Book Studying Peoples in the People s Democracies

Download or read book Studying Peoples in the People s Democracies written by Vintilă Mihăilescu and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2008 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bulgaria and Serbia during socialism are outlined from many different points of view in this volume. Beyond local and personal trajectories the authors illuminate more general and comparative questions. Was there anything like a "socialist anthropology", common to all three countries? Did Soviet and/or Marxist influences, in the discipline and in society in general, penetrate so deeply as to form an unavoidable common denominator of anthropological practice? The answers turn out to be complex and subtle. While unifying ideological forces were very strong in the 1950s, diversity increased thereafter. Anthropology was entangled with national ideology in all three countries, but the evidence nonetheless calls for "polyphonic" interpretations.

Book Europe s Environment

Download or read book Europe s Environment written by European Environment Agency and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third review in the series of reports on the state of the environment throughout the European continent, which also provides an assessment of how the main economic driving forces put pressure on the environment and identifies key areas where further action is needed. It was prepared for the meeting of European environmental ministers held under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Europe in Ukraine in May 2003. For the first time, this review covers the entire Russian Federation and the 11 other Eastern European, Caucasus and Central Asian (EECCA) states. Chapters consider: developments in socio-economic sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, transport and tourism; prominent environmental problems such as climate change, ozone depletion, air pollution and soil degradation; cross-cutting issues of biological diversity and human health impacts; and policy management aspects.

Book Dying and Death in 18th 21st Century Europe

Download or read book Dying and Death in 18th 21st Century Europe written by Marius Rotar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features a selection of the most representative papers presented during the international conference Dying and Death in 18th-21st Century Europe (ABDD). It invites you on a fascinating journey across the last three centuries of Europe, with death as your guide. The past and present realities of the complex phenomena of death and dying in Romania, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Serbia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Italy are dealt with, by authors from varying backgrounds: historians, sociologists, priests, humanists, anthropologists, and doctors. This is yet more proof that death as a topic cannot be confined to one science, the deciphering of its meanings and of the shifts it effects requiring a joint, interdisciplinary effort.

Book Global Trends in Museum Diplomacy

Download or read book Global Trends in Museum Diplomacy written by Natalia Grincheva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Trends in Museum Diplomacy traces the transformation of museums from publicly or privately funded heritage institutions into active players in the economic sector of culture. Exploring how this transformation reconfigured cultural diplomacy, the book argues that museums have become autonomous diplomatic players on the world stage. The book offers a comparative analysis across a range of case studies in order to demonstrate that museums have gone global in the era of neoliberal globalisation. Grincheva focuses first on the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which is well known for its bold revolutionising strategies of global expansion: museum franchising and global corporatisation. The book then goes on to explore how these strategies were adopted across museums around the world and analyses two cases of post-Guggenheim developments in China and Russia: the K11 Art Mall in Hong Kong and the International Network of Foundations of the State Hermitage Museum in Russia. These cases from more authoritarian political regimes evidence the emergence of alternative avenues of museum diplomacy that no longer depend on government commissions to serve immediate geo-political interests. Global Trends in Museum Diplomacy will be a valuable resource for students, scholars and practitioners of contemporary museology and cultural diplomacy. Documenting new developments in museum diplomacy, the book will be particularly interesting to museum and heritage practitioners and policymakers involved in international exchanges or official programs of cultural diplomacy.
