Book Composition and Creativity in the Elementary Music Class

Download or read book Composition and Creativity in the Elementary Music Class written by Samantha Lackey and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After my kindergarten learned how to read and count stick notation, students got to create their own rhythms on the whiteboard. We used these rhythms as an ostinato while we sang a scale and built up to using them while singing a song. To help us keep a steady beat, we played a game to the tune Acka Backa. Once they learned Acka Backa, we used glockenspiels to keep a beat. This year I have had a major shift in my career from 5-12 to Elementary music. Even though my Masters' work has been in instrumental music, I feel so much more organized. I can plan my lessons more effectively and utilize a lot of play-based learning now. My communication to parents has improved as well. I started using Happy Notes to give to students in class. These notes can be for anything good I see that I want to encourage and reinforce. For example, some of the notes I have given out have been for good posture while singing or playing the recorder, for being an active listener, raising their hand quietly, taking good care of instruments, and being a positive example. In addition to these notes, I take a picture of the student holding the note and send it to the family on SeeSaw. I also post videos from class occasionally and have even shared articles during Music In Our Schools Month. We read Leadership Lessons by Bill Snyder (Shoop & Scott, 1999) that gave me a lot of enthusiasm to do a much better job at goal setting. Through this, I have been focusing more on the steps to achieve the goals rather than the goal itself. I try to help the students see and identify their progress. One of my first grade classes is especially difficult due to unregulated emotions and lack of physical self-control. When we have a class period without major issues, I make sure to convey several praises to all students, and especially those who may struggle at other times, to reinforce those behaviors. Prior to beginning my Masters', I was heading towards burnout. Lack of administrative support, other staff members that would talk poorly on our program and try to pit students against music, a counselor actively recruiting students out of music into study hall, and poor scheduling were some of the reasons I was heading down this dark spiral. Through these classes and the switch in my career, I am happier than ever. I began to see the reason why I became a teacher and how big of an impact I can leave on these students' lives. These classes have helped me learn how to be much more organized and truly enjoy my time teaching the students.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study is to chronicle the experiences of an elementary music educator incorporating composition and improvisation activities into her elementary general music curriculum. I interviewed a primary music specialist with the purpose of discovering her background in teaching music. The questions focused on the teacher’s experience with music composition. After this interview, I observed the teacher in a third-grade general music composition lesson. I documented how the teacher approached the lesson and any steps she took to adapt the lesson to the needs of their students and her teaching style.

Book Music Composition for Teens a Graded Second Course

Download or read book Music Composition for Teens a Graded Second Course written by Aiana Janse Van Rensburg , Ph.d. and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-26 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written as an aid for the creative teacher who wishes to expand composition in the music class. It is a graded course, following on Music Composition for Teens - a graded First Course. Activities include assignments on more advanced work including triads, secondary triads, four-part writing and twentieth-century techniques. This is also a multimedia course that uses keyboards, instruments, video, recording devices, computers, notation software and other media. It is aimed at encouraging student interactivity with various media. It is also a multi-arts course as visual, dramatic and language arts are included where applicable. The course includes music from various cultures and this multi-cultural approach allows students to develop a deeper understanding of various tone systems, instruments and musical approaches used across the world. Assignments focus on structured creativity which guides students to symbolize sound through guided composition activities, thus enabling students to acquire a musical literacy. This composition course is neither a theory nor a harmony method, but rather a composition skill and knowledge builder. Teachers may supplement composition assignments with more detailed theory and harmony work. This course is aimed at the acquisition of standard notation skills. In addition there is an introduction to the use of improvisation, electronic media and twentieth-century techniques employing graphic notation. Composition assignments begin with simple two or four measure phrases exploring new concepts. The assignments become more challenging as the course progresses. Compositions need not be enormous works of many pages. Indeed, shorter compositions which accurately demonstrate a compositional device will be far more worthwhile and less daunting to the beginner composer. Any of the composition assignments can be expanded if necessary. Even the simplest four measure structure can be expanded to a lengthy composition by using the devices learned in the module. Teachers should engage students through an anticipatory explorative set at the start of composition activities with suitable listening, visual, kinesthetic and explorative activities. Exploration engages the imagination and inspires critical thinking, speculation and the creative process. Suggestions have been included where applicable. Listening suggestions include more well-known works easily accessible in the media. A wide variety of musical styles is addressed and explored in this course. Teachers should use discretion, not all assignments would be suitable for your particular group. However, by exploring many musical styles e.g. jazz, African music, Baroque, ensemble, etc. the idea remains that Composing and creative activities are for skill building and application; Knowledge regarding various musical styles and cultures should be gained through active, creative exploration; Various styles and compositional techniques should be learned, not to stereotype student compositions, but to broaden the young musician's scope and horizons.

Book Using Music to Enhance Student Learning

Download or read book Using Music to Enhance Student Learning written by Jana R. Fallin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating musical activities in the elementary school classroom can assist in effectively teaching and engaging students in Language Arts, Science, Math, and Social Studies, while also boosting mental, emotional and social development. However, many elementary education majors fear they lack the needed musical skills to use music successfully. Future elementary school teachers need usable, practical musical strategies to easily infuse into their curriculum. Written for both current and future teachers with little or no previous experience in music, Using Music to Enhance Student Learning, Second Edition offers strategies that are not heavily dependent on musical skills. While many textbooks are devoted to teaching music theory skills, this textbook is dedicated to pedagogy – the actual teaching of music – particularly in those schools without a separate music class in their curriculum. The ultimate goal is for future teachers to provide their elementary school classes with engaging learning experiences. These learning experiences are clearly presented to enable children to acquire knowledge in all subject areas within a joyful, creative environment rich with music activities. New to the second edition are the animated listening maps, more audio tracks, a new guitar unit, expanded coverage in the recorder unit, a connection with visual art and music, expanded activities in American history and math, and updated research and statistics. SPECIAL FEATURES Animated "Listening Maps" help listeners focus on music selections through clear visual representations of sound. Group Activities reinforce the social aspects of music-making, as well as the benefits of collaborative teaching and learning. A thorough integration of music in the curriculum establishes that music is essential in a child’s development, and that the incorporation of music will enhance all other subjects/activities in the classroom. Learning Aids include "Tantalizing Tidbits of Research," which provide the justifications for why these activities are important, as well as "Teaching Tips," and "Thinking It Through" activities.
