The research focuses on the teaching and learning dynamics of three of Puerto Rico’s traditional musical genres—Plena, Bomba, and Música Campesina—which have survived for centuries through oral transmission and enculturation within community settings. Seldom have these communal dynamics or the learning processes that occur in such environments been studied. The research found that, even though the idiosyncrasies and modus operandi diverge among the initiatives, the ways in which community educators, participants, and leaders learn have little variation. The educational practices and the sustainability efforts of the Community Music initiatives provide a fertile ground for the development of higher level and K-12 music education programs rooted in Puerto Rican music"--

However, a considerable amount of their music has proven to be difficult to access and may contain numerous errors. This research project intends to contribute to the accessibility of such music and to encourage similar studies of Puerto Rican music. This study focuses on the music of Héctor Campos Parsi (1922-1998), one of the most prominent composers of the 20th century in Puerto Rico. After an overview of the historical background of music on the island and the biography of the composer, four works from his art song repertoire are given for detailed examination. A product of this study is the first corrected edition of his cycles Canciones de Cielo y Agua, Tres Poemas de Corretjer, Los Paréntesis, and the song Majestad Negra. These compositions date from 1947 to 1959, and reflect both the European and nationalistic writing styles of the composer during this time. Data for these corrections have been obtained from the composer's manuscripts, published and unpublished editions, and published recordings. The corrected scores are ready for publication and a compact disc of this repertoire, performed by soprano Melliangee Pérez and the author, has been recorded to bring to life these revisions. Despite the best intentions of the author, the various copyright issues have yet to be resolved. It is hoped that this document will provide the foundation for a resolution and that these important works will be available for public performance and study in the near future.

Exploring the relationship between the social history and forms of cultural expression of Puerto Ricans, she focuses on the years between the two world wars. Her material integrates the experiences of the mostly working-class Puerto Rican musicians who struggled to make a living during this period with those of their compatriots and the other ethnic groups with whom they shared the cultural landscape. (Lola Rodriguez de Tio, 1868) Puerto Rican poet and political activist Lola Rodriguez de Tio penned these words after being inspired by the call for the independence of Puerto Rico. Her words were further canonized in Puerto Rican cultural identity after being published in the song La Borinquena by composer Rafael Hernandez. Hernandez’s song would later become a musical symbol of national identity for the island of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican Diaspora. The connection between the two islands of Puerto Rico and Cuba emerge as constant themes throughout contemporary culture. They are often manifested as the evolution of unique Puerto Rican characteristics of music that was imported from Cuba. Although both islands have shared musical influences with one another through diverse channels of distribution, this study focuses on the impact US metropolitan regions such as New York have had upon the Puerto Rican adoption of Cuban music. In order to understand the musical influence of US mainland upon the Puerto Rican Diaspora concerning Cuban music research was concentrated into six major overarching themes. These themes deal with channels of music distribution (i.e. radio, music stores, promoters, etc.) venues and associations, national cultural identity, historical significance, migration, and socio-economics. This research primarily deals with the era of the 20th century primarily between the timeframe of the 1920’s to the 1970's. By exploring these themes this study largely deals with the existence of the unique musical relationship Cuba and Puerto Rico share in contrast with other Latin American nations and territories. There is a definite distinction between the two musical worlds, however through years of migration and musical genre evolutions, the boundaries between them are at times blurred, at least on a superficial level.

The same idea applies to Jazz and the Afro-Caribbean music created within the African diaspora and influenced by Latin and European styles in the United States. More recently, the meaning of diaspora has been used to refer to a group of people and some aspects of their culture (Rivera 2010, 104). For older and newer generations of Puerto Rican musicians two traditions have intersected to create a modern form of expression that reaffirms Puerto Rico's musical creativity and contemporary tendency. In 1989 Warren Pinckney wrote the last known paper about jazz made by Puerto Ricans. Besides Warren Pinckney's article, Puerto Rican Jazz and the Incorporation of Folk Music: An Analysis of New Musical Direction, (1989) I have not found another paper or essay published specifically about jazz music made by Puerto Ricans. The contribution and innovation of these musicians and rhythms has been overlooked in most cases or even completely neglected in the literature. This thesis will explore the musical influence jazz has had in traditional Puerto Rican music and vice versa. It will also discuss the modernization and revitalization of traditional Puerto Rican music by incorporating jazz, providing a new visualization of Latin American music. The field research undergirding this thesis was driven by three goals: first, to demonstrate the contribution of Puerto Rican musicians to contemporary Jazz and Latin Jazz; second, to determine how movement back and forth between the United States and the island has fueled both jazz and traditional music; and third, to describe how this movement has revitalized and modernized Puerto Rican musical traditions. What has emerged is a story that follows an outline of traditional Puerto Rican music and Jazz tradition being melded together.
