Download or read book Statistics in Music Education Research written by Joshua A. Russell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Statistics in Music Education Research, author Joshua Russell explains the process of using a range of statistical analyses from inception to research design to data entry to final analysis using understandable descriptions and examples from extant music education research. He explores four main aspects of music education research: understanding logical concepts of statistical procedures and their outcomes; critiquing the use of different procedures in extant and developing research; applying the correct statistical model for not only any given dataset, but also the correct logic determining which model to employ; and reporting the results of a given statistical procedure clearly and in a way that provides adequate information for the reader to determine if the data analysis is accurate and interpretable. While it is written predominately for graduate students in music education courses, Statistics in Music Education Research will also help music education researchers and teachers of music educators gain a better understanding of how parametric statistics are employed and interpreted in music education.

Download or read book Sentiment Analysis of Music using Statistics and Machine Learning written by Aakash Mukherjee and published by Sanctum Books. This book was released on 2022-10-16 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentiment analysis and prediction of contemporary Music can have a wide range of applications in modern society, for instance, selecting music for public institutions such as hospitals or restaurants to potentially improve the emotional well-being of personnel, patients, and customers respectively. In this project, a music recommendation system is built upon a Naive Bayes Classifier trained to predict the sentiment of songs based on song lyrics alone. Online streaming platforms have become one of the most important forms of music consumption. Most streaming platforms provide tools to assess the popularity of a song in the forms of scores and rankings. In this book, we address two issues related to song popularity. First, we predict whether an already popular song may attract higher-than-average public interest and become viral. Second, we predict whether sudden spikes in the public interest will translate into long-term popularity growth. We base our findings on data from the streaming platform Billboard, Spotify, and consider appearances in its "Most-Popular" list as indicative of popularity, and appearances in its "Virals" list as indicative of interest growth. We approach the problem as a classification task and employ a Support Vector Machine model built on popularity information to predict interest, and vice versa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir by the renowned historian of music education, Bernarr Rainbow, including a selection of his writings and a biographical introduction by Peter Dickinson. Bernarr Rainbow's [1914-1998] Memoirs written in the last year or two of his life offers a fascinating read about the life of the man who became the leading historian of music education. The book answers questions about how his life and work developed and how he came to establish the Bernarr Rainbow Trust before he died in 1998. The collection will also bring together Rainbow's writings published in various magazines, some of very limited circulation. Thenotes by Peter Dickinson cover Rainbow's earlier life and career, from archival material including press cuttings and including areas he does not cover in his memoirs. There are introductions by Gordon Cox and Charles Plummeridge. PETER DICKINSON, the composer and pianist, is emeritus professor, University of Keele and University of London. He has written or edited several books about twentieth-century music, including Copland Connotations [2002], The Music of Lennox Berkeley [2003], CageTalk [2006], and the more recent Lord Berners and Samuel Barber Remembered.

Download or read book Evolution and Victorian Musical Culture written by Bennett Zon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging book explores the dynamic relationship between evolutionary science and musical culture in Victorian Britain, drawing upon a wealth of popular scientific and musical literature to contextualize evolutionary theories of the Darwinian and non-Darwinian revolutions. Bennett Zon uses musical culture to question the hegemonic role ascribed to Darwin by later thinkers, and interrogates the conceptual premise of modern debates in evolutionary musicology. Structured around the Great Chain of Being, chapters are organized by discipline in successively ascending order according to their object of study, from zoology and the study of animal music to theology and the music of God. Evolution and Victorian Musical Culture takes a non-Darwinian approach to the interpretation of Victorian scientific and musical interrelationships, debunking the idea that the arts had little influence on contemporary scientific ideas and, by probing the origins of musical interdisciplinarity, the volume shows how music helped ideas about evolution to evolve.
