Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a sweltering August night in 1876, Methodist minister William England, his wife, Selena, and two of her children were brutally slaughtered in their North Texas home. Acting on Selena’s deathbed testimony, a neighbor, his brother-in-law, and a friend were arrested and tried for the murders. Murder in Montague tells the story of this gruesome crime and its murky aftermath. In this engrossing blend of true crime reporting, social drama, and legal history, author Glen Sample Ely presents a vivid snapshot of frontier justice and retribution in Texas following the Civil War. The sheer brutality of the Montague murders terrified settlers already traumatized by decades of chaos, violence, and fear—from the deadly raids of Comanche and Kiowa Indians to the terrors of vigilantes, lynchings, and Reconstruction lawlessness. But the crime's aftermath—involving five Texas governors, five trials at Montague and Gainesville, five appeals to the Texas Court of Appeals, and three life sentences at hard labor in the state's abominable and inhumane prison system—offered little in the way of reassurance or resolution. Viewed from any perspective, the 1876 England family murders were both a human tragedy and a miscarriage of justice. Combining the long view of history and the intimate detail of true crime reporting, Murder in Montague deftly captures this moment of reckoning in the story of Texas, as vigilante justice grudgingly gave way to an established system of law and order.

Firefighter Paul Clouse continues to work on the hotel as a designer, though things have changed, and he struggles daily to forget the friends he's lost. The beautiful landmark is now completely renovated, and ready for a grand opening, which is doomed before it even begins. Clouse himself becomes the first target of a new, more vicious killer, who brings a greater mystery with him. It soon becomes apparent the hotel harbors deep secrets that trace back to the mysterious Father Ernest and the Jesuits who once resided there. With a new, dark group known only as the Coven threatening their lives, the remaining survivors from the previous year piece together a mystery that may very well have begun during the hotel's original construction. One by one they fall, but with each drop of blood spilled on the hotel's grounds, it reveals another clue necessary to solve the killer's scheme.

Book The Death Penalty

Download or read book The Death Penalty written by Louis P. Pojman and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two distinguished social and political philosophers take opposing positions in this highly engaging work. Louis P. Pojman justifies the practice of execution by appealing to the principle of retribution: we deserve to be rewarded and punished according to the virtue or viciousness of our actions. He asserts that the death penalty does deter some potential murderers and that we risk the lives of innocent people who might otherwise live if we refuse to execute those deserving that punishment. Jeffrey Reiman argues that although the death penalty is a just punishment for murder, we are not morally obliged to execute murderers. Since we lack conclusive evidence that executing murderers is an effective deterrent and because we can foster the advance of civilization by demonstrating our intolerance for cruelty in our unwillingness to kill those who kill others, Reiman concludes that it is good in principle to avoid the death penalty, and bad in practice to impose it.

The sheriff's office and medical examiner have their hands full as they try to find logical explanations for the deaths. Detective Kate Pierce begins to show signs of physical distress whenever she's near the bodies, and further research leads her to believe she could be experiencing psychic transference-she's feeling the same symptoms these students did when they took their last breaths. Acton's hereditary estate was grand indeed, but there was something a bit off-putting about the grandeur, and all that tiresome peacefulness. After all, Trestles hadn't always been a peaceful sort of place; for hundreds of years, it had housed generation after generation who were consumed with ruthless ambition, and who were willing to sail very close to the wind, in their quest for material gain. Best to whisk Acton away, before this troublesome atmosphere seeped into his very bones. . . .

Book The Bisbee Massacre

  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Bisbee Massacre written by David Grassé and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1883, five outlaws attempted to rob the A.A. Castaneda Mercantile establishment in the fledgling mining town of Bisbee in the Arizona Territory. The robbery was a disaster: four citizens shot dead, one a pregnant woman. The failed heist was national news, with the subsequent manhunt, trial and execution of the alleged perpetrators followed by newspapers from New York to San Francisco. The Bisbee Massacre was as momentous as the infamous blood feud between the Earp brothers and the cowboys two years earlier, and led to the only recorded lynching in the town of Tombstone--John Heath, a sporting man, who was thought to be the mastermind. New research indicates he may have been innocent. This comprehensive history takes a fresh look at the event that marked the end of the Wild West period in the Arizona Territory.

Download or read book Punishment and Retribution written by Leo Zaibert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions of punishment typically assume that punishment is criminal punishment carried out by the State. Punishment is, however, a richer phenomenon and it occurs in many contexts. This book contains a general account of punishment which overcomes the difficulties of competing accounts. Recognizing punishment's manifoldness is valuable not merely in contributing to conceptual clarity, but in that this recognition sheds light on the complicated problem of punishment's justification. Insofar as they narrowly presuppose that punishment is criminal punishment, most apparent solutions to the tension between consequentialism and retributivism are rather unenlightening if we attempt to apply them in other contexts. Moreover, this presupposition has given rise to an unwieldy variety of accounts of retributivism which are less helpful in contexts other than criminal punishment. Treating punishment comprehensibly helps us to better understand how it differs from similar phenomena, and to carry on the discussion of its justification fruitfully.

Book excerpt: Retribution A Novel of Murder and Revenge George LaVigne's first novel is an irresistable page turner. Love or hate what's happening, you won;t be able to put it down. By all measures, Jack Latham was a lucky man. His loving wife and two young sons were the centerpiece of his American Dream. Then one night, his luck runs out. The senseless murder of his wife and sons leaves Jack a shattered man with just two feelings. One was rage that would drive him to do what had previously been unthinkable. The other was a certainty that the evil that destroyed his family would not go unpunished. Left to others, justice would be far too kind and far too slow. Left to jack, that would change. His journey begins with a woman who shares a common agony. Together they encounter people and places they never imagined, bound by a quest for justice at any cost- even their own lives. Whether you cheer for Jack or condemn him, Retribution will leave no doubt: There's nothing more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose.
