Book Entertainment Journalism and Advocacy

Download or read book Entertainment Journalism and Advocacy written by Lindsey A. Sherrill and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Lindsey A. Sherrill explores the exponential growth of true crime podcasting, including the role of the ubiquitous Serial podcast in the growth of the industry. Using both demographic population analysis and interviews with podcast hosts and producers, Sherill demonstrates that true crime podcasts exist as hybrid organizations, with diverse goals ranging from entertainment to criminal justice reform advocacy to journalistic inquiry. These competing motivations of podcast producers are explored, along with the ethical quandaries that emerge in the process of telling true crime stories. Sherrill traces true crime podcasting back to the infancy of the medium and examines the influences, innovations, and events that created the true crime podcast ecosystem, as well as its influence on real cases in the United States. Scholars of communication, sociology, and media studies will find this book of particular interest.

Book excerpt: Cyrus is a genius child brimming with talent with a bright future, loving parents, and a younger sister he adores. But on his thirteenth birthday, everything changed. Emerging from a coma, he finds the world irrevocably altered, haunted by the memory of his parents' murder. His screams for his sister are met with confinement, and the boy he once was faded to grey, replaced by someone cold, consumed with revenge. This book is a raw, visceral journey through the eyes of a psychopath serial killer, an exploration of the darkest corners of human nature where the thrill of the hunt and the complexity of the human mind are laid bare in their most primal ways. Cyrus is a creature carved from vengeance and pain. His life, a relentless quest for retribution, blurs the lines between justice and brutality. Each step he takes is an opus of violence, pulling him deeper into a world where the lines between predator and prey are erased. This book invites readers to a chilling realm where psychopathy and serial killings are not just actions but reflections of the soul's deepest, most hidden fissures. It's a world where the quest for vengeance becomes a labyrinth of moral ambiguity, and the possibility of redemption is as elusive as the darkness in which Cyrus dwells. This is more than a tale of revenge; it's a haunting portrait of humanity's most profound dilemmas, painted in shades as dark as the night itself.

Book Identity Narcissism and the Other

Download or read book Identity Narcissism and the Other written by Jean Arundale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practitioners of psychoanalysis find three central themes to be recurrent and ubiquitous in every analysis; firstly, issues around identity, the struggle to know the self, to understand the self and to be the self in an authentic way. Intricately entangled with self-identity is the problem of narcissism, essentially viewed as a defensive retreat to a mental state characterized by an unconscious belief in the special value of the self and the diminution of the Other. However, there are a multitude of inherent anxieties involved in close and intimate relationships. As Freud pointed out, even in our most intimate relationships there is an element of hostility. Threats to both the self and other, and various anxieties around libidinal contact, will be examined in this book using case material, and the relationship between these three important themes, identity, narcissism and the other, separate but interconnected, will be explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A haunting and theatrical one-woman play, The Way She Spoke travels from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juárez, Mexico, where thousands of women have been murdered in an epidemic of violence that has yet to stop. Written by Isaac Gómez based on his intimate interviews, the play is a raw and riveting exploration of responsibility: one playwright's journey to give voice to a city of women silenced by violence, fear and a world that has turned a deaf ear to their stories. "An act of bearing witness... an aching, outraged work of vigil, protest and inquiry." - The New York Times "Isaac Gomez has drawn from interviews with real women to expose just how terrifying life in Juárez has become. It is riveting theater... Gomez's script is a brilliant, tragic book of the dead." - New York Theatre Guide "At first, the terrific solo show The Way She Spoke seems simple... Gomez's play picks its way carefully among genres: It's half memoir, half fiction, half documentary, half memorial. That's too many halves-there's too much play here. But that's because there is no appropriate response other than surfeit of anguish, of pity, of rage." - TimeOut NY

Book excerpt: Like many “language buffs,” I recall no time when my world was without words. It was my fortunate lot to follow their beguiling tunes until toys turned into tools, and I became a wordsmith—writer and teacher. The essays in this book are digressions on the light side of that career, a continuing game of word play, a motley cluster of errant shots with my grammar wedge, the twists and turns of things on the tip of my tongue.

Book The Red Widow

Book excerpt: "An unforgettable portrait of a woman who became one of the most notorious figures of her day and whose scandalous story sheds fascinating light not only on her own tumultuous time but ours as well." — Harold Schechter, author of Hell's Princess: The Mystery of Belle Guinness, Butcher of Men Sex, corruption, and power: the rise and fall of the Red Widow of Paris Paris, 1889: Margeurite Steinheil is a woman with ambition. But having been born into a middle-class family and trapped in a marriage to a failed artist twenty years her senior, she knows her options are limited. Determined to fashion herself into a new woman, Meg orchestrates a scandalous plan with her most powerful resource: her body. Amid the dazzling glamor, art, and romance of bourgeois Paris, she takes elite men as her lovers, charming her way into the good graces of the rich and powerful. Her ambitions, though, go far beyond becoming the most desirable woman in Paris; at her core, she is a woman determined to conquer French high society. But the game she plays is a perilous one: navigating misogynistic double-standards, public scrutiny, and political intrigue, she is soon vaulted into infamy in the most dangerous way possible. A real-life femme fatale, Meg influences government positions and resorts to blackmail—and maybe even poisoning—to get her way. Leaving a trail of death and disaster in her wake, she earns the name the "Red Widow" for mysteriously surviving a home invasion that leaves both her husband and mother dead. With the police baffled and the public enraged, Meg breaks every rule in the bourgeois handbook and becomes the most notorious woman in Paris. An unforgettable true account of sex, scandal, and murder, The Red Widow is the story of a woman determined to rise—at any cost.

Book Who Killed Buster

Download or read book Who Killed Buster written by Edward Bufala and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-01-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are reading this now, you have the book I have written in your hands. If you choose to read this book you will actually be reading two stories, both stories are true. Remember that old cliché that the truth is sometimes stranger than fiction? Well this just happens to be stranger than fiction. You can’t make this stuff up. Part one of my story is about Buster’s life. And it was a rough start, almost from day one, which was November 2°”, 1942. It was if he was angry from his very first day on this earth. Starting with his eviction from l grade to his unsuccessful one day attendance at a Catholic school, to his one year stay at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital for Rheumatic Fever, which left him with heart damage, I’d say that was a rough start, wouldn’t you? Some may have described Buster as an angry, troubled young boy. That couldn’t be farther from the truth I decided later on that Buster wasn’t angry at all. He was just always trying to prove that he could be anythkg that he wanted to be. The fact was that he knew what he wanted to be at a very young age, he knew how he planned to get there, and he was determined to achieve his goals at any cost and no one was going to stop him. I talk about Buster’s family and friends and how they may have influenced or had an impact on his life decisions, which ultimately led to his untimely death on October 8th, 1976. Part two of my book is the bizarre part of his story. If you don’t find part one interesting enough, I suggest that you skip to part two. I guarantee you’ll find it more interesting. There are several rumors as to why someone thought Buster had to die, we just don’t know which is true or if there could be another reason that we don’t know about. His young widowed wife Carol has spun many tales over the past years and truthfully we don’t know what is true and what is a product of her imagination. She has told us about who the killers are and how the killers themselves end up murdered. She tells us how crooked the Las Vegas detectives investigating the murder are and how they try to implicate her own family. This goes on for over 30 years and we still don’t know the truth. After reading this story, you can decide for yourself what is true and what is not, if you choose to. The problem is, unless you were there, you will have the same problem that I have to this day. I don’t know why he had to die and I don’t know who did it.
