Download or read book Diversity Equity Accessibility and Inclusion in Museums written by Johnnetta Betsch Cole and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all aspects of museums’ structure and programming are top issues in the field today – and in the overall arts/culture sector. Much has been written, from various perspectives, over several decades. Yet, a lack of diversity remains and exclusive practices and inequities persist in all types of museums. A go-to resource for readers interested in learning about diversity and inclusion work in the field – past, present and future. This edited collection of the most important essays, speeches, and reports on these topics seeks to facilitate a much-needed intergenerational dialogue that builds on lessons from the past, broadens thinking about the many different facets of this complex work, and ignites inspiration for continuing to correct inequities across museums of all types, sizes, and locations. In this book compiled and edited by Dr. Johnnetta Betch Cole, who has served as both director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and as the president of both historically Black colleges for women in the United States, Spelman College and Bennett College (a distinction she alone holds) and Laura Lott, president and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums, (the first woman to the lead the organization), thought leaders in the museum field present their research, analysis and work to answer some of the most challenge questions facing the museum field. Why do these problems persist? How can a new generation of museum leaders champion change to better represent the communities that museums strive to serve and engage? What can we learn from those who have been observing, experiencing, and writing about these issues?

Book Transforming Inclusion in Museums

Download or read book Transforming Inclusion in Museums written by Porchia Moore and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inclusion” is a word, a concept, a value, a set of practices, but what should it mean for museum staff and leaders as they envision new ways of being a museum in an emergent future? Political and environmental upheavals, and now a global pandemic, are transforming the museum landscape forever. How can our paradigm for understanding inclusion continue to transform as well? This book offers a new paradigm for understanding inclusion grounded in a retrospective of museum worker efforts to test the limits of inclusion, a reflection on inclusion’s advantages and limitations in practice, as well as the integral concerns of racial equity and social justice. Questions throughout the book invite readers to reflect on how their own experiences can add to, and expand on, new ways of thinking about inclusion in museums. Museum workers and lovers can use this book as a tool for engaging with “inclusion” anew, and as a terrain for collaborative inquiry and world-building that can help us imagine and realize new potential for museums in the future.

Book An Examination of Social Inclusion Understanding and Application Among Museum Professionals

Download or read book An Examination of Social Inclusion Understanding and Application Among Museum Professionals written by Rachel Duke and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do museums create space for everyone? Museums hold significant cultural importance and should utilize inclusive practices to ensure they serve their entire audience. However, there hasn't been recent research in the field to bridge the gap of having a clear understanding of social inclusion. This research project seeks to discover how museums can become more accessible and welcoming to diverse audiences. The specific questions answered by this research include: (1) What does "social inclusion" mean for museums from the perspective of museum professionals? (2) How do museum professionals perceive the degree of social inclusivity within their institutions? and (3) What socially inclusive practices are applied by museum professionals at their institutions? To answer these questions, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted through interviews with museum professionals across various in the United States. Through this research, we identified perceptions related to what it means to be socially included and critical elements necessary for an organization to foster social inclusivity. Furthermore, this research highlighted commonalities among various programs and practices employed by different organizations to incorporate principles of social inclusion into their programming and operations. Museums are undergoing a significant transformation, transitioning from artifact guardians to dynamic educational institutions with a strong emphasis on promoting positive societal change through unbiased information sharing. This shift in focus is of paramount importance as it reflects how museums perceive and adapt to their roles today. Additionally, the research has highlighted three key components that museum professionals prioritize for achieving social inclusion: sustainable stewardship of cultural heritage to ensure equitable access, presenting information without bias to encourage open dialogue and understanding, and creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for all visitors. These insights provide a deeper understanding of the evolving roles and responsibilities of museums and shed light on their commitment to fostering social inclusion within their institutions. By finding tangible solutions for creating genuinely inclusive environments in the nation's cultural centers, we may open opportunities for all people to fully engage with history and culture.

Book Crafting Museum Social Media for Social Inclusion Work

Download or read book Crafting Museum Social Media for Social Inclusion Work written by CASSANDRA. KIST and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2024-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crafting Museum Social Media for Social Inclusion Work investigates if and how social media can be integrated into the social inclusion initiatives of museums, and the contextual factors that impact this integration. Drawing on a year-long case study of Glasgow Museums (Scotland), international mini case studies, and interviews with museum professionals, Kist reveals the complex social and technical negotiations that staff participate in to align social media practices with social inclusion work. Kist argues that the staff practices she observed around social media can be usefully understood through the idea of 'craft'. This reframes staff practices for imagining future museum social media work as iterative, intuitive, and skilled balancing acts. As a craft, staff creatively draw on and work around social media affordances to balance the norms of their social inclusion work with the perceived interests and needs of users and community groups. Kist argues that understanding the relation between museums' use of social media and their ability to contribute to social inclusion initiatives is imperative, especially given the increasingly pervasive use of social media across the cultural heritage sector in recent years. Crafting Museum Social Media for Social Inclusion Work will be valuable for academics, practitioners, and students working in cultural heritage, museum studies, or social work.

Book Museums Social Inclusion and Online Networks

Download or read book Museums Social Inclusion and Online Networks written by Angelina Russo and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years an increasing number of museums have experimented with social media to demonstrate that they are listening and engaging in the world outside. While a number of new publications describe the rise of social media as a potential panacea for dwindling audiences, this book is unique in its recognition that participation has not, for the most part, affected the majority of museum practices. Participation programs have certainly been introduced to a number of museums and as this book will show, some have been tremendously successful. Yet, for the most part, participation has been limited and the bulk of engagement has tended to be around new forms of publication from within rather than discussions with diverse audiences. Based on research conducted with international museums over the past 6 years, this book explores three key areas: engagement, participation, and co-creation as the keystones for understanding the value of the "social" museum. Using a number of global examples to describe and map the ways in which social media has been explored within communication programs, authors Russo and Kelly offer a window into the challenges which face future communication strategies and curatorial practices within museums. This book develops models for new partnerships, based on critical analysis of both the impact of social media and evaluations of some of the most successful examples in the sector to date. In this way new essential lessons for museum professionals, museum studies students, and potential collaborators are made accessible.
