Book Words Without Music A Memoir

Download or read book Words Without Music A Memoir written by Philip Glass and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller "Reads the way Mr. Glass's compositions sound at their best: propulsive, with a surreptitious emotional undertow." —Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, New York Times Philip Glass has, almost single-handedly, crafted the dominant sound of late-twentieth-century classical music. Yet in Words Without Music, his critically acclaimed memoir, he creates an entirely new and unexpected voice, that of a born storyteller and an acutely insightful chronicler, whose behind-the-scenes recollections allow readers to experience those moments of creative fusion when life so magically merged with art. From his childhood in Baltimore to his student days in Chicago and at Juilliard, to his first journey to Paris and a life-changing trip to India, Glass movingly recalls his early mentors, while reconstructing the places that helped shape his creative consciousness. Whether describing working as an unlicensed plumber in gritty 1970s New York or composing Satyagraha, Glass breaks across genres and re-creates, here in words, the thrill that results from artistic creation. Words Without Music ultimately affirms the power of music to change the world.

Book Shared Meanings in the Film Music of Philip Glass

Download or read book Shared Meanings in the Film Music of Philip Glass written by Tristian Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of music within multimedia contexts has become an increasingly active area of scholarly research. However, the application of such studies to musical genres outside the 'classical' film canon, or in television and other media remains largely unexplored in any detail. Tristian Evans demonstrates how postminimal music interacts with other media forms, focusing on the film music by Philip Glass, but also taking into account works by other composers such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley, John Adams and others inspired by minimalist and postminimal practices. Additionally, Evans develops innovative ways of analysing this music, based on an interdisciplinary approach, and draws on research from areas that include philosophy, linguistics and film theory. The book offers one of the first in-depth studies of Philip Glass's music for film, considering The Hours and Dracula, Naqoyqatsi, Notes on a Scandal and Watchmen, while examining re-applications of the music in new cinematic and televisual contexts. The book will appeal to musicologists but also to those working in the fields of film music, cultural studies, media studies and multimedia.

Book The Not Doings of an Insomniac

Download or read book The Not Doings of an Insomniac written by and published by . This book was released on 2020-04 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Instrumental). The Not-Doings of an Insomniac - Partita for Solo Double Bass with spoken texts - was premiered by Robert Black at the International Society of Bassist Convention at the Griffin Concert Hall in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Not-Doings of an Insomniac developed as a result of Philip Glass's frequent travels to unfamiliar cities and different time-zones, changes that often bring on bouts of insomnia. While on a trip in Europe in 2015, Glass decided to turn these redundant waking hours into something useful, and one of the results is this Partita for Solo Double Bass, written for Robert Black of Bang on a Can All-Stars fame. The piece is written in seven movements, each with its own title: Not Dreaming, Tasting, Smelling, Hearing, Seeing, Touching respectively, and finishing with Not Beginning. Not Ending. What raises this set into something atmospheric and theatrical are the poems in between each movement. These are by Glass's friends or associates, and the texts by Lou Reed, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and Arthur Russell are read on the recording of this work by Robert Black.

Book Circus Days and Nights

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Lax
  • Publisher : Abrams
  • Release : 2009-06-02
  • ISBN : 1468307665
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Circus Days and Nights written by Robert Lax and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though many hold him to be one of the greatest American poets of this century, Lax has maintained a low profile, living and writing in seclusion on the Greek island of Patmos. In Circus Days & Nights, Lax's three great long poems on the circus—“Circus of the Sun,†? “Mogador's Book,†? and “Sunset City†?—are collected together for the first time, placing this early masterwork in the position within American literature that it so richly deserves. Each of the three poems in this collection expresses a reverence for the acts of daring, beauty, and grace that make the circus the singular event it is. What also emerges is the drawing of a link between this world of the circus—wherein a tent is erected, acts are performed, and then the tent is disassembled only to be re-erected the next day—and Lax's faith. As Denise Levertov has said, “the radiant security of Lax’s faith appears in his work as a serenity of tone.†?
