This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mutiny Memoirs, Being Personal Reminiscences of the Great Sepoy Revolt of 1857 The reminiscences contained in the following pages were originally published in the columns of the Pioneer; and it is with the kind permission of the Editor of that Journal that I am enabled to reissue them in the form of this little book. They do not pretend to any merit but that of truth. In that respect they may claim to present a record of actual events, and thus to bring before the Reader, however imperfectly, a rough sketch of the great Indian Mutiny such as it appeared to the eyes of a young Subaltern Officer of Native Cavalry, who had the good fortune to be engaged in its suppression. I am indebted to the courtesy of the eminent Photographic Artists, Messrs. Bourne and Shepherd, for permission to copy the beautiful pictures which illustrate the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Great Mutiny, 1857-59: Including the Relief, Siege, and Capture of Lucknow, and the Campaigns in Rohilcund and Oude These Reminiscences are submitted to the public in the trust that they will be welcomed alike by soldier and civilian. They are recorded by one who was himself an actor in the scenes which he describes, and who viewed them from a novel and most unusual position for a military historian - the ranks. They have been carefully perused by an officer who was present at many of the operations mentioned; and considerable pains have been taken to verify, wherever possible, those incidents of which he was not personally cognisant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sepoy Revolt: Its Causes Its Consequences Were my book to be written over again, I should like to deepen the colours in which some pictures of Indian life have been painted but the experience which enables a man to write on the subject of Eastern government, tends to blunt his sympathies, and in some degree to injure his moral sense. Torture and lawlessness, and the perpetual suffering of millions, are so familiar to me, that I am conscious of not feeling as I ought to do when wrong is done to individuals and nations. The man who lives in the vicinity of the undertaker and boiler-maker, is not likely to join in the agitation against barrel-organs and street cries. Book excerpt: "Mutiny Memoirs" by A. R. D. Mackenzie is a book that reveals a rough sketch of the great Indian Mutiny such as it appeared to the eyes of a young Subaltern Officer of Native Cavalry, who had the good fortune to be engaged in its suppression. Excerpt: *In jotting down the reminiscences and sketches contained in the following pages, my aim is to record simply and truthfully certain episodes of a stirring period of Indian military history. Englishmen can never cease to be interested in the story of the great Sepoy Mutiny, and I trust that even so modest a contribution as mine to the narrative of some of its details may not be considered superfluous. Often have I been urged to give the semi-permanence of printer's ink to some story told over the walnuts and the wine"

This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's First war for Independence (aka Indian Rebellion of 1857) began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the cantonment of the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to East India Company power in that region, and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also known as India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Rebellion, the Indian Mutiny, the Revolt of 1857, the Rebellion of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion and the Sepoy Mutiny. The rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. The country was thereafter directly governed by the crown as the new British Raj. The 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot was a Line Infantry Regiment of the British Army from 1799 to 1881.
