Book Doing Family in Second Generation British Migration Literature

Download or read book Doing Family in Second Generation British Migration Literature written by Corinna Assmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the large-scale global transformations of the 20th century, migration literature has become a vibrant genre over the last decades. In these novels, issues of transcultural identity and belonging naturally feature prominently. This study takes a closer look at the ways in which the idea of family informs processes of identity construction. It explores changing roles and meanings of the diasporic family as well as intergenerational family relations in a migration setting in order to identify the specific challenges, problems, and possibilities that arise in this context. This book builds on insights from different fields of family research (e.g. sociology, psychology, communication studies, memory studies) to provide a conceptual framework for the investigation of synchronic and diachronic family constellations and connections. The approach developed in this study not only sheds new light on contemporary British migration literature but can also prove fruitful for analyses of families in literature more generally. By highlighting the relevance and multifaceted nature of doing family, this study also offers new perspectives for transcultural memory studies.

Book The Collected Works of E F Benson

Download or read book The Collected Works of E F Benson written by E. F. Benson and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 4979 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Frederic Benson (1867–1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories. I can’t forget the youthful squeals of pleasure as she panted out my name. I can’t forget how she made me feel like a hero instead of dangerous man. My sweet, innocent Blossom. Then she was taken from me. Anger fuelled me, and I became even more deadly. Years have passed, and I’ve moved on with my work. Keeping the world safer by killing those who seek to harm the innocent. A vigilante. But instead of finding her, she’s found me. And with her comes a child with my blood pumping through her veins. Just one more deadly game. Then she’ll be mine. Then we’ll be a family.
