This book also briefly explores the multi-faceted historical background of Islam in South Asia and the impact Islam has had on the assumptions and perceptions of Christianity of South Asian people in general, and specifically on the thinking and perceptions of South Asian Muslims in America. This book includes qualitative research using an ethnographic case study approach. Data presented in this book are collected from two different sources: scholarly literature related to the focal group, and structured interviews with a representative sample of South Asian Muslims in America. The study seeks to bring the four thinkers into dialogue on a number of topics, including doctrinal themes, ethical principles and the issue of political power-sharing in Lebanon. All four thinkers make several suggestions for facilitating mutual understanding and transcending old debates. The concept of God and the principle of neighbourly love seem to have particular potential as fruitful bases for further dialogue.

Authors seeking to polemicize against Jews and Christians were primarily interested in the presumed biblical annunciations of Muḥammad and his religion and / or in perceived contradictions and cases of internal abrogation in the Bible. These various concerns resulted from and had an impact on the ways in which Muslim authors accessed the scriptures.
