Book excerpt: Many parents fear the time when their beautiful happy children will become unmanageable adolescents continually engaging in risky or destructive behaviour. Unfortunately, this view of adolescents is the focus of the media, even though it relates to just a small proportion of young people. As the large amount of research we report shows, most adolescents are responsible young people who care about their families and crave the support of their parents. It is also true, however, as much research indicates, that the quality of the relationship parents have with their adolescents is crucial to the wellbeing of those young people. We discuss the need for parents to set reasonable limits on their adolescents and to expect appropriate behavior. We also show, on the basis of research, that children who have experienced positive, caring relationships with their parents are more likely than other adolescents to behave responsibly. In other words, behavior in adolescence does not ‘come out of nowhere’ but builds on earlier experiences in the family. Because of the large amount of research reported in this volume, we expect that it will be useful to practitioners from a range of professions that are likely to focus on adolescents: social workers, youth leaders, welfare workers, religious leaders, psychologists and psychiatrists and contribute to a better understanding of young people and their development, and the importance of families to that development.

From a systemic perspective there are many influences which could be accounting for this association, one key area being the parent-adolescent relationship. Parent-adolescent relationships have independently been associated with educational attainment as well as physical and mental health outcomes. The prospective study, the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort (n = 8,984; 52% white, 26% Black, 21% Hispanic 1% mixed race) was used to estimate the connections between parent-adolescent relationship quality in 1997, mental health in 2000, and physical health in 2009 and overall educational attainment. Results from path models suggested that the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship was a significant positive predictor of educational attainment and health. Findings provide an important perspective to understand how relationships may affect mental health, education and physical health over time. This information will inform researchers, clinicians, educators, and healthcare professionals in prioritizing and further understanding the importance of parent-child relationships, and how these variables influence long-term outcomes into adulthood.

Book excerpt: This research measured the perceived change in communication and closeness between adolescents and their parents after four weeks in an adolescent residential chemical dependency treatment program. Each of the adolescents was involved in an adolescent residential chemical dependency treatment program and met diagnostic criteria for substance dependence prior to admittance into the treatment program. The adolescents participated in this research study by completing questionnaires before and after the treatment program. Before the treatment program, the adolescents completed questionnaires measuring their perception of their parent-adolescent communication, parent-adolescent closeness, a demographic questionnaire, and an open-ended question. During the second testing, four weeks later after the treatment program, the adolescents again completed the questionnaires measuring parent-adolescent communication and closeness and the open-ended question along with a questionnaire measuring the perceived changes in the quality of their parent-adolescent relationship after four weeks of treatment. Paired sample t-tests were used to compare pre-test responses to post-test responses. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare mean scores for those who completed the post-test with those who did not complete the post-test and to compare pre-test and post-test mean scores of the participants who completed the post-test based on their parents' attendance in the weekly multi-family therapy group. Although there was a significant loss of participants from the pre-test to the post-test, much of the data indicated a positive change after four weeks. When comparing the pre-test responses to post-test responses, significant changes were reported based on the parents attendance in the weekly multi-family therapy group. By gathering information about the changes within the parent-adolescent relationship, researchers, therapists, and social service workers will better understand the substance dependent adolescent population and their families. Additionally, areas of treatment programs that are not effective may be altered and funding sources will recognize the importance of family therapy and place more emphasis on funding family therapy within chemical dependency treatment.
