Book Fundamentals of Musical Composition

Download or read book Fundamentals of Musical Composition written by Arnold Schoenberg and published by Gardners Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Musical Composition represents the culmination of more than forty years in Schoenberg's life devoted to the teaching of musical principles to students and composers in Europe and America. For his classes he developed a manner of presentation in which 'every technical matter is discussed in a very fundamental way, so that at the same time it is both simple and thorough'. This book can be used for analysis as well as for composition. On the one hand, it has the practical objective of introducing students to the process of composing in a systematic way, from the smallest to the largest forms; on the other hand, the author analyses in thorough detail and with numerous illustrations those particular sections in the works of the masters which relate to the compositional problem under discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A composer's study and celebration of a difficult but influential artist, his work, and his time Proposing that Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) has been more discussed than heard, more tolerated than loved, composer Allen Shawn puts aside ultimate judgments about Schoenberg's place in musical history to explore the composer's fascinating world in a series of "linked essays--soundings" that are more searching than analytical, more suggestive than definitive. In an approach that is unusual for a book of an avowedly introductory character, the text plunges into the details of some of Schoenberg works, while at the same time providing a broad overview of his involvement in music, painting and the history through which he lived. Emphasizing music as an expressive art of rhythms and tones, Shawn approaches Schoenberg primarily from the listener's point of view, uncovering both the seeds of his radicalism in his early music and the traditional bases of his later work. Although liberally sprinkled with musical examples, the text can be read without them. By turns witty, personal, opinionated and instructive, "Arnold Schoenberg's Journey" is above all an appreciation of a great musical and artistic imagination in a time unlike any other.

Book Schoenberg s Models for Beginners in Composition

Download or read book Schoenberg s Models for Beginners in Composition written by Gordon Root and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models for Beginners in Composition was one of Arnold Schoenberg's earliest attempts to reach a broad American audience through his pedagogical ideas. The novelty of MModels for Beginners in Composition lay in its streamlined approach-one basing all aspects of composition including motivic design, harmony, and the construction of themes on the two-measure phrase. In its practical function as a syllabus for the American classroom, Models for Beginners in Composition stands alone. One of its most significant contributions to American music education was its use of the two-measure phrase as the building block for an entire compositional method. This revised edition of Models for Beginners in Composition by Gordon Root incorporates Schoenberg's corrections to the original manuscript and a commentary tracing the evolution of Schoenberg's unique pedagogical approach. These features allow readers to utilize and explore the text in greater depth. Students of composition, Schoenberg scholars, music theorists, and historians of music theory alike will no doubt welcome this new edition of Schoenberg's classic composition syllabus.

Book The Works of Arnold Schoenberg

Download or read book The Works of Arnold Schoenberg written by Josef Rufer and published by London : Faber and Faber. This book was released on 1962 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliographical presentation of all the works of Arnold Schoenberg. What Kochel and Einstein did for Mozart, this author has done for Schoenberg. He has had access to Schoenberg's papers and scrupulously catalogued the legacy of the composer who has been described as the father of the new music of the twentieth century. Schoenberg's published and unpublished works, his editions and arrangements, his sketches and drafts, are meticulously documented in chronological sequence within clearly defined groups. In many cases, we can trace the composition of a work from its first stages to its ultimate shape. Letters in which Schoenberg himself has things to say about a particular work form part of the author's text. Thu the voice of the composer is heard throughout the book. Schoenberg was a many-sided artist and the author has not neglected to list his literary works, his many books and articles, and his remarkable paintings. For the student of Schoenberg, this book is an indispensable source of information. But its appeal is also much wider. From so fully illustrated a catalogue of works, there emerges an amazingly faithful portrait of the man and his music. As one moves from one historic composition to another - Pierrot lunaire, the five orchestral pieces, Moses and Aaron, a vivid impression is given of history in the making.

Book excerpt: This book is full of essays which Arnold Schoenberg wrote on style and idea. He talks about the relationship to the text, new and outmoded music, composition in twelve tones, entertaining through composing, the relationship of heart and mind in music, evaluation of music, and other essays. Arnold Schoenberg (13 September 1874 - 13 July 1951) was an Austrian and later American composer, associated with the expressionist movement in German poetry and art, and leader of the Second Viennese School. He used the spelling Schönberg until after his move to the United States in 1934 (Steinberg 1995, 463), "in deference to American practice" (Foss 1951, 401), though one writer claims he made the change a year earlier (Ross 2007, 45). Schoenberg was known early in his career for successfully extending the traditionally opposed German Romantic traditions of both Brahms and Wagner, and later and more notably for his pioneering innovations in atonality. During the rise of the Nazi party in Austria, his music was labeled, alongside swing and jazz, as degenerate art. In the 1920s, he developed the twelve-tone technique, a widely influential compositional method of manipulating an ordered series of all twelve notes in the chromatic scale. He also coined the term developing variation, and was the first modern composer to embrace ways of developing motifs without resorting to the dominance of a centralized melodic idea. Schoenberg's approach, both in terms of harmony and development, is among the major landmarks of 20th century musical thought; at least three generations of composers in the European and American traditions have consciously extended his thinking and, in some cases, passionately reacted against it. Schoenberg was also a painter, an important music theorist, and an influential teacher of composition; his students included Alban Berg, Anton Webern, Hanns Eisler, and later John Cage, Lou Harrison, Earl Kim, Wayne Barlow, and many other prominent musicians. Many of Schoenberg's practices, including the formalization of compositional method, and his habit of openly inviting audiences to think analytically, are echoed in avant-garde musical thought throughout the 20th century. His often polemical views of music history and aesthetics were crucial to many of the 20th century's significant musicologists and critics, including Theodor Adorno, Charles Rosen, and Carl Dahlhaus. Schoenberg's archival legacy is collected at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna.

Book Speechsong

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Cavell
  • Publisher : punctum books

  • Pages : 155 pages

Download or read book Speechsong written by Richard Cavell and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2020 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speechsong is a work of imaginative musicology that addresses the engimas of Schoenberg and Gould, of singing and speaking, of Moses und Aron, of technology and being. Its point of departure is Gould's last public performance, given at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, where a number of Schoenberg's works were performed during his California exile. It is here, after that last performance, that Gould encounters a spectral Schoenberg in a staged conversation that explores Schoenberg's travails in rethinking the fundamentals of Western music. This first part of Speechsong recalls Schoenberg's operatic masterpiece, Moses und Aron, in which the divinely inspired Moses seeks the help of his brother to relate his vision: Moses speaks and Aron sings. Written as a twelve-tone composition, the opera produces an involution of harmonics that was Schoenberg's response to Richard Wagner's diatribes about synagogue noise. For Gould, Schoenberg's is a formalist revolution; Schoenberg's life, however, suggests that it was a search for personal and political freedom. The second half of Speechsong is a critical essay in twelve "moments" that re-articulates the staged conversation as an inquiry into the intersections of music and mediation. Gould's turn to the recording studio emerges as a post-humanist inquiry into recorded music as a repudiation of the virtuoso tradition and a liberation from unitary notions of selfhood. Schoenberg's exodus from musical tradition likewise takes his twelve-tone invention beyond musical performance, where it emerges, along with Gould's soundscapes, as a prototype of acoustic installations by artists such as Stephen Prina and Cory Arcangel. In these works, music abandons the concert hall and the exigencies of harmony for an acoustic space that embraces at once the recordings of Gould and the performances of Schoenberg that have found their home on the internet. Richard Cavell has written extensively on Marshall McLuhan and on media theory generally. He is the co-founder of the Media Studies program at the University of British Columbia and the curator of the website Spectres of McLuhan. Speechsong, his second critical performance piece, was preceded by Marinetti Dines with the High Command (2014).
