Download or read book A Wanderer Plays on Muted Strings written by Knut Hamsun and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wanderer Plays on Muted Strings Knut Hamsun Related to and sometimes paired with Hamsun's Under the Autumn Stars, this beautifully lyric fiction picks up with the same characters as the other book, but is set in time six years later. The central character of the former novel, Knut Pedersen (Hamsun's real name), is more an observer in this work. His former friend Grindhusen has grown from stubborn independence to a shifty and vacillating man; and his companion Lars Falkenberg has dwindled into a small land-holder with a perpetually pregnant wife from whom he is deeply estranged. These two comedians play out a tragi-comedy that is painful through the very irony and humaneness with which Hamsun paints his figures. Book excerpt: Most of the extended instrumental playing techniques, as well as electroacoustic music in general, are still deprived of a conventional method of notation. Download or read book Richard Strauss written by Derrick Puffett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this handbook bring together a full-length study of Elektra in English. The volume examines the many facets of one of Richard Strauss's most complex operas. First, P. E. Easterling surveys the mythological background, while Karen Forsyth discusses Hofmannsthal's adaptation of his sources. The second part brings the music to the fore. Derrick Puffett offers an introductory essay and synopsis; Arnold Whittall considers the tonal and dramatic structure of the composition; Tethys Carpenter explores the musical language of the work in detail, with special focus given to part of the Klytaemnestra scene. The third part of the volume offers two contrasting critical essays: Carolyn Abbate provides an interpretation informed by her recent work on narrative, and Robin Holloway analyses Strauss's orchestration of the opera. The book also contains a discography and an appendix of excerpts from the Strauss-Hofmannsthal correspondence.

Download or read book The Symphony in Australia 1960 2020 written by Rhoderick McNeill and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symphony remained a major orchestral form in Australia between 1960 and 2020, with a body of diverse and interesting symphonies produced during the 1960s and 1970s that defied the widespread modernist trends of serialism, electronic music and indeterminism that seemed harbingers of the symphony’s demise. From the late 1970s onwards, many Australian composers chose to work in styles that admitted modal and tonal melodic and harmonic elements with regular pulse. Major cycles of symphonies by Carl Vine, Brenton Broadstock and Ross Edwards began to appear in the late 1980s. Other prolific symphonists like Paul Paviour (10 symphonies), David Morgan (15 symphonies), Philip Bracanin (11), Peter Tahourdin (5), John Polglase (5) and many others demonstrated a revived interest in the form. This trend continued into the first two decades of the present century with symphonies by Matthew Hindson, Katy Abbott, Stuart Greenbaum, Andrew Schultz, Mark Isaacs and Gordon Kerry. This renewed interest in the symphony reflects similar trends in Britain and the United States. Rhoderick McNeill provides a comprehensive introduction to this large body of music with the aim of making the music and its composers known to concert- goers, music educators and students, conductors and music entrepreneurs.
