Book Harmonizing Latina Visions and Voices

Download or read book Harmonizing Latina Visions and Voices written by Amarilys Estrella and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonizing Latina Visions and Voices: Cultural Explorations ofEntornos discursively challenges the erasures, stigma, and silences imposed on women by functioning as a harmonizing choir, a collection of voices to testify on mujerismo, its vision, and its promise for (our) future. This collection puts “on the record” a pathway toward liberation that pushes back against white supremacist projects unleashed by academia, our families, official narratives of the State, and immigration. This book does not seek to equate the experiences of all Latinas or envision a one-size-fits-all response. We harmonize these diverse voices, understanding that these stories, poems, and essays are invoking different spaces, times, and experiences. We offer them as an intergenerational, intellectual, and spiritual dialogue. As a practice, this work centers and contextualizes how women’s resistance is articulated and expressed. The stories reflected in the chapters that follow are often matricentric, transnational, and queer. Some recurring themes center on the policing, policies, and legislations that govern Latina’s bodies and the entornos (social/environmental worlds) in which they move, are detained, or embodied.

Book excerpt: Brent Spiner’s explosive and hilarious novel is a personal look at the slightly askew relationship between a celebrity and his fans. If the Coen Brothers were to make a Star Trek movie, involving the complexity of fan obsession and sci-fi, this noir comedy might just be the one. Set in 1991, just as Star Trek: The Next Generation has rocketed the cast to global fame, the young and impressionable actor Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, that take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that enlists Paramount Security, the LAPD, and even the FBI in putting a stop to the danger that has his life and career hanging in the balance. Featuring a cast of characters from Patrick Stewart to Levar Burton to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, to some completely imagined, this is the fictional autobiography that takes readers into the life of Brent Spiner, and tells an amazing tale about the trappings of celebrity and the fear he has carried with him his entire life. Fan Fiction is a zany love letter to a world in which we all participate, the phenomenon of “Fandom.”

Book Stories 4 Women

Download or read book Stories 4 Women written by Amy Higgins Artino and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories 4 Women, a collection of true short stories about the 'fairer' sex, was created on an understanding that there is an unspoken solidarity that bonds us as women. However, we four writers felt it appropriate to give a voice to some of the stories unique to the woman's experience, including the ones that seldom are discussed in the open. They range from the somber situations of being the victims of sexual assault and the death of a loved one, to the more whimsical reminiscences about our teenage crushes and childhood tendencies. Think back to how you felt when you started doing things for yourself or when that guy who you thought was "the one" broke your heart. Remember when you took that long walk down the aisle and into your new life, or when you discovered that first stray gray hair sprouting from your head? These short stories go to show that regardless of age, race, political and religious affiliations, and background, we can all relate to the issues of womanhood. Stories 4 Women also shares insights into what enduring these experiences has molded us into: We are thoughtful, seasoned, refreshed, independent, accomplished, nostalgic, forgiving and self-assured women. These are our stories. These are your stories. These are stories for women.

Book Stories Old and New

Download or read book Stories Old and New written by and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories Old and New is the first complete translation of Feng Menglong’s Gujin xiaoshuo (also known as Yushi mingyan, Illustrious Words to Instruct the World), a collection of 40 short stories first published in 1620 in China. This is considered the best of Feng’s three such collections and was a pivotal work in the development of vernacular fiction. The stories are valuable as examples of early fiction and for their detailed depiction of daily life among a broad range of social classes. The stories are populated by scholars and courtesans, spirits and ghosts, Buddhist monks and nuns, pirates and emperors, and officials both virtuous and corrupt. The streets and abodes of late-Ming China come alive in Shuhui Yang and Yunqin Yang’s smooth and colorful translation of these entertaining tales. Stories Old and New has long been popular in China and has been published there in numerous editions. Although some of the stories have appeared in English translations in journals and anthologies, they have not previously been presented sequentially in thematic pairs as arranged by Feng Menglong. This unabridged translation, illustrated with a selection of woodcuts from the original Ming dynasty edition and including Feng’s interlinear notes and marginal comments, as well as all of the verse woven throughout the text, allows the modern reader to experience the text as did its first audience nearly four centuries ago.
