Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, Scripps College in association with Getty Publications This richly illustrated exhibition catalogue features photographs by three Mexican women, each representing a different generation, who have explored and stretched notions of Mexican identity in works that range from the documentary to the poetic. Revolution and Ritual looks first at the images of Sara Castrejón (1888–1962), the woman photographer who most thoroughly captured the Mexican Revolution. The work of photographic luminary Graciela Iturbide (born 1942) sheds light on Mexico’s indigenous cultures. Finally, the self-portraits of Tatiana Parcero (born 1967) splice images of her body with cosmological maps and Aztec codices, echoing Mexico’s layered and contested history. By bringing their work into conversation, Revolution and Ritual invites readers to consider how Mexican photography has been transformed over the past century.

Book Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia

Download or read book Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia written by Carlos Garrido Castellano and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining postcolonial studies, curating and contemporary art, this book surveys the role played by artistic curatorship and contemporary art museums in the shaping of identities and cultural planning in contemporary Iberia. The book’s main hypothesis is that contemporary art has been pivotal in the construction of contemporary Iberia, a process marked by the attention paid (in heterogeneous, not always satisfactory ways) to the entanglement of the legacies of colonialism and the present-day status of Iberian territories as cosmopolitan societies now integrated in the European Union. We argue that, at least from the 1990s, curating emerged as a key activity for Iberian societies to display and configure an image of themselves as modern and fully integrated in the European cultural landscape. Such an image, however, had to cope with the legacies of colonialism and the profound socioeconomic transformations of these societies. This book is concerned with bringing together, while redefining and expanding, Iberian and curatorial studies.

Book excerpt: This anthology contains the original manifestos of 50 women artists/feminist groups/feminist protests. Introductory essay by Katy Deepwell, with notes on each manifesto. A print edition of this book is available from KT press. What is a manifesto? A political programme, a declaration, a definitive statement of belief. Neither institutional mission statement, nor religious dogma; neither a poem, nor a book. As a form of literature, manifestos occupy a specific place in the history of public discourse as a means to communicate radical ideas. Distributed as often ephemeral documents, as leaflets or pamphlets in political campaigns or as announcements of the formation of new parties or new avant-gardes, manifestos above all declare what its authors are for and against, and ask people who read them to join them, to understand, to share these ideas. The feminist art manifestos in this anthology do all of these things as they explore the potential and possibilities of women's cultural production as visual artists. Manifestos by: Yvonne Rainer - Mierle Laderman Ukeles - Agnes Denes - Michele Wallace - Nancy Spero - Monica Sjoo and Anne Berg - Rita Mae Brown - VALIE EXPORT - Carolee Schneemann - Feminist Film and Video Organisations - Klonaris and Thomadaki - Kate Walker - Z.Budapest, U.Rosenbach, S.B.A.Coven - Ewa Partum - Women Artists of Pakistan - Chila Burman - Gisela Breitling - Riot Grrl - EVA and Co. - VNS MATRIX - Xu Hong - Violetta Liagatchev - OLD BOYS NETWORK - Lily Bea Moor - Dora Garcia - SubRosa - ORLAN - Rhani Lee Remedes - Factory of Found Clothes - Feminist Art Action Brigade - Mette Ingvartsen – ARCO - YES!

Book The Photograph as Contemporary Art Fourth World of Art

Download or read book The Photograph as Contemporary Art Fourth World of Art written by Charlotte Cotton and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of the definitive title in the field of contemporary art photography by one of the world’s leading experts on the subject, Charlotte Cotton. In the twenty-first century, photography has come of age as a contemporary art form. Almost two centuries after photographic technology was first invented, the art world has fully embraced it as a legitimate medium, equal in status to painting and sculpture. The Photograph as Contemporary Art introduces the extraordinary range of contemporary art photography, from portraits of intimate life to highly staged directorial spectacles. Arranged thematically, the book reproduces work from a vast span of photographers, including Andreas Gursky, Barbara Kasten, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman, Deana Lawson, Diana Markosian, Elle Pérez, Gregory Halpern, Lieko Shiga, Nan Goldin, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Pixy Liao, Susan Meiselas, and Zanele Muholi. This fully revised and updated new edition revitalizes previous discussion of works from the 2000s through dialogue with more recent practice. Alongside previously featured work, Charlotte Cotton celebrates a new generation of artists who are shaping photography as a culturally significant medium for our current sociopolitical climate. A superb resource, The Photograph as Contemporary Art is a uniquely broad and diverse reflection of the field.

Book Emergencies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rafael Doctor Roncero
  • Publisher : Actar
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Emergencies written by Rafael Doctor Roncero and published by Actar. This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Emergencies collects work relating to Alfredo Jaar's Emergency, or to its call for attention to the developing world. From Tony Oursler's Boot to Anri Sala's Dammi i Colori, the works presented here were gathered together for the inaugural exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Castilla y Le*n, which opened in Le*n, Spain, in 2005. MUSAC's agenda, above and beyond collecting contemporary art, is the establishment of a dialogue with the public about everyday events that affect and threaten human sensibility. Emergencies documents that collecting, and is also a platform for the expression of the artists' and the museum's utopian hopes, as well as a stage for the fight between injustice and artists' dreams. To that end, each section of this dense, well-designed volume lists further reading on the artistic and political topics covered--government, nonprofit and reference addresses to turn to for more information in addition to web sites of interest.

Book excerpt: The new Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla and Le*n, opened in Spain in 2005 with an exhibition of Alfredo Jaar's Emergency, a dark pool from which a fiberglass model of the African continent is constantly, slowly rising and resubmerging. This revised and expanded black book of essays--whose back cover leads to black endpapers and black title pages--extends Jaar's piece with reflections on the continent from such brilliant African writers as Ama Ata Aidoo (of Ghana, via Stanford University's creative writing program), Buchi Emecheta (of Nigeria and London), Nawal el Saadawi (Egypt's onetime Director of Public Health, the only woman ever to achieve such a position), and Nuruddin Farah (a novelist exiled from Somalia).
