Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Donald Francis Tovey was born in 1875, Donald Francis Tovey was a British musicologist and composer. He took classical honors with his B.A. at Oxford in 1898, and became a pianist of the first rank, though he never sought a virtuoso career. This book contains all the articles which Tovey wrote for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, as they now appear there, with the exception of one on 'Modern Music' and the biographies. The book was set up from printed slips, and thus follows the text finally approved and corrected by the author. The very long musical examples are printed in full. In book form, a few minor alterations have been necessary, mostly in the excising of references, and the bringing of the 'printer's style' into line with that of Tovey's other books. An occasional slip in the musical examples has been corrected.

Book Great Musicians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Great Musicians Classic Reprint written by Ernest Oldmeadow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Musicians To be querulous over so serviceable a work may seem ungracious, and yet one cannot help regretting that, instead of attempting to mend some of the old articles, the Editor has not replaced them by new ones. For instance, the article on Palestrina, in Volume [i], lags years behind the latest results of Palestrina scholarship, while the sentence added, in square brackets, respecting Palestrina's second marriage, is so placed as to suggest (unintentionally, no doubt) a joke in very poor taste. Book The Story of Music and Musicians for Young Readers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Music and Musicians for Young Readers Classic Reprint written by Lucy Cecil Lillie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Music and Musicians for Young Readers The only necessity for a preface to this little book is to explain that the work is not designed to take the place of text-books, works on harmony or thorough-bass, or those interesting lives of the great musicians which competent writers have given to us. Its object is only to interest young students in music in the technique of their art, andin the associations amid which great masters have worked. Only such rules of harmony are given as have a direct bearing upon the subject or composition under dis cussion, and these I have presented, after comparing them with standard authorities, in as simple a fashion as possi ble, relying upon any reader who is a thoughtful student progressing to technical study under a scientific instructor. Meanwhile some impetus and enthusiasm may be added, from reading this simple story of an art which all nations are in some fashion developing to-day, and which had its origin in an age that gave a significance to the victor crown of bay-leaves and laurel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story-Lives of Great Musicians Following the plan of his previous volume of Great Authors, the writer has here endeavoured to weave into more or less story form a few of the facts and incidents in the lives of some great musicians. It is hoped that young readers - and especially those to whom music is a subject of study - will take a greater interest in some of the masterpieces of composition when they have learnt something about the composers themselves, and the circumstances under which they wrote. The author desires to express his acknowledgments for the assistance he has derived from the following works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Music and Musicians There are many who will be inclined to deny that programme music has a history at all, or at any rate one worth writing, but as a matter of fact the idea that music is capable Of any but an abstract use is far Older than is generally supposed. Nearly four hundred years ago, at a time when music, from our point of view, was barely articulate, Sir Thomas More wrote Of his Utopians: For all their music, both that they play upon instruments and that they sing with man's voice, doth so resemble and express natural affections, the sound and tune is so applied and made agreeable to the thing, that whether it be a prayer or else a ditty of gladness, of patience, of trouble, Of mourning or Of anger, the fashion Of the melody doth so represent the meaning Of the thing, that it doth wonderfully move, stir, pierce and inflame the hearers' minds. Book The Great Composers Or Stories of the Lives of Eminent Musicians Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great Composers Or Stories of the Lives of Eminent Musicians Classic Reprint written by C. E. Bourne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Composers, or Stories of the Lives of Eminent Musicians The personal life of some great men, apart from the books they wrote, the machines they invented, the doctrines they taught, or the discoveries they made, is often hardly worth the telling, and there is even nobility in the self effacing thought that some have uttered, Remember my work, if you will, but let myself be forgotten.' But there are other great men, and all those to whom the name of artists is now applied, belong to this class, whose work, appealing as it does to the emotions, is itself peculiarly the product (if it is their work at all) of the emotional part of the man - he lives and works and rules in the wide field of the spiritual and the ideal, and without exception, the lives of such men, being so closely related to their work that the one can hardly exist or be understood without the other, never fail to be interesting and full of what we call 'romance' interwoven with everything they conceived, achieved, or were foiled in. And especially, it seems to me, is this true of all the great musicians who have lived. In studying their lives, from Mozart to Mendelssohn, I have found the peculiar sensitiveness to pleasure and pain, the over owing in all their life - ln their words and their work - of their keen delight in living and in the wonderful and beautiful world, which with eyes sometimes even bewildered with the sight of the loveliness that to others perhaps seems but a mere arrangement of colour or odd murmur of confused sounds, they are never tired of gazing on and having a part in - the true sign of the poet, be he a worker in words, tones, or colours And to show some thing of this life without pretension or learned disquisition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Musicians That the purpose1 of the public schools is the training of children for a higher citizenship, a more extensive helpfulness in affairs pertaining to the com mon good, no one questions; but we need expect no manifestation of a greater integrity, unless lofty ideals are kept constantly before them. Neither painter nor sculptor can produce a greater expres sion of beauty than that which has been built up in his own consciousness no individual can produce a greater expression of manhood or womanhood than that which he holds in his own mind. It is impor tant, therefore, that a high standard be set for the children in our schools to-day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musical Reminiscences and Impressions I had materials of sufficient interest at my disposal. I had not, however, written many pages, before I began to live again in the past. Incidents which i I had almost forgotten came before me as vividly as if they had occurred but yesterday. I saw, in imagination, the faces and figures of musicians, the lives and doings of whom the younger generations read as matters of musical history. For me, whilst penning my recollections, these musicians of the past were just as present as they were years ago when I was holding converse with them, or when I saw them at the festival or concert in which they were taking part. Some of these celebrities still live in their works, and are thus in a manner present amongst us; but the great singers and the world famed executants I have written about are, for the most part, but a name to those who have not had the privilege, as I had, of hearing them. The voice of many a celebrated singer of bygone days still rings in my ears, although now for ever mute. I.
