A man is found murdered on the top of a London bus and another man writes to Scotland Yard that he is about to commit suicide by gas. How was the first man shot? Did the second man really commit suicide or was he murdered? These are the problems which Inspector Higgins, the ace detective of the Yard, sets about to solve. Soon he discovers that the two dead men were connected in underworld doings, and as the mystery deepens, the action intensifies. In fact, there is enough action and enough mystery for half a dozen detective stories. Higgins in the end gets his man, in one of the most surprising and unexpected climaxes ever devised in detective fiction. A New York literary critic recently called Inspector Higgins “the most human and likable detective since Sherlock Holmes,” and those who read “The Murder on the Bus” will agree with this verdict.

Book excerpt: Miss Withers investigates a man who appears to have hanged himself while driving As snow falls on the steps of the New York Public Library; a line of cars moves sluggishly down Fifth Avenue. Oblivious to the traffic, a blue Chrysler roadster tears down the street, hops the curb, and slams to a halt. The car is empty, its driver thrown half a block back. He is stone dead, his cigarette still burning, and a noose tied tight around his neck. First on the scene is Detective Oscar Piper, followed closely by Hildegarde Withers, a schoolmarm with more than a passing interest in crime. They are a close-knit pair, and would have been married by now if murder didn’t keep getting in the way. Piper and Miss Withers must race across New York, attempting to learn how a man can be hanged while driving, and to do whatever it takes to keep his twin from suffering the same fate. Murder on Wheels is part of the Hildegarde Withers Mysteries series, which also includes The Penguin Pool Murder and Murder on the Blackboard.

Book The Bus Stop Killer

  • Author : Geoffrey Wansell
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2011-07-28
  • ISBN : 0141968192
  • Pages : 275 pages

Download or read book The Bus Stop Killer written by Geoffrey Wansell and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You've seen Manhunt, now read Geoffrey Wansell's chilling portrait of notorious serial killer Levi Bellfield- the only man in modern British legal history to be given two whole-life sentences. On 23 Jun 2011 the convicted double-murderer Levi Bellfield was found guilty of the murder of 13-year-old school girl Milly Dowler. Milly disappeared on her way home from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey in 2002. Six months later her body was discovered many miles away. A massive police investigation, the largest manhunt in Surrey's history, got nowhere. Only when nightclub bouncer and bare-knuckle boxer Levi Bellfield was arrested for the murder of another young woman did it become clear to police that they had a serial killer on their hands. This is the full story of the murders, the victims and the pain-staking nine-year investigation and trial by police and prosecutors. It tells of Bellfield's terrifying, controlling personality - a man who went from charming to monstrous in the blink of an eye - and his depraved stalking of young women. Geoffrey Wansell has been acknowledged as one of Britain's leading authorities on serial killers. He was short-listed for the Whitbread Prize (now the Costa Book Award) for his biography of Terence Rattigan, and was appointed by the Official Solicitor to the Supreme Court to write the biography of Gloucester-based serial killer Frederick West.

Book excerpt: The riveting New York Times bestseller and Stonewall Book Award winner that will make you rethink all you know about race, class, gender, crime, and punishment. Artfully, compassionately, and expertly told, Dashka Slater's The 57 Bus is a must-read nonfiction book for teens that chronicles the true story of an agender teen who was set on fire by another teen while riding a bus in Oakland, California. Two ends of the same line. Two sides of the same crime. If it weren’t for the 57 bus, Sasha and Richard never would have met. Both were high school students from Oakland, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, but they inhabited different worlds. Sasha, a white teen, lived in the middle-class foothills and attended a small private school. Richard, a Black teen, lived in the economically challenged flatlands and attended a large public one. Each day, their paths overlapped for a mere eight minutes. But one afternoon on the bus ride home from school, a single reckless act left Sasha severely burned, and Richard charged with two hate crimes and facing life imprisonment. The case garnered international attention, thrusting both teenagers into the spotlight. But in The 57 Bus, award-winning journalist Dashka Slater shows that what might at first seem like a simple matter of right and wrong, justice and injustice, victim and criminal, is something more complicated—and far more heartbreaking. Awards and Accolades for The 57 Bus: A New York Times Bestseller Stonewall Book Award Winner YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Finalist A Boston Globe-Horn Book Nonfiction Honor Book Winner A TIME Magazine Best YA Book of All Time A Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist Don’t miss Dashka Slater’s newest propulsive and thought-provoking nonfiction book, Accountable: The True Story of a Racist Social Media Account and the Teenagers Whose Lives It Changed, which National Book Award winner Ibram X. Kendi hails as “powerful, timely, and delicately written.”
