Book excerpt: Is there a reason for being? Why are we so often fearful? How can we know our Destiny? What is the cure for racism and hate? Is there such a thing as a "Happy Place" to be found in our lives? What is Life and am I giving it my best? When it is said that "I will give you beauty for your ashes," what does that mean exactly? And if I were a dog, what kind of dog would I be? These are questions that we all have and wonder about, yes? Ok, perhaps not that last one reflected here. But we humans do wonder, ponder and muse. It is in us to do so. And contained within these pages are some thoughts and ideas on these questions and more, along with perhaps even some answers to things that we think upon. Come walk with me a bit down this Road of Thought and let us see what lies along the way of Contemplation and Discovery. I will see you inside, my good friend!

Book The Ancient Way

Download or read book The Ancient Way written by River Jordan and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, from her home on a hill outside Nashville, River Jordan felt a call to travel to the mystical Isle of Iona, off the coast of Scotland--the island that gave birth to Celtic Christianity. In The Ancient Way she invites us to leave the sacred space of our homes and our lives and join her on this pilgrimage. With the help of friends and the kindness of strangers, Jordan winds her way across green mountains to late-night ferries, across islands and down one-way roads led by the light of Iona and a trust in God. Along the way she explores ancient Celtic Christian practices such as cherishing creation, trusting spiritual friendship, offering hospitality, creative imagination, and honoring community--carrying them home with her to infuse her daily life. This is an intimate story of imagination, of personal transformation, of stillness and prayer. It's also a quirky, thoughtful guide for cultivating divine connection and creativity as we embark on our own wild adventures, chasing after the mystery that calls us all.

Book The Five Things We Cannot Change

Download or read book The Five Things We Cannot Change written by David Richo and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2006-06-13 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A lucid, thought-provoking, and illuminating” guide to finding fulfillment and “fluid acceptance of life as it is” (Martha Beck, life coach and New York Times–bestselling author) Why is it that, despite our best efforts, many of us remain fundamentally unhappy and unfulfilled in our lives? In this provocative and inspiring book, David Richo distills thirty years of experience as a therapist to explain the underlying roots of unhappiness—and the surprising secret to finding freedom and fulfillment. There are certain facts of life that we cannot change—the unavoidable “givens” of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2) things do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time. Richo shows us that by dropping our deep-seated resistance to these givens, we can find liberation and discover the true richness that life has to offer. Blending Western psychology and Eastern spirituality, and including practical exercises, Richo shows us how to open up to our lives—including what is frightening, painful, or disappointing—and discover our greatest gifts.

Book Music in Conflict

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nili Belkind
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-10-15
  • ISBN : 1000204006
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Music in Conflict written by Nili Belkind and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in Conflict studies the complex relationship of musical culture to political life in Palestine-Israel, where conflict has both shaped and claimed the lives of Palestinians and Jews. In the context of the geography of violence that characterizes the conflict, borders and boundaries are material and social manifestations of the ways in which the production of knowledge is conditioned by political and structural violence. Ethical and aesthetic positions that shape artistic production in this context are informed by profound imbalances of power and contingent exposure to violence. Viewing expressive culture as a potent site for understanding these dynamics, the book examines the politics of sound to show how music-making reflects and forms identities, and in the process, shapes communities. The ethnography is based on fieldwork conducted in Israel and the West Bank in 2011–2012 and other excursions since then. Author has "followed the conflict" by "following the music," from concert halls to demonstrations, mixed-city community centers to Palestinian refugee camp children’s clubs, alternative urban scenes and even a checkpoint. In all the different contexts presented, the monograph is thematically and theoretically underpinned by the ways in which music is used to culturally assert or reterritorialize both spatial and social boundaries in a situation of conflict.

Book Discovering Folk Music

  • Author : Stephanie P. Ledgin
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2010-02-09
  • ISBN : 157356771X

Download or read book Discovering Folk Music written by Stephanie P. Ledgin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Ani DiFranco to Bob Dylan to Woodie Guthrie, American folk music comprises a truly diverse and rich tradition—one that's almost impossible to define in broad terms. This book explains why folk music is still highly relevant in the digital age. From indigenous music to Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen singing "This Land Is Your Land" side-by-side at the pre-inaugural concert for our first African American president, folk music has been at the center of America's history. Thomas Jefferson wooed his bride-to-be with fiddle playing. Stephen Foster captured the mood of our country in transition. The Carter Family adapted music from across the pond to Appalachia. Paul Robeson carried folk music of many lands to the world stage. Woody Guthrie's dust bowl ballads spoke to the common man, while Sixties protest music put folk on the map, following the Kingston Trio's hit, "Tom Dooley." Folk music has evolved with America's changing landscape, celebrating its multi-cultural traditions. From Irish step dancers to rap, parlor songs to Dixieland, blues to classical, Discovering Folk Music presents the genre as surprisingly diverse, every bit the product of our national melting pot. Demonstrating continuing relevance of folk music in our everyday lives, the book spotlights an amazing array of personalities, with special emphasis on the folk revival era when Dylan, Baez, Odetta, and Peter, Paul and Mary sang out. These and others influenced such contemporary performers as Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco. Those on today's "fringes of folk" scene continue to look to these deep roots while embracing alternative sounds. Included are interviews with such legendary artists as Janis Ian, Tom Paxton, and Jean Ritchie. Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, also weighs in. Discovering Folk Music is a ground-breaking look at 21st-century folk music in our rapidly changing digital world, family friendly while ripe for rediscovery by the Woodstock generation.
