Book excerpt: Access to storerooms and theater archives at the original Elitch Gardens started the author along a backward, winding path of Colorado's musical history. Scrapbooks kept by Mary Elitch gave tantalizing hints of the actual impact the woman had on Denver and Colorado, and the story became more and more interesting the further back the author went. Musicians working in saloons with gunshots ringing out through the performances. A rare orchestrion housed in one saloon. A drunken singer who would perform and then return to his mining shack. Central City calling in the militia to keep order in the opera house. And prostitutes in the front row. The stories associated with music in early Colorado are fascinating and entertaining. In this history, the author brings them to light in an easier to read, informative fashion. You will read about Mary Elitch and the foundation of the Denver Symphony. Find out about the conductor who came to Colorado to die only to live for many years. What role did Horace Tabor and his fortune play in creating theaters and what happened to those theaters? Why was opera such a big deal in the wild west or was it? Learn about the Silver Circuit and the performers who traveled it. This short history will give you insight into how the vibrant musical life of Colorado began.

Book MJ The Genius of Michael Jackson

Download or read book MJ The Genius of Michael Jackson written by Steve Knopper and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of Michael Jackson, a “vivid…gripping...authoritative account of a world-changing force of nature” (Rolling Stone), celebrating the King of Pop’s legendary contributions to music, dance, and popular culture. From the moment in 1965 when he first stepped on stage—at age seven—in Gary, Indiana, Michael Jackson was destined to become the undisputed King of Pop. In a career spanning four decades, Jackson became a global icon, selling over four hundred million albums, earning thirteen Grammy awards, and spinning dance moves that captivated the world. Songs like “Billie Jean” and “Black and White” altered our national discussion of race and equality, and Jackson’s signature aesthetic, from the single white glove to the moonwalk, defined a generation. Despite publicized scandals and controversy, Jackson’s ultimate legacy will always be his music. In an account that “reminds us why Michael Jackson was, indeed, a ‘genius’ entertainer” (New York Newsday), Rolling Stone contributing editor Steve Knopper delves deeply into Jackson’s music and talent. From the artist’s early days with the Jackson 5, to his stratospheric success as a solo artist, to “Beat It” and “Thriller,” “Bad” and “The Man in the Mirror,” to his volatile final years, his attempted comeback, and untimely death, Knopper draws on his “critical and reportorial savvy in assessing Jackson’s creative peaks and valleys,” (USA TODAY) exploring the beguiling and often contradictory forces that fueled Michael Jackson’s genius. Drawing on an amazing four hundred interviews—ranging from Jackson’s relatives, friends, and key record executives to celebrities like will.i.am and Weird Al Yankovic—this critical biography puts his career into perspective and celebrates his triumph in art and music. This is “a thoughtful look at an artist who grew up in a segregated mill town and who, for the rest of his life, made music to bring down walls” (Chicago Tribune).

Book The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet 1965 68

Download or read book The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet 1965 68 written by Keith Waters and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Second Quintet" -- the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1960s -- was one of the most innovative and influential groups in the history of the genre. Each of the musicians who performed with Davis--saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams--went on to a successful career as a top player. The studio recordings released by this group made profound contributions to improvisational strategies, jazz composition, and mediation between mainstream and avant-garde jazz, yet most critical attention has focused instead on live performances or the socio-cultural context of the work. Keith Waters' The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68 concentrates instead on the music itself, as written, performed, and recorded. Treating six different studio recordings in depth--ESP, Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, Miles in the Sky, and Filles de Kilimanjaro--Waters has tracked down a host of references to and explications of Davis' work. His analysis takes into account contemporary reviews of the recordings, interviews with the five musicians, and relevant larger-scale cultural studies of the era, as well as two previously unexplored sources: the studio outtakes and Wayne Shorter's Library of Congress composition deposits. Only recently made available, the outtakes throw the master takes into relief, revealing how the musicians and producer organized and edited the material to craft a unified artistic statement for each of these albums. The author's research into the Shorter archives proves to be of even broader significance and interest, as Waters is able now to demonstrate the composer's original conception of a given piece. Waters also points out errors in the notated versions of the canonical songs as they often appear in the main sources available to musicians and scholars. An indispensible resource, The Miles Davis Quintet Studio Recordings: 1965-1968 is suited for the jazz scholar as well as for jazz musicians and aficionados of all levels.

Colorado Music Hall of Fame director and author G. Brown presents over 200 interviews with an array of performers, from the late Jerry Garcia and Dave Matthews to Bono and Paul McCartney, as well as the most detailed accounts to date of the legendary Beatles show in 1964, Bruce Springsteen's first outdoor concert ever in 1978, and U2's career-making 1983 video shoot.
