his children and grandchildren over video chat from the family home in Abba, Nigeria. In the compact format of We Should All Be Feminists and Dear Ijeawele, Adichie delivers a gem of a book—a book that fundamentally connects us to one another as it probes one of the most universal human experiences. Notes on Grief is a book for this moment—a work readers will treasure and share now more than ever—and yet will prove durable and timeless, an indispensable addition to Adichie's canon.
