Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music as an Art begins by examining music through a philosophical lens, engaging in discussions about tonality, music and the moral life, music and cognitive science and German idealism, as well as recalling the author's struggle to encourage his students to distinguish the qualities of good music. Scruton then explains – via erudite chapters on Schubert, Britten, Rameau, opera and film – how we can develop greater judgement in music, recognising both good taste and bad, establishing musical values, as well as musical pleasures. As Scruton argues in this book, in earlier times, our musical culture had secure foundations in the church, the concert hall and the home; in the ceremonies and celebrations of ordinary life, religion and manners. Yet we no longer live in that world. Fewer people now play instruments and music is, for many, a form of largely solitary enjoyment. As he shows in Music as an Art, we live at a critical time for classical music, and this book is an important contribution to the debate, of which we stand in need, concerning the place of music in Western civilization.

They Not Only Display Their Own Technique And Art Of Colour And Line But Also Express, Interpret And Exhibit The Soul/Spirit And Beauty Of Another Art, The Art Of Music, The Art Of Svara-Laya And Cultivated/Cultured Voice. Music Was Considered To Be Of Divine Origin And Was Supposed To Possess The Property Of Evoking An Ecstatic State Of Mind Or Mood, Called Rasa-Anubhuti, In The Musician As Well As The Listerner. This Conception Of Rasa Is The Basis Of All Art In India. The Sadhakas (Practitioners) Devised Some Formulas In Order To Capture And Comprehend The Divine Quality Of Music And To Evoke Rasa Or Brahmananda. These Were Formulated In The Form Of Prayers In Which The Conceptual Form, Dhyana-Murti, Of The Raga Was Described. Thus The Ragas Were Personified Or Deified. This Fact Provided A Rich And Expressive Theme To Indian Painters And It Has Considerably Enriched The Art Treasure Of India. Whether The Dhyana-Theory Of Ragas Is Scientific Or Otherwise It Certainly Furnished A Rich Source Of Theme For The Indian Artists Who Painted Some Of The Most Charming And Inspiring Pictures Representing The Ragas (Melodies). The Two Ragamala Mss Discovered In A Manuscripts Collection At Jammu Are A Part Of The Extensive Art Treasure Created All Over India During The Period From 16Th To 19Th Centuries. Book Women and Musical Salons in the Enlightenment

Download or read book Women and Musical Salons in the Enlightenment written by Rebecca Cypess and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of musical salons in Europe and North America between 1760 and 1800 and the salon hostesses who shaped their musical worlds. In eighteenth-century Europe and America, musical salons—and the women who hosted and made music in them—played a crucial role in shaping their cultural environments. Musical salons served as a testing ground for new styles, genres, and aesthetic ideals, and they acted as a mediating force, bringing together professional musicians and their audiences of patrons, listeners, and performers. For the salonnière, the musical salon offered a space between the public and private spheres that allowed her to exercise cultural agency. In this book, musicologist and historical keyboardist Rebecca Cypess offers a broad overview of musical salons between 1760 and 1800, placing the figure of the salonnière at its center. Cypess then presents a series of in-depth case studies that meet the salonnière on her own terms. Women such as Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy in Paris, Marianna Martines in Vienna, Sara Levy in Berlin, Angelica Kauffman in Rome, and Elizabeth Graeme in Philadelphia come to life in multidimensional ways. Crucially, Cypess uses performance as a tool for research, and her interpretations draw on her experience with the instruments and performance practices used in eighteenth-century salons. In this accessible, interdisciplinary book, Cypess explores women’s agency and authorship, reason and sentiment, and the roles of performing, collecting, listening, and conversing in the formation of eighteenth-century musical life.

Book Lavinia Fontana s Mythological Paintings

Download or read book Lavinia Fontana s Mythological Paintings written by Liana De Girolami Cheney and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates emblematic and art-historical issues in Lavinia Fontana’s mythological paintings. Fontana is the first female painter of the sixteenth century in Italy to depict female nudes, as well as mythological and emblematic paintings associated with concepts of beauty and wisdom. Her paintings reveal an appropriation of the antique, a fusion between patronage and culture, and a humanistic pursuit of Mannerist conceits. Fontana’s secular imagery provides a challenging paragone with the male tradition of history painting during the sixteenth century and paves the way for new subjects to be depicted and interpreted by female painters of the seventeenth century.
