Book excerpt: Visit Armand Marie Leroi on the web: http://armandleroi.com/index.html Stepping effortlessly from myth to cutting-edge science, Mutants gives a brilliant narrative account of our genetic code and the captivating people whose bodies have revealed it—a French convent girl who found herself changing sex at puberty; children who, echoing Homer’s Cyclops, are born with a single eye in the middle of their foreheads; a village of long-lived Croatian dwarves; one family, whose bodies were entirely covered with hair, was kept at the Burmese royal court for four generations and gave Darwin one of his keenest insights into heredity. This elegant, humane, and engaging book “captures what we know of the development of what makes us human” (Nature).

Book Application of Mutation Breeding Methods in the Improvement of vegetatively propagated crops V2

Download or read book Application of Mutation Breeding Methods in the Improvement of vegetatively propagated crops V2 written by C. Broertjes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application of Mutation Breeding Methods in the Improvement of Vegetatively Propagated Crops: An Interpretive Literature Review summarizes advances in the use of artificially induced mutations to improve cultivated plants, particularly those that are vegetatively propagated. It brings together all available and accessible references that examine the advantages, drawbacks, and possibilities of the mutation breeding method, as well as the challenges that prevent it from being applied to various crops. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of various aspects of mutagenic treatment using chemical and physical mutagens. It then discusses the structure and functioning of shoot apices and their behavior after irradiation; adventitious bud techniques and other in vivo or in vitro methods of asexual propagation; and breeding of root and tuber crops, such as cassava and potato, ornamental crops such as foliage plants and cut flowers, fruit crops, and other crops. Plant breeders who want to better understand how to apply mutation breeding to their crops will find this book extremely helpful.

Download or read book Membrane Physiology written by T.E. Andreoli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Membrane Physiology is a soft-cover book containing portions of Physiology of Membrane Disorders, published in larger, hard-cover form in 1978. The parent volume was divided into five parts, described in detail in the Preface to the hard-cover edition, which is reproduced in this volume. The present version of Membrane Physiology incorporates the first three of these parts, including a section on the Nature of Biological Membranes, a section on Methods for Studying Membranes, and a section on General Problems in Membrane Biology. It is the hope of the Editors that this smaller volume will be of value to individuals interested in general physiology, the methods for studying general physiology, and its potential application to problems of clinical and physiological relevance. The Preface to Physiology of Membrane Disorders indicates our general reasoning for developing such a volume. THOMAS E. ANDREOLI JOSEPH F. HOFFMAN DARRELL D. FANESTIL Vll Preface to Physiology of Membrane Disorders The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a rational frame of reference for assessing the pathophysiology of those disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes are a major factor responsible for the clinical manifestations of disease.

Book The Genetic Basis of Common Diseases

Download or read book The Genetic Basis of Common Diseases written by Richard A. King and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-17 with total page 1091 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this highly acclaimed text was published in 1992, much new knowledge has been gained about the role of genetic factors in common adult diseases, and we now have a better understanding of the molecular processes involved in genetic susceptibility and diseases mechanisms. The second edition fully incorporates these advances. The entire book has been updated and twelve new chapters have been added. Most of these chapters deal with diseases such as gallstones, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, skin cancer, other common skin diseases, prostate cancer and migraine headaches that are seen by all physicians. Others address the genetic and molecular basis of spondylarthropathies, lupus, hemochromatosis, IgA deficiency, mental retardation, hearing loss, and the role of mitochondrial variation in adult diseases. Chapters on the evolution of human genetic disease and on animal models add important background on the omplexities of these diseases. Unique clinical applications of genetics to common diseases are covered in the additional new chapters on genetic counseling, pharmacogenetics, and the genetic consequences of modern therapeutics.

Book Regulation of Membrane Na K ATPase

Download or read book Regulation of Membrane Na K ATPase written by Sajal Chakraborti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Na+-K+ ATPase or Na-pump ATPase, a member of “P”-type ATPase superfamily, is characterized by association of multiple isoforms mainly of it’s α- and β- subunits. At present four different α- (α-1,α-2,α-3 and α-4) and three β- (β-1, β-2, and β-3) isoforms have been identified in mammalian cells and their differential expressions are tissue specific. Regulation of Na+-K+ ATPase activity is an important but a complex process, which involves short-term and long-term mechanisms. Short-term regulation of Na+-K+ ATPase is either mediated by changes in intracellular Na+ concentrations that directly affect the Na+-pump activity or by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation-mediated by some stimulants leading to changes in its expression and transport properties. On the other hand, long-term regulation of Na+-K+ ATPase is mediated by hormones, such as mineralocorticoids and thyroid hormones, which cause changes in the transcription of genes of α- and β- subunits leading to an increased expression in the level of Na+-pump. Several studies have revealed a relatively new type of regulation that involves the association of small, single span membrane proteins with this enzyme. These proteins belong to the FXYD family, the members of which share a common signature sequence encompassing the transmembra ne domain adjacent to the isoform(s) of α-β subunits of Na+-K+ ATPase. Considering the extraordinary importance of Na+-K+ ATPase in cellular function, several internationally established investigators have contributed their articles in the monograph entitled “Regulation of Membrane Na+-K+ ATPase” for inspiring young scientists and graduate students to enrich their knowledge on the enzyme, and we are sure that this book will soon be considered as a comprehensive scientific literature in the area of Na+-K+ ATPase regulation in health and disease.

Book excerpt: Have you ever been playing a game, watching a movie, or reading a book and noticed something that reminded you of your walk with Christ? Substrate Kingdom is a collection of articles with five unreleased chapters that will help you examine how the stories you love intersect with your faith. While the intention to illustrate biblical truth may not have been there when it was written, as God's creations we will inevitably touch on the truth we see in the Bible through the stories we tell. He made the world we live in after all. Now we get to have the fun of finding those connections, learning from them, and applying them to our relationship with our Creator. Before reading this you might not have known the Christian traits of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, how we communicate with God and how the Triforce from Zelda relates, or which characters from across the geek universe exhibit the Fruits of the Spirit. Lessons from many franchises are contained within these pages, so you're sure to find biblical truths in some stories you love.
