Book An Ecosystem Framework for the Management of Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area

Download or read book An Ecosystem Framework for the Management of Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area written by Rabindra Singh and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an ecosystem framework for the management of Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area (MPA). The Musquash Planning Group (later called the Musquash Advisory Committee) identified specific goals and objectives for the MPA. These objectives were used in further defining specific ecosystem objectives for the MPA based on the national ecosystem objectives developed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The Musquash ecosystem objectives, like the national ecosystem objectives, cover three broad categories - biodiversity, productivity and habitat. In defining these objectives (and their sub-objectives) the approach was to look at the present and allowed human activities within the MPA and to develop operational strategies that would target the possible impacts of those activities. The framework further points to the possible performance indicators that can be used to monitor how well those objectives are being met. This report provides a summary of the relevant federal and provincial regulations that would be relevant to the human activities within the MPA. The present human activities are described and their relevance to the ecosystem framework, to monitoring, and to the management of the MPA are described.--Author's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seashore has long been the subject of fascination and study - the Ancient Greek scholar Aristotle made observations and wrote about Mediterranean sea urchins. The considerable knowledge of what to eat and where it could be found has been passed down since prehistoric times by oral tradition in many societies - in Britain it is still unwise to eat shellfish in months without an 'r' in them. Over the last three hundred years or so we have seen the formalization of science and this of course has touched intertidal ecology. Linnaeus classified specimens collected from the seashore and many common species (Patella vulgata L. , Mytilus edulis L. , Littorina littorea (L. )) bear his imprint because he formally described, named and catalogued them. Early natural historians described zonation patterns in the first part of the 19th century (Audouin and Milne-Edwards, 1832), and the Victorians became avid admirers and collectors of shore animals and plants with the advent of the new fashion of seaside holidays (Gosse, 1856; Kingsley, 1856). As science became professionalized towards the end of the century, marine biologists took advantage of low tides to gain easy access to marine life for taxonomic work and classical studies of functional morphology. The first serious studies of the ecology of the shore were made at this time (e. g.

Book Advances in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing for Fisheries and Aquaculture

Download or read book Advances in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing for Fisheries and Aquaculture written by Geoffery J. Meaden and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication is an easy-to-understand publication that emphasizes the fundamental skills and processes associated with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing. The first chapter initially puts the array of spatially related problems into perspective and discusses the earlier applications of GIS and remote sensing. Chapters, 2, 3 and 4 outline what are considered to be the basics on which GIS can function, i.e. hardware and software; spatial data; and how GIS systems themselves are best implemented. Chapter 5 looks at preparing the data for GIS use and Chapter 6 explores what remote sensing consists of and the main purposes for its use. Chapter 7 discusses the functional tools and techniques offered by typical GIS software packages. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 examine respectively, the current issues and status, including extensive case studies, of the application of GIS and remote sensing to aquaculture, to inland fisheries and to marine fisheries.
