Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Malawi written by Owen J. M. Kalinga and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi, established as the British protectorate of Nyasaland in 1891, gained its independence in 1964 and moved immediately into three decades of one-party rule. Since the mid-1990s, however, the country has held multi-party elections, as directed by its constitution, and President Bingu wa Mutharika is currently serving his second term. The fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of Malawi, now newly expanded and updated, covers a wide range of areas in Malawi history, including the rise and fall of state systems, religious and socio-political movements, the economy, environment, transportation, war, disease, and natural sciences. Author Owen J. M. Kalinga charts developments from pre-history to the post-Banda Malawi, from Tom Bokwito to James Sangala, and from the UMCA mission at Magomero to the second term of Bingu wa Mutharika's presidency, paying particular attention to the individuals, groups, communities, and forces that have molded this South African country. The dictionary itself contains over 1,000 cross-referenced entries on crucial aspects of Malawi history, and it is the most extensive single-volume reference work on Malawi available. In addition to the dictionary entries, Kalinga provides a chronology containing important dates and events and an informative bibliographical section organized by subject. The final part of the bibliography gives the reader a list of current and obsolete newspapers and periodicals related to Malawi, an ideal resource for further research. This newly updated edition is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Malawi.

Download or read book Refugees Environment and Development written by Richard Black and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refugees, Environment and Development is concerned with the complex interrelationships between forced migration, natural resource management and 'sustainable development'. The book challenges the growing rhetoric that refugees 'cause' environmental degradation, and that environmental decline is promoting a new wave of 'environmental refugees'. Drawing on examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as detailed case studies of the Rwandan emergency of 1994-96, and lesser known refugee movements to Guinea and Senegal in West Africa, the book argues against a neo-Malthusian view of the relationship between population, environment and migration. The author explores alternative approaches to the dynamic processes of social and environmental change in refugee situations. This is an ideal text for undergraduate and postgraduate students concerned with environment, development and migration studies, as well as policy-makers and practitioners in the field.
Download or read book Socio Ecological Resilience to Climate Change in a Fragile Ecosystem written by Sosten Chiotha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lake Chilwa Basin Climate Change Adaptation Programme was a seven-year research and development programme in Malawi that concluded in March 2017. The programme was designed to protect the livelihoods of the population and enhance resilience of the natural resource base upon which it depends. The Lake Chilwa Basin is an important wetland ecosystem which is a designated Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Wetland Convention and a Man and Biosphere Reserve designated by UNESCO. This book provides a review of the research and programme interventions done based on the ecosystem approach (EA), a strategy for the integrated management of land, water and living resources. This is designed to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in an equitable way in its implementation of mitigation and climate change adaptation interventions. It is shown how: local and district institutions were strengthened to better manage natural resources and build resilience to climate change; cross-basin and cross-sector natural resource management and planning for climate change throughout the Basin were built; household and enterprise adaptive capacity in Basin hotspots was built; and improved forest management and governance contributed in mitigating the effects of climate change. The study followed all the twelve key EA principles with involvement of all key stakeholders. It is one of the first programmes to apply EA on such a wide temporal and spatial scale and provides key lessons to be learned for the protection of other fragile ecosystems in an era of climate change.
Download or read book Please Take Photographs written by Sindiwe Magona and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sindiwe Magona's poems conspire with her. Even years after being written, they still seem warm from her lips, and it is this residue of her telling them that draws you into their confidence. From the languid innocence of the poems about her village, to her shattering images of Africa at war, Magona leads you headlong into her fireside circle where archetypes flicker like shadows on a face that has seen, and been. Please, Take Photographs is defiant and tender, horrific and homely, at once irreverent, outspoken and beautiful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly sympathetic and deeply personal account of Malawi's experience of colonialism has particular poignancy as it is written from the marginal perspective of a mixed-race child in a race-conscious society. The author also has a keen eye for the Scottish dimension in Malawi's story. Historically revealing, politically provocative, and humanly intriguing, this book will be a rewarding read for anyone seeking a better understanding of the people who made Malawi the country it is today.

Book excerpt: The application of artificial intelligence in networks and systems is a rapidly evolving field that has the potential to transform a wide range of industries. The refereed proceedings in this book is from the Artificial Intelligence Application in Networks and Systems session of the Computer Science Online Conference 2023 (CSOC 2023), which was held online in April 2023. The section brings together experts from different fields to present their research and discuss the latest trends and challenges. One of the key themes in this section is the development of intelligent systems that can learn, adapt, and optimize their performance in real time. Researchers are exploring how AI algorithms can be used to create autonomous networks and systems that can make decisions without human intervention. Furthermore, this section highlights the use of AI in improving network performance and efficiency. Researchers are exploring how AI algorithms can be used to optimize network routing, reduce congestion, and improve the quality of service. These efforts can help organizations save costs and improve user experience.
