The composer is noteworthy and controversial because of his radical early works, his interest in non-Western musics, and his retrogressive mature style—along with notoriety for his imprisonment in San Quentin on a morals charge. Book Three Long Poems in Athens

  • Author : Konstantina Georganta
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2019-01-15
  • ISBN : 1527525457
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Three Long Poems in Athens written by Konstantina Georganta and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athens is an emblematic city, a place of significance. It is memory embodied in a multi-layered topos, a place of ruins with the Parthenon as its headpiece. The routes one may follow in the city are numerous and the story one may narrate changes with each turn one takes. This book acknowledges this and offers the option of the poetic word creating narratives that travel through the city of today but also cut into the city’s past touching on various of its corners and opening up to the reader the city’s microcosm yesterday and today. Through this itinerary, the city becomes emblematic of the macrocosm surrounding both this city and others like it. This book includes the first translation of three Modern Greek poems into English, creating a thread linking the 1980s to 2010s. The reader is led from Kaisarianē, the corner of Patēsiōn-Stournara, Athēnas street, Concordia Square and Monastēraki (Ēlias Lagios, Erēmē Gē, 1984), to the old harbor and refugee suburb of Perama 14.7km from the centre of Athens (Andreas Pagoulatos, Perama, 2006), on to Psyrrē, Exarchia, Agioi Anargyroi and Kypselē and finally into all the bins of Athens (George Prevedourakis, Kleftiko, 2013). Critical texts accompanying the poems urge the reader to view the poems as historical meta-texts, city narratives and depictions of the ‘meta-hellenic’, active political texts offering valuable insights into today no matter from how many years afar.

Book Who Travels with the Doctor

Download or read book Who Travels with the Doctor written by Gillian I. Leitch and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the long-running BBC series Doctor Who, the Doctor has rarely been alone--his companions are essential. Male or (mostly) female, alien or (mostly) human, young or old (none as old as he), the dozens of companions who have travelled with him over the past 50 years have served as sympathetic proxies for the audience. Through their adventures the companions are perfected, facing danger and thus discovering their strengths and weaknesses. Yet they all pay a price, losing their innocence and sometimes their lives. This collection of new essays examines the role of the companion as an intermediate between viewers and the Doctor. The contributors discuss who travels with the Doctor and why, how they interact, how the companions influence the narrative and how their journeys change them.

Download or read book The Saxophone Winter written by Robert Harlow and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-10-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Saxophone Winter´s long white season is the winter of 1938-39, when The Great Depression has exhausted the people who have lived through it and Hitler´s war, seen on the horizon, appears as salvation from its grip. It is at this moment in the history of his small hometown that Christopher Waterton gets a chance to try to dream his own dreams, but at the same time he must also deal with the distresses and machinations of both his elders and his contemporaries. This is a serious time. In a review of the book, Louis K. MacKendrick says, "[These] teenagers, the bulk of [the story´s] cast, are not fumbling, inarticulate, embarrassing gawks; they are sensible, intelligent individuals, with range, depth and substance. They are not miniaturized adults, not children, but simply, believably, teenagers of their time, and the entirety of their lives is both understood and shown in the round. Sensation, not sensationalism." But fourteen-year-old Christopher is not enclosed in a teenage world. He becomes embroiled with, and must try to understand, what is happening around him among his teachers and other adults who are powerful in Long River (pop 4000). He quite suddenly falls in love (for the first time), and Emily falls in love with him. They flaunt it, and there are repercussions. Two love-starved teachers, trapped in a Calvinist profession, become mean. Christopher´s best friend, Fielder, feels left out; and this culminates in him devising a punishment with unforeseen repercussions. Both Emily´s parents and Christopher´s own are concerned with the intensity of their children´s devotion. When they are discovered to have "necked" in a hammock at a party at Emily´s place, they are forbidden to see each other. They get around this injunction easily - with the help of Emily´s very independent grandmother. But then there is the moment when Emily signals that she is ready "to go all the way." Suddenly, Christopher is being asked to go too far too fast. When he is gifted with a saxophone at Christmas, Christopher´s life expands. If Emily is one kind of dream that appears to be coming true, the saxophone is another. The lessons he takes from Gabe, who plays saxophone in a local band, are not all about music. Gabe is living through the sad hell of a shotgun marriage. And Christopher´s other good friend, Purvis, is seventeen and an outcast from his family. When Christopher introduces him to his young English teacher, Miss Lee, the story begins its run toward its climax. Christopher´s father is General Foreman at Long River´s Public Works Yard and is also the chair of the school board. When the high school is gutted by a fire, he awards the contract to refurbish the building to a contractor not approved by the town´s mayor, who is accustomed to rewarding his friends and supporters. Later, he defends Miss Lee, who may or may not have been intimate with Purvis, and the mayor takes his revenge. So, too does the winter itself. "As much as anything," Patricia Bradbury writes , The Saxophone Winter is a tender love story between the author and the process of adolescent awakening. It can be argued that such territory is one of the writer´s toughest grounds. Such clarity of recall - for the experience of first love (so beautifully evoked here) -requires a masterful hand." The Saxophone Winter, Robert Harlow´s seventh novel, is good read for anyone from twelve to eighty and beyond.

Book European Poems Transitions

Download or read book European Poems Transitions written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1988 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems on European themes by the author of Her (his Paris novel) and the enduring A Coney Island of the Mind were mostly written during the last seven years and, in the poet's words, are "transformations and transitions looking westward to America and beyond." Flowing from France to Italy to the Netherlands, on to Germany, back to France, and finally toward America, they follow Ferlinghetti's own recent journeying. The poems progress geographically and chronologically with a cohesive development of ideas and themes. In part he plays off T. S. Eliot's "summarizing the past by theft and allusion" but captures the present as well in fleeting incidents of daily experience, and, in his powerful concluding poem "History of the World: A TV Docu-drama," envisions a possible nuclear future. It is a view of our time and of where we are in it, seen by an eagle eye, told in Ferlinghetti's inimitable everyman's voice.
