Book Murder Mayhem Mystery in San Miguel

Download or read book Murder Mayhem Mystery in San Miguel written by Richard Crissman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This funny book takes a piercing look at the gringos living in the central highlands of Mexico. Maybe it is the altitude of 6,500 feet, or maybe it is a privilege of wealthy people, but Americans are pretty independent cusses when they settle in San Miguel de Allende. Jack and Penny Battle live in San Miguel, where he writes pretty poor detective novels and his beautiful wife pas the bills. They solve the murder of an old dear who writes pornography in the first story. Political activists make fools of themselves in the second story, and one of them is killed for political correctness and money. In the third story the Battles make a dangerous political force out of their gardener. Then a promoter of shady subdivisions defrauds the whole American colony, and is pulled up short by Penny Battle who pays no attention to Jack's advice to stay out of it. To know these people is to laugh, as much with them as at them. Pull up a tall drink and enjoy yourself.

Book excerpt: The Battles find murder on toast! Fresh from their run-ins with murder and mayhem in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, Jack and Penny Battle come to Rye, on the seacoast of New Hampshire, to learn about the real America. Blair's Crest is a decaying summer palace filled with dysfunctional family, and down the drive is a hearty baseball-playing young family with no job and fading prospects. The Battle's house forms the third side of a triangle of greed, madness and murder when Philip disappears on his way to make a fortune from a stock-picking computer formula. All these events don't add up to a wholesome view of the USA, and when Jack buys a used Rolls Royce his perceptions are even more askew. Or are the motives for murder only those of most crime: emotions roused to a breaking point?

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Room, a young French burlesque dancer living in San Francisco is ready to risk anything in order to solve her friend’s murder—but only if the killer doesn’t get her first. Summer of 1876: San Francisco is in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heat wave and a smallpox epidemic. Through the window of a railroad saloon, a young woman named Jenny Bonnet is shot dead. The survivor, her friend Blanche Beunon, is a French burlesque dancer. Over the next three days, she will risk everything to bring Jenny's murderer to justice—if he doesn't track her down first. The story Blanche struggles to piece together is one of free-love bohemians, desperate paupers, and arrogant millionaires; of jealous men, icy women, and damaged children. It's the secret life of Jenny herself, a notorious character who breaks the law every morning by getting dressed: a charmer as slippery as the frogs she hunts. In thrilling, cinematic style, Frog Music digs up a long-forgotten, never-solved crime. Full of songs that migrated across the world, Emma Donoghue's lyrical tale of love and bloodshed among lowlifes captures the pulse of a boomtown like no other. "Her greatest achievement yet . . . Emma Donoghue shows more than range with Frog Music—she shows genius." —Darin Strauss, author of Half a Life.

Book The Art of Political Murder

Download or read book The Art of Political Murder written by Francisco Goldman and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-09-16 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this New York Times Notable Book, the Pulitzer Prize–finalist undertakes his own investigation into the murder of a Guatemalan bishop. Named a Best Book of the Year by the Washington Post Book World, the Chicago Tribune, the Economist, and the San Francisco Chronicle Two days after releasing a groundbreaking church-sponsored report implicating the military in the murders and disappearances of some two hundred thousand Guatemalan civilians, Bishop Juan Gerardi was bludgeoned to death in his garage. Gerardi was the country’s leading human rights activist, but the Church quickly realized it could not rely on police investigators or the legal system to solve the crime. Instead, Church leaders formed their own investigative team: a group of secular young men who called themselves Los Intocables—the Untouchables. Author Francisco Goldman spoke to witnesses no other reporter was able to reach, observing firsthand some of the most crucial developments in this sensational case. Documenting the Latin American reality of mara youth gangs and organized crime, The Art of Political Murder tells the incredible true story of Los Intocables and their remarkable fight for justice. “Becoming by turns a little bit Columbo, Jason Bourne and Seymour Hersh, Goldman gives us the anatomy of a crime while opening a window to a misunderstood neighboring country that is flirting with anarchy.” —The New York Times Book Review
