Book Murder on the Columbia Dredge

Download or read book Murder on the Columbia Dredge written by Pat Duggan and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2022 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What possible connection could there be between a dredge and an accountant from Seattle? This book is set in the picturesque town of Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. It is a favorite tourist destination for those who live in both Portland and Seattle, although it retains its small-town atmosphere. Its residents enjoy the active commercial fishing harbor, as well as the unique attractions of an Aquarium and the Pacific Coast Center. Each year the ocean currents move sand into the harbor entrance, creating a navigation problem for the fishing fleet residing in the port. In order to keep the channel open, the Columbia Dredge comes into Newport each year, to dredge the sand out of the channel. Accountant, Hazel Davies, and Chaplain, Anna Kohl, unexpectedly find themselves entangled in a murder mystery, which has the detective in charge completely stumped. Murder on the Columbia Dredge is the fourth mystery in this series.

Book Murder Scandal in Prohibition Portland

Download or read book Murder Scandal in Prohibition Portland written by JD Chandler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1917 election of Mayor George Luis Baker ushered a long era of unscrupulous greed into Portland government. While supposedly enforcing prohibition laws, Baker ordered police chief Leon Jenkins to control and profit from the bootlegging market. Baker filled city coffers and his friends' pockets with booze-soaked cash while sensational headlines like the 1929 affair between policeman Bill Breuning and informant Anna Schrader scandalized the city. Maligned in the press, Schrader executed a bitter campaign to recall the mayor. In 1933, a hired gunman murdered special investigator to the governor Frank Aiken a day before he would have filed a report on corruption in the city government. Authors JD Chandler and Theresa Griffin Kennedy unearth the salacious details of Baker's crooked administration in a revelatory account of prohibition in the Rose City.

Book excerpt: The New York Yacht Club's exclusive gathering at Newport, Rhode Island's Beacon Rock mansion hits stormy seas in the summer of 1900 when reporter Emma Cross, a lesser Vanderbilt, discovers a drowned corpse in Alyssa Maxwell's tenth Gilded Newport Mystery... As a reporter, Emma is used to covering Newport's social events. But this time she is appearing on the arm of her fiancé, Derrick Andrews, at a small but exclusive gathering of the New York Yacht Club at Beacon Rock, the Grecian-inspired summer "cottage" of Edwin and Elizabeth Morgan. The members--which include cousin and Yacht Club Commodore John Pierpoint Morgan and widow Lucy Carnegie, the first woman to be admitted to the Club--are there to discuss their strategy for the next America's Cup Challenge, to be held in New York Harbor the following summer. But it's Emma who must come up with a strategy when she discovers a woman's body bobbing against one of the hulls of the boats moored at the base of Beacon Rock. After the woman is identified as the missing daughter of a yacht designer, the police--with the exception of Emma's friend Detective Jesse Whyte--hastily conclude she is a suicide, perhaps to quiet any scandal for the Morgans. But Emma suspects the woman was murdered and begins to sort through a who's who of sportsmen, boat crews, and the Newport elite in search of a stone-cold killer . . .

Book The Redemption of Hattie McBride

Download or read book The Redemption of Hattie McBride written by Dawnelle Guenther and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bible, a battered suitcase, and dusty photos all point to a century-old crime. For Ed Janzen, these clues from a bygone era also dredge up a dark family secret. Was his Great Uncle Henry involved in the unsolved 1920 murder of Hattie McBride, the Madam of Coalmont? The Redemption of Hattie McBride weaves together historical facts and modern-day fiction as Ed and his wife Hannah try to unravel the truth about what happened in that British Columbia village, which once lured miners, ranchers, and grifters to the future “City of Destiny.” The author takes the reader back in time, deftly interspersing vividly rendered details and characters from 1914 to 1920—including McBride herself—with the present day. As Ed and Hannah tug on threads from the past, what becomes clear is that nothing is quite as it seems. The Redemption of Hattie McBride keeps you guessing until the end, while bringing to light the little-known story of Coalmont’s colourful heyday.
