Download or read book Superficial Esophageal Neoplasm written by M. Imamura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, containing the proceedings of the 2000 Kyoto Symposium on Esophageal Cancer, is an important contribution for all types of physicians interested in both squamous and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. The volume has great legitimacy and relevance. The symposia hosted by Professor Masayuki Imamura brought together the leaders in several disciplines from Japan with other acknowledged authorities from Europe, the United States, Australia, and other parts of Asia. Japan has long been a leader in making advances in understanding the pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, for several decades originally led by Professor Komei Nakayama and his students. It is now clear that Japanese are also beginning to suffer from esophageal adenocarcinoma and Barrett's columnar lined epithelium, thus enabling the Japanese to formulate studies on the pathology, diagnosis, and treatment for the full spectrum of esophageal neoplasms. The authoritativeness of these proceedings is established not only by the long tradi tion of Japanese leadership in the field but by the contributions of the principal leaders from the Nakayama school participating in the honorary faculty and local scientific committee.

Download or read book Gastrointestinal Oncology written by A. B. Benson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastrointestinal tract malignancies encompass a spectrum of diseases with marked differences in etiology, incidence, biological behavior, and treatment outcome. The incidence of new gastrointestinal cases recorded yearly for patients residing in the United States is approximately 230,000, representing nearly 20% of all cancer cases. Worldwide, gastrointestinal malignancies are responsible for the largest number of cancer deaths, particularly because of the high incidence of hepatocellular and gastric cancer in other countries. Gastrointestinal Oncology is directed to those most involved in the multidisciplinary approach to the gastrointestinal cancer patient, including medical, radiation and surgical oncologists; gastroenterologists; interventional radiologists; pathologists; oncology nurses; and oncology physicians-in-training.
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Gastrointestinal Oncology written by David Kelsen and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2008 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly updated for its Second Edition, this text provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary coverage of gastrointestinal cancer, including molecular biology, diagnosis, medical, surgical, and radiation therapy, and palliative care. The initial section, Principles of Gastrointestinal Oncology, includes an expanded radiation oncology chapter, an extensively revised cancer genetics chapter, and a completely rewritten medical oncology chapter emphasizing new agents. Subsequent sections focus on esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, hepatocellular, biliary tree, and colorectal cancer. Coverage of each anatomic site includes epidemiology, screening, and prevention; molecular biology and genetics; pathology; anatomy and staging; and clinical management. The final section on uncommon cancers includes new chapters on neuroendocrine tumors and small bowel cancers. A companion Website provides instant access to the complete, fully searchable text.

Download or read book Prognostic and Predictive Value of P53 written by Jan G. M. Klijn and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1997 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. This first volume in the series, European School of Oncology Scientific Updates, deals with one of the most important genes in the molecular genetics of human cancer: p53.This cellular protein was discovered in 1979 by a number of investigators independently and alterations of p53 or its product are observed in about half of all cancers. In the early 1980s, several laboratories initially demonstrated dominant oncogenic activities of the gene. Then, in 1989, p53 was recognised as a classic tumour suppressor gene based on the results of various studies by different research groups.Since the detection of the gene and its product, various important functions have been described. The gene appears to be involved in cell cycle control, DNA repair, apoptosis, cellular differentiation, senescence and angiogenesis. In view of the rapidly increasing importance of p53, a Task Force Meeting was organised by the European School of Oncology

Download or read book Molecular Pathology of Gastroenterological Cancer written by Eiichi Tahara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years have passed since I became a professor in the First Department of Pathology, Hiroshima University School of Medicine. It is my great pleas ure that Molecular Pathology o[ Gastroenterological Cancer-Application to Clinical Practice has been published by Springer-Verlag Tokyo to commemo rate the 20th anniversary of my professorship. Seeing the academic achievements of our department during these 20 years, I am confident that we could establish a department of oncology to research the pathogenesis of human cancer through systemic application of a variety of molecular techniques. We have demonstrated that the develop me nt and progression of esophageal, gastric, and colon cancer require mul tiple alterations affecting DNA mismatch repair genes, oncogenes, and tumorsuppressor genes, and that common and uncommon genetic changes exist for esophageal, gastric, and colorectal carcinomas. In addition to these genetic changes, the majority of gastrointestinal cancers express telomerase activity, with overexpression of telomerase RNA, indicating a powerful addi tional tool for early detection of gastrointestinal cancer. By transferring these basic observations to the clinic, we now are able to make accurate cancer diagnoses, thus determing the grade of malignancy and patient prognosis. We also can identify patients at high risk for developing cancer and create new therapeutic approaches. In fact, we have routinely implemented a new molecular diagnosis strategy at the Hiroshima City Medi cal Association Clinical Laboratory since August 1993.

Download or read book Head and Neck Cancer written by Jochen A. Werner and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1996 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the rapidly evolving area of head and neck cancer research it is difficult to maintain a detailed survey on the many aspects of the field. The book presents a comprehensive yet specific survey of the vast area offering latest results in the different fields from basic research methods, tumorigenesis, diagnosis, and treatment thus giving a survey of the vast field that is hardly to be gained from single publications. The information offered is presented in an easy to access manner covering different aspects in the field of head and neck cancer research that allows searching for details while also giving and overview of the total field. The book is primarily directed at scientists engaged in cancer research not only of the head and neck but also of other areas of cancer research because of the specific coverage of research methods and tumorigenesis. Furthermore the book is of high value for clinicians wishing an easy access to latest results in the field of head and neck cancer and its implications on diagnosis and treatment.
