Book A Priceless Legacy

Download or read book A Priceless Legacy written by Cynthia Joy Hausmann and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Hausmann reminisces with justifiable contentment on the life he's carved out for himself in nineteenth-century Bavaria. By the time he is writing to his children, he has already served honorably in the infantry-surviving the disastrous 1812 march into Russia as part of Napoleon's Grande Armée-obtained a university degree in government, and earned universal respect in his current career as an increasingly important royal counselor. A Priceless Legacy offers a collection of his poignant letters showing how Franz devoted all his spare energy to educating his eleven children-sending them to the best schools he can afford, penning words of advice to be kept as reference, and always encouraging them to become self-reliant, honorable, and devout members of society. Mostly leaving the girls to his wife's care, Franz focuses on the boys. They cause him many headaches and heartaches, but he calmly-and sternly-tries to steer them in the right direction. Franz's great-granddaughter Cynthia Joy Hausmann has translated these letters and provided useful background comments. After Franz's death in 1856, much of Europe went through a period of political and economic upheaval, causing half of Franz's children to seek their fortune in the United States, where their descendants still exemplify Franz's wise legacy. Portrait of Franz Hausmann as a civilian official, ca. 1830. He still proudly displays the red ribbon and white cross of the French Legion of Honor, which Napoleon awarded him in 1812

Book The Band

Download or read book The Band written by Craig Harris and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes previously unpublished interviews and photos: “His research is extensive, but the overall pace through these two hundred pages is breezy and entertaining.” —Vintage Rock At a time when acid rock and heavy metal dominated popular music, The Band rebelled against the rebellion with tight ensemble arrangements, masterful musicianship, highly literate lyrics, and a respect for the musical traditions of the American South. Comprised of Canadians Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson, and Arkansas-born Levon Helm, The Band sparked a new appreciation for America’s musical roots, fusing R&B, jump blues, country, folk, boogie-woogie, swing, Cajun, New Orleans-style jazz, and rock, and setting the foundations for the Americana that would take hold thirty years later. The Band: Pioneers of Americana Music explores the diverse influences on the quintet’s music, and the impact that their music had in turn on contemporary music and American society. Through previously unpublished interviews with Robbie Robertson, Eric Andersen, Pete Seeger, and the late Rick Danko, as well as numerous other sources, Craig Harris surveys The Band’s musical journey from sidemen for, among others, Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan to rock legends in their own right. Touching on the evolution of rock and roll, the electrifying of folk music, unionism, the Civil Rights Movement, changes in radio formatting, shifting perceptions of the American South, and the commercializing of the counterculture, as well as drug dependency, alcoholism, suicide, greed, and the struggle against cancer, Harris takes readers from The Band’s groundbreaking albums, Music from Big Pink and The Band, through their final releases and solo recordings, as well as their historic appearances at Woodstock, the Isle of Wight Festival (with Dylan), Watkins Glen (with the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead), and the filmed final concert known as the Last Waltz (with an all-star cast). Sixteen previously unpublished photographs, by the author, are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Child Ballads are a series of over 300 traditional ballads from England and Scotland that, along with their American variants, were anthologized by folklorist Francis James Child in the nineteenth century. An Evolving Tradition is the story of the Child Ballads—the world’s best-known and most highly regarded repository of traditional English folk songs, and the wellspring for approximately 10,000 recordings over the last century, from obscure musicological archives to classic releases from Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Led Zeppelin. Drawing on interviews with numerous scholars and musicians, author Dave Thompson explains what a ballad is, outlines their dominant themes, and recounts how these ballads survived to become a mainstay of field recordings made by Cecil Sharp, Alan Lomax, and others as they traveled the English and American countryside in search of old songs. Thompson traverses the entire spectrum of rock, pop, folk, roots, experimental music, industrial, and goth to reveal the remarkable legacy and incalculable influence of the Child Ballads on all manner of modern music.

Book Swing Sing and All That Jazz

Download or read book Swing Sing and All That Jazz written by Henry Holloway and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from being one of just two non-Americans in history to be honoured with Americas prestigious Golden Bandstand Award, South African broadcaster, Henry Holloways remarkable impact on American light music during his 40 years on the air, internationally, is told in this book, in words and pictures. Holloways dozens of long-running radio series on American music legends are jewels, in addition to his regular series, Swing, Sing and All That Jazz, the title of which clearly depicts Henrys penchant for that genre. His relentless pursuit to perpetuate the best from the Golden Age has prompted remarkable responses from music legends like Artie Shaw, Buddy DeFranco, Sammy Cahn, Professor Paul Tanner, Neal Hefti, Steve Allen, Bob Crosby, Les Brown, Milt Bernhart and Ray Evans, to mention but a few of many. His Golden Bandstand Award, invitations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Society Of Singers, the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, setting world records with his 60 hours radio series on Les Brown in 2001 and his 115 programmes on Glenn Miller in 2004/06, lectures on luxury cruise liners, broadcasting on the BBC, being interviewed on television and by the press in the USA; these and many other highlights are encapsulated on a first-hand basis in this remarkable autobiography by a unique South African.
