Frank Dobie, master storyteller of the American Southwest, here tells the tale of the wild and free mustangs that once roamed the western ranges. This is the story, too, of the white men and the Indians, no less wild and free, who captured them, gentled them, rode them, and annihilated them. An American classic, The Mustangs is a thoughtful and carefully crafted book by one of this country's literary greats. "This is a magnificent book, so packed with lore and legend that one is not conscious of the fact that it is history, too. Frank Dobie tells the story of the mustangs . . . the story too of the men, and the way of life the mustang brought into being." --New York Herald Tribune "Mr. Dobie brings together all his findings in a single book of solid scholarship, documented to the hilt, and inspired by his unflagging enthusiasm for the wild free creatures of the West. The Mustangs will probably remain the standard work on the subject." --New York Times "Not alone from stodgy tomes and rare pamphlets of cloistered libraries of a continent, but from widely scattered remudas and firsthand experiences of salty wranglers, have come the color, flavor and vitality to this beautiful book." --Dallas Times Herald

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What has happened to the mustang and to the wild or feral horse, whether of Spanish or American ancestry, in the West, is exhaustively and interestingly set forth by Walker D. Wyman. His is, perhaps, the final word on the history of the horse on the western range. . . . This is a book which holds the interest not only of students of western history and of the range, but also of the general reader."--New Mexico Historical Review. "A story gleaned from everything worth while that has been written on the wild horse and the bibliography alone will assure it space on any shelf of Americana. . . . Harold Bryant's illustrations are splendid."--New York Times Book Review. "This is a long-needed book--a valuable contribution to pioneer history. The range horse--the Mustang and the Cayuse--played no small part in the development of the West, but that part has been too often forgotten. . . . The story is well and interestingly told by Mr. Wyman."--Oregon Historical Quarterly. "Wyman examines authoritatively the various theories as to the origins of the wild horses of the plains, which eventually competed with the buffalo, transformed the culture of the Plains Indians, and still later constituted a major economic factor in Western ranching. . . . The work constitutes a valuable addition to Western Americana."--Chicago Sun.

Book Spanish Mustangs and Hard Times

Download or read book Spanish Mustangs and Hard Times written by Mabel Brislawn and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the people in the US West, far, far away from the old home grounds, in wild, open country where it was necessary for one to make their own, new, home ground, there was plenty of need for good horses. Good Horses, that is, because anyone that wasn't on horseback had horses pulling whatever they were riding in. They quickly found that in this wide, rough country they needed tougher horses than they already had ? horses that would not go lame, break a leg, or play out. The larger breeds weren't holding up. Small horses could whip like fury through the rocks, trees, or sagebrush where it was hard for bigger horses to go. Small horses were needed on the stagecoaches, too, because a draft team of larger horses could not stand the strain when traveling fast. And as chance would have it, there were Good Horses available right at hand that had been brought in by the Spanish explorers. These small, intelligent, quick as lightning, almost uncrushable horses had been found to be the ideal horse for the frontier and pioneering conditions of what became the Western United States. These were, then, the Cayuse, the Chevaux à (au) Pelouse, the Texas Pony, the Indian Pony, the Cowpony, the New World Spanish Barb, the Cavallo, the Spanish Pony, and the Spanish Mustang that roamed free throughout the West.

Book The Pacing mustang Illustrated edition

Download or read book The Pacing mustang Illustrated edition written by Ernest Thompson Seton and published by Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of animals are not accidentally so loved in many countries by adults and children. The heroes of the stories written by the famous Canadian writer Ernest Thompson Seton, and among them stands out for its originality the "The Pacing Mustang", are animals and birds. However, often their life and behavior are more exalted and noble than that of people. A beautiful black mustang was a pacer, that is, when running, he moved first both right legs, then both left. The Mustang took home mares with him and they eventually got used to the wild life.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice A Best Book of 2015, The Wall Street Journal "Love is the driver for Wendy Williams's new book, The Horse . . . [an] affectionate, thoroughgoing, good-hearted book." —Jaimy Gordon, The New York Times Book Review "Charming and deeply interesting . . . Ms. Williams does a marvelous job." —Pat Shipman, The Wall Street Journal The book horse-lovers have been waiting for Horses have a story to tell, one of resilience, sociability, and intelligence, and of partnership with human beings. In The Horse, the journalist and equestrienne Wendy Williams brings that story brilliantly to life. Williams chronicles the 56-million-year journey of horses as she visits with experts around the world, exploring what our biological affinities and differences can tell us about the bond between horses and humans, and what our longtime companion might think and feel. Indeed, recent scientific breakthroughs regarding the social and cognitive capacities of the horse and its ability to adapt to changing ecosystems indicate that this animal is a major evolutionary triumph. Williams charts the course that leads to our modern Equus-from the protohorse to the Dutch Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, and cow ponies of the twenty-first century. She observes magnificent ancient cave art in France and Spain that signals a deep respect and admiration for horses well before they were domesticated; visits the mountains of Wyoming with experts in equine behavior to understand the dynamics of free-roaming mustangs; witnesses the fluid gracefulness of the famous Lipizzans of Vienna; contemplates what life is like for the sure-footed, mustachioed Garrano horses who thrive on the rugged terrain of Galicia; meets a family devoted to rehabilitating abandoned mustangs on their New Hampshire farm; celebrates the Takhi horses of Mongolia; and more. She blends profound scientific insights with remarkable stories to create a unique biography of the horse as a sentient being with a fascinating past and a finely nuanced mind. The Horse is a revealing account of the animal who has been at our side through the ages, befriending us and traveling with us over the mountains and across the plains. Enriched by Williams's own experience with horses, The Horse is a masterful work of narrative nonfiction that pays tribute to this treasure of the natural world.
