Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutable Passions brings Charlotte Brontë to life in a way that you might not have seen her before. Charlotte Brontë’s life was empty; she suffered from extreme loneliness, ill health and sleepless nights. Her siblings were dead, and living in the parsonage with only her father for company was hardly fun. Based on facts, Mutable Passions brings Charlotte to life. The novel is a sensitive portrayal of courtship and marriage, focussing upon the strong emotions that arose after Arthur Nicholls proposed to her. The servants were fundamental to Charlotte’s existence; she treated them with respect and was always warm and friendly toward them, which was contrary to much of Victorian convention. Friends helped fill the void left in the wake of her siblings’ deaths, and it was to Ellen Nussey that Charlotte turned to when illness and depression crushed her spirits. Often portrayed a dowdy spinster downtrodden by Victorian tradition, Mutable Passions contradicts this, exploring the feelings and passions that Charlotte experienced herself. Mutable Passions is a unique novel that conveys an imagined, yet sensitive account of Charlotte’s own love affair. One that will appeal to those who enjoy historical romance novels, as well as those interested in the person responsible for great literature such as Jane Eyre and Villette.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though modern readers no longer believe in the four humors of Galenic naturalism—blood, choler, melancholy, and phlegm—early modern thought found in these bodily fluids key to explaining human emotions and behavior. In Humoring the Body, Gail Kern Paster proposes a new way to read the emotions of the early modern stage so that contemporary readers may recover some of the historical particularity in early modern expressions of emotional self-experience. Using notions drawn from humoral medical theory to untangle passages from important moral treatises, medical texts, natural histories, and major plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, Paster identifies a historical phenomenology in the language of affect by reconciling the significance of the four humors as the language of embodied emotion. She urges modern readers to resist the influence of post-Cartesian abstraction and the disembodiment of human psychology lest they miss the body-mind connection that still existed for Shakespeare and his contemporaries and constrained them to think differently about how their emotions were embodied in a premodern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this erudite and elegantly composed argument, Karol Berger uses the works of Monteverdi, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven to support two groundbreaking claims: first, that it was only in the later eighteenth century that music began to take the flow of time from the past to the future seriously; second, that this change in the structure of musical time was an aspect of a larger transformation in the way educated Europeans began to imagine and think about time with the onset of modernity, a part of a shift from the premodern Christian outlook to the modern post-Christian worldview. Until this historical moment, as Berger illustrates in his analysis of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, music was simply "in time." Its successive events unfolded one after another, but the distinction between past and future, earlier and later, was not central to the way the music was experienced and understood. But after the shift, as he finds in looking at Mozart's Don Giovanni, the experience of linear time is transformed into music's essential subject matter; the cycle of time unbends and becomes an arrow. Berger complements these musical case studies with a rich survey of the philosophical, theological, and literary trends influencing artists during this period.

Does God have emotions? Can God do anything? Does God know the future? Does God always attain what God desires? And is God entirely good? This textbook provides a clear and concise overview of the issues involved in these and other questions, exploring prominent contemporary approaches to the main issues relative to how to conceive of the God-world relationship within Christian theology. In so doing, Peckham surveys a range of live options regarding each of the primary questions, briefly considering where each falls within the spectrum of the Christian tradition and providing clear and readily understandable explanations of the technical issues involved. The result is a stimulating survey of the most prominent options in Christian theology relative to divine attributes and the God-world relationship, offered in an accessible format for students. Book Mary Astell

  • Pages : 230 pages

Book excerpt: Mary Astell: Reason, Gender, Faith includes essays from diverse disciplinary perspectives to consider the full range of Astell's political, theological, philosophical, and poetic writings. The volume does not eschew the more traditional scholarly interest in Astell's concerns about gender; rather, it reveals how Astell's works require attention not only for their role in the development of early modern feminism, but also for their interventions on subjects ranging from political authority to educational theory, from individual agency to divine service, and from Cartesian ethics to Lockean epistemology. Given the vast breadth of her writings, her active role within early modern political and theological debates, and the sophisticated complexity of her prose, Astell has few parallels among her contemporaries. Mary Astell: Reason, Gender, Faith bestows upon Astell the attention which she deserves not merely as a proto-feminist, but as a major figure of the early modern period.
