Book Music Therapy as an Intervention to Reduce Psychological Cancer related Symptoms in Adult Cancer Patients

Download or read book Music Therapy as an Intervention to Reduce Psychological Cancer related Symptoms in Adult Cancer Patients written by A'kya Adams (R.N) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a debilitating disease that causes both physical and psychological effects, which in turn may result in poor quality of life. Since 2016, more than 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with cancer, and with improvement in treatment modalities, the number of individuals surviving cancer and cancer treatment is expected to grow (American Cancer Society, 2018a). Research examining alternative treatments such as music therapy has been reported to help alleviate pain in cancer patients. However, there is limited research focusing on the use of music therapy as a treatment modality for the psychosocial side effects of cancer such as anxiety and depression of cancer. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the effects of music interventions on individuals who are experiencing cancer-related psychosocial symptoms and their quality of life. -- from the abstract.

Book excerpt: RESEARCH QUESTION OF THE HTA REPORT: The aims of this investigation are to - assess the benefit of music therapy (MT) as a therapy accompanying oncological standard therapy by comparing it to no accompanying therapy or other accompanying therapies in adult cancer patients with regard to patient-relevant outcomes, - determine the costs arising from accompanying MT in comparison with a different or no accompanying therapy in adult cancer patients (intervention costs), - assess the cost effectiveness of MT accompanying standard therapy in comparison with no accompanying therapy or other accompanying therapies in adult cancer patients as well as - review ethical, social, legal, and organizational aspects associated with the intervention. CONCLUSION OF THE HTA REPORT: MT as an accompanying therapy in oncology has already been established in the German healthcare system, particularly in the (acute and palliative) inpatient and rehabilitation settings, through service reimbursement as well as its mentions in national guidelines. The present HTA reveals indications and hints of a short-term benefit of MT in comparison with standard care with regard to fatigue, mood swings, anxiety, anxiety & depression, stress/tension, and health-related quality of life as well as, over the course of several sessions, with regard to cancer-related adverse events, fatigue, and mood swings. In comparison with other accompanying therapies (music medicine, mindfulness-based stress reduction), a hint of greater short-term benefit of MT was found with regard to fatigue and subjective well-being. Notably, the available evidence shows a positive effect particularly for comparatively short-term psychological outcomes and, in general, primarily for non-biological outcomes - soon after the intervention. For most biological (clinical) outcomes as well as for persistent psychological conditions such as depression, there is generally a lack of evidence in favour of MT. However, these short-term effects are to be considered in light of the typically precarious, in some cases life-threatening, situation of patients. Furthermore, MT is a non-invasive intervention associated with few ethical concerns and is impossible to conduct without considerable patient motivation and cooperation. The results on the benefit of MT are transferable to Germany if a consistent professional concept and standardized training and/or certification can be assumed to be in place, which is, however, not entirely the case in view of the current lack of regulation. However, a uniform consensus has been reached on the occupational profile as well as (voluntary) certification. Due to differences in reimbursement and local availability, access to MT (in general and in oncology) is not uniformly regulated among inpatient care, the rehabilitation sector, and outpatient care. Due to a lack of data, some questions cannot be answered at this time: No studies were found on the outcomes of coping or activities of daily living, and no study investigating MT as a group intervention was found. Data are insufficient for performing a comparative analysis of the benefit of MT in different cancer entities or for a comparison of curative versus palliative therapy. In the direct comparison with alternative accompanying therapies, MT in the form defined herein was studied in only 3 out of 10 studies, and no studies investigated it in comparison with "sham treatment". No data are available on cost-effectiveness, and estimating the intervention costs is hindered by a lack of data on average treatment duration and frequency of sessions. Only 1 out of the 10 studies was conducted in an outpatient setting. Two ongoing studies on MT from Israel and Germany were found, and their design might potentially produce insights regarding longer-term effects and coping (outcome of "resilience").

Download or read book 19 INPATIENT MUSIC THERAPY EFFECTS ON SELF REPORTED SYMPTOMS IN A CANCER CENTER A PRELIMINARY REPORT written by Mi Sun Bae and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction:Music therapy has shown benefits for reducing distress in individuals with cancer. We explore the effects of music therapy on self-reported symptoms of patients receiving inpatient care at a comprehensive cancer center. Methods:Music therapy was available as part of an inpatient integrative oncology consultation service; we examined interventions and symptoms for consecutive patients treated by a board certified music therapist from 9/2016-5/2017. Patients completed the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS, 10 symptoms, scale 0-10, 10 most severe) before and after the intervention. Data was summarized by descriptive statistics. Change in ESAS symptom and subscale scores [physical distress (PHS), psychological distress (PSS), and global distress (GDS)] were evaluated by Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results:Data were evaluable for 96 of 100 consecutive patients; 55% were women, average age 50, majority with hematologic malignancies (47%). Reasons for music therapy referral included: anxiety/stress (67%), adjustment disorder/coping (28%), and mood elevation/depression (17%). Highest (worst) symptoms at baseline were sleep disturbance (5.7) and well-being (5.5). We observed statistically and clinically significant improvement (means) for anxiety (-2.3u00b11.5), drowsiness (-2.1u00b12.2), depression (-2.1u00b11.9), nausea (-2.0u00b12.4), fatigue (-1.9u00b11.5), pain (-1.8u00b11.4), shortness of breath (-1.4u00b12.2), appetite (-1.1u00b11.7); and for all ESAS subscales (all pu2019s

There are various factors that constitute suffering to cancer patients. Apart from physical pain, cancer patients usually experience emotional crisis and spiritual struggles (Magill, 2008). Music therapy is believed to be one of the most effective treatments for cancer patients. It provides a holistic care to patients with cancer. It will not only manage the physical sensation, but also address the psychological, social and spiritual parts of the patients (Magill, 2009). Although current studies have suggested the benefits of using music therapy in reducing pain for cancer patients, it is not a common practice in Hong Kong. As the administration rate of music therapy relies heavily on the knowledge of the nurses (Kwekkeboom, 2008). Therefore, this paper aims at providing evidence on the use of music therapy. In the hope of a clinical guideline, it can increase the administration rate of music therapy for cancer pain management in clinical setting. Apart from the clinical guideline, an implementation and evaluation plan on music therapy will also be discussed in this paper. There will be a full description from preparation to evaluation. Nurses can make use of this reference guide to provide music therapy for their cancer patients in respect to pain management. Download or read book Cancer Caregivers written by Allison J. Applebaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal caregivers - family members, friends, and other loved ones - are an essential, uncompensated and significantly burdened extension of the healthcare team. Rapid advances in cancer care, including new drugs and immunotherapies and more sophisticated diagnostic tools, have markedly improved the ability to medically extend lives and enhance survival. As patients are living longer, with today's shorter hospital stays and shift towards increased outpatient care, however, the demands placed on all caregivers and their needs have substantially increased. Cancer Caregivers reveals the field of Psycho-Oncology's exploration of the depth of complexities of caregiving experiences and identifies the vast expanses left to be understood. This text describes the characteristics and experiences of cancer caregivers based on their life stage, relationship to the patient, and ethnic group membership, as well as patients' disease and treatment type. It highlights the significant progress in research focused on the development and dissemination of psychosocial interventions for cancer caregivers, and includes in-depth case studies to illustrate their delivery and application. The text also explores the provision of support to caregivers in the community and the legal and ethical concerns faced by caregivers throughout the caregiving process. Cancer Caregivers offers both fundamental and practical information and is the essential resource for all healthcare professionals who work with patients and families facing cancer.

Book The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing Volume III Wellbeing

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing Volume III Wellbeing written by Rachel Heydon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing, Volume III: Wellbeing explores the connections between singing and health, promoting the power of singing—in public policy and in practice—in confronting health challenges across the lifespan. These chapters shape an interdisciplinary research agenda that advances singing’s theoretical, empirical, and applied contributions, providing methodologies that reflect individual and cultural diversities. Contributors assess the current state of knowledge and present opportunities for discovery in three parts: Singing and Health Singing and Cultural Understanding Singing and Intergenerational Understanding In 2009, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada funded a seven-year major collaborative research initiative known as Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing (AIRS). Together, global researchers from a broad range of disciplines addressed three challenging questions: How does singing develop in every human being? How should singing be taught and used to teach? How does singing impact wellbeing? Across three volumes, The Routledge Companion to Interdisciplinary Studies in Singing consolidates the findings of each of these three questions, defining the current state of theory and research in the field. Volume III: Wellbeing focuses on this third question and the health benefits of singing, singing praises for its effects on wellbeing.
