Book Johann Sebastian Bach

Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach written by Philipp Spitta and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental study of Johann Sebastian Bach ranks among the great classics of musicology. Since its first publication in 1873–80, it has remained the basic work on Bach and the foundation of later research and study. The three-part treatment describes in chronological sequence practically everything that is known of the composer's life: his ancestry, his immediate family, his associations, his employers, and the countless occasions on which his musical genius emerged. Author Philipp Spitta accompanies this biographical material with quotations from primary sources: correspondence, family records, diaries, official documents, and more. In addition to biographical data, Spitta reviews Bach's musical production, with analyses of more than 500 pieces, covering all the important works. More than 450 musical excerpts are included in the main text, and a 43-page musical supplement illustrates longer passages. Despite the scholarly nature of this work, it also has the rare distinction of being a study that can be read with considerable enjoyment and great profit by every serious music lover, with or without a substantial background in the history of music or musical theory.

Book The Worlds of Johann Sebastian Bach

Download or read book The Worlds of Johann Sebastian Bach written by Raymond Erickson and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2009 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Amadeus). The Worlds of J.S. Bach offers both traditional and new perspectives on the life and work of the man who is arguably the central figure in the Western musical tradition. It appears at a time when, because of the fall of the Iron Curtain, extraordinary new discoveries are being made about Bach and his family at an increasing rate thus this book is able to incorporate important information and images not available even in the recent anniversary year of 2000. After making the case for the universality of Bach's art as an epitome of Western civilization, The Worlds of J.S. Bach considers in broad terms the composer's social, political, and artistic environment, its influence on him, and his interaction with it. Renowned specialists in history, religion, architecture, literature, theater, and dance offer the perspectives of these disciplines as they relate to Bach's milieu, while leading Bach specialists from both the U.S. and Germany focus on the man himself. The book is an outgrowth of the "celebrated" ( Boston Globe ) multidisciplinary Academies sponsored by the Aston Magna Foundation for Music and the Humanities with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book The Life and Times of Johann Sebastian Bach

Download or read book The Life and Times of Johann Sebastian Bach written by Jim Whiting and published by Mitchell Lane. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 100 years, the name of Johann Sebastian Bach has been considered among the most highly regarded of all composers. The holy cantor church musician has been written about in many books. So, it might be difficult for some of us to imagine, but for several generations after his death, Bach had been forgotten. What remained of his vast number of works gathered dust in private collections or distant archives. Many of his works were discarded; in fact, some found their way to a butcher shop and are reported to have been used as wrapping paper. It took a twenty-year-old musician who would become as well known as Bach to bring about an interest in his works. In 1829, Felix Mendelssohn performed the St. Matthew Passion, and revived interest in the long-forgotten composer. The genius of Bach was finally recognized by the world.

Book Glory and Honor

Download or read book Glory and Honor written by Gregory Wilbur and published by Cumberland House Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Sebastian Bach was a musical genius, an intellectual giant and a gracious man. His achievement in the area of music is one of the greatest tours de force in history - on a par with or surpassing that of Shakespeare, Michelangelo, Dante, Rembrandt, or Aquinas. Bach worked at a crucial time in history. He combated the ideas of the Enlightenment with its elevation of human reason as the ultimate authority of everything. His struggles, musically and professionally, are those of a man seeking to maintain a high view of worship, academics, and the grounding of all life on the Word of God. As a man valiant in his convictions, he stood against the trends and fashions of his day and succeeded as a witness of the Gospel to the generations who followed him. While his name conjures many images, musical phrases, and half-remembered stories, the life of this colossal genius provides practical lessons in leadership for both artists and anyone who strives to serve others with excellence and integrity.

Book Johann Sebastian Bach

Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach written by Rick Marschall and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-and-a-half centuries after his death, the complex life of composer Johann Sebastian Bach continues to fascinate. Bach's colorful life was anchored in his belief that "music has been ordered by God's Spirit"?so much so that he began each composition by scrawling Jesu, juva (Jesus, help me) at the top of a blank page and concluded each with S.D.G. (short for Soli Deo Gloria, to God alone be the glory). Through the eyes of noted music and culture writer Rick Marschall, the intensely personal yet boldly public faith that earned Bach the nickname "The Fifth Evangelist" takes on fresh meaning. From a survey of Bach's family and its deep Christian roots to a behind-the-scenes look at how he crafted his masterpieces, this book paints a picture of an astonishing figure and his relationship with his God. Marschall brings Bach's enduring music and influence to the postmodern world and to all who would draw inspiration from his relentless pursuit of divinely ordained creativity.

Book Johann Sebastian Bach His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany 1685 1750 Vol 1 of 3

Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany 1685 1750 Vol 1 of 3 written by Philipp Spitta and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johann Sebastian Bach, His Work and Influence on the Music of Germany, 1685-1750, Vol. 1 of 3 Its statements would be entitled to our belief, if only from its having first seen the light at a time when Bach's memory was still fresh, and in the city where he had lived and laboured for twenty-seven years; and this is confirmed by the fact that it was compiled by Karl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the composer's second son, and by Johann Friederich Agricola, one of the most distinguished of his pupils. It is obvious that they combined for this work, because Agricola had enjoyed the benefit of Sebastian Bach's instructions at a time when his son had quitted the paternal roof, and so had personal knowledge of some circumstances which Philipp Emanuel Bach had learned only indirectly. Agricola also contributed to Jakob Adlung's Musica Mechanica Organœdi (Berlin, 1768) a number of valuable notes regarding his illustrious teacher. The simple picture of Bach's life and artistic powers which the Necrology contains, with a summary review of his compositions, has been transcribed by almost all the later biographers - so called. Thus, in the first place, Johann Adam Hiller, in his Lebensbeschreibnugen berühmter Musikgelehrten und Tonkünstler neuerer Zeit, Part I., pages 9 to 29 (Leipzig, 1784). He was followed by Ernst Ludwig Gerber, Historisch-Biographisches Lexicon der Tonkünstler, Part I., col. 86 (Leipzig, 1790), who does not seem to have known whence Hiller had derived his information. Still, even in Gerber, we here and in other places come upon original observations worthy of remark, founded on statements supplied by his father, who had been Sebastian Bach's pupil. A curious production in the way of a biography occurs in Hirsching, Historisch-literarisches Handbuch berühmter und denkwürdiger Personen, welche im achtzehnte Jahrhundert gestorben sind, Vol. I., page 77 (Leipzig, 1794).
